I just discovered this movie in my quest to see as many Robert Downey Jr. films as possible. One Night Stand is a hidden gem with strong performances from RDJ and Wesley Snipes. It has been compared to Fatal Attraction, and while it has a similar theme, it doesn't have quite the same impact as that 1987 thriller. This film is more subtle and introspective, less about the consequences of a mistake and more about life changing events. While Snipes is the star, the character of Charlie, played by Robert Downey Jr., is central to the story. Charlie is the common denominator that brings the characters together, and for me, his story, and RDJ's performance, were what moved me. I was reminded of Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington in Philadelphia, the 1993 film that won Hanks an Oscar. Like Hanks, RDJ plays a gay man dying of AIDS. Like Denzel, Snipes plays his straight African American friend. Of course, Philadelphia is largely about homophobia, which is only touched on in One Night Stand, and Hanks carries the film while RDJ plays a supporting role. However, I think RDJ's performance is every bit as good as Hanks; poignant but witty; powerful but understated. Wesley Snipes plays a man searching for fulfillment and wrestling with his conscience while trying to be strong for his dying friend. Ironically, it is RDJ's character who gives Snipes the advice he needs to change his life. I recommend seeing this film, if for no other reason than to experience another courageous performance by Robert Downey Jr., who never ceases to amaze me with his range and emotional depth as an actor.

I'm only giving this movie four stars for RDJ's performance. It felt like there were two movies going on at once and the story couldn't decide which one was more important. Honestly, the part of the movie dealing with the AIDS epidemic should have been the main focus because it could have critically explored masculinity, specifically black masculinity, but perhaps that would have been a head of its time. Robert Downey, Jr. was great in this movie, but that's no surprise, really. Right around this time was when he was struggling the most with his drug addiction and he still managed to give a heart-wrenching portrayal of someone suffering immensely, effectively out acting everyone else. I think this movie could have used a lot more edits. It's fine to watch for RDJ, but not really enough to warrant for the main plot (which I'm not entirely sure what it is).

This movie is definitely worth watching. Its about relationships and love. How we sometimes lose love and grow apart , and sometimes find love that we thought was gone, and come together again. The actors give subtle and powerful performances. The love between friends is beautifully portrayed by Wesley Snipes and Robert Downey Jr. I found watching Downey to be a bit heartbreaking. You can tell from the first scene with him, which is extraordinary, that he was almost at an end, physically wasted. But his performance is deeply moving. There is jealousy and regret, compassion, forgiveness, and love. Wesley Snipes' response to him is just as genuine. On a quiet evening, when you're in the mood for a beautiful, sad story, I recommend this one.

So nice to watch this film again today. I saw it in the theaters years ago and loved it. Wesley Snipes and Ming-Na are especially good in this one. But I always remembers Robert Downey's Jr.'s performance here. This man is simply a great actor. His face "says" so much; he conveys so much emotion thru his expressions and gestures. Just a great, great actor.
