One in eight people in Germany faces discrimination — study
About 13% of Germans said they had faced discrimination in their daily lives in the past year. These figures come from the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW), whose researchers surveyed about 30,000 people across Germany. The participants were asked whether they had experienced unequal treatment and why.
The most common reasons cited were background or racism — about 42% of those who complained of discrimination reported this. About a quarter of respondents associated discrimination with appearance, and almost as many associated it with gender or gender identity.
According to the study, Muslims are the most frequently discriminated against. Almost 29% of respondents reported experiencing discrimination, compared to around 10% of non-Muslims. The highest rate was recorded among Muslim women who wear the hijab: more than 38% of them reported being discriminated against in the past year.
