No advantage to PPC / Large Lasers?
Ok, so in MW:Mercenaries those were pretty amazing. It took your opponent a while to get in range with their smaller weapons and you could take out a good chunk of their armor or even 1-2 mechs before they could close in. However, here it's basically not even a turn, because the sensor range is so small, that you are one jump / move away from unleashing your Medium Lasers. To compare the energy weapon options alone (at least in the beginning): - Medium Laser: 25 Damage, 10 Heat, 1t Weight - Large Laser: 40 Damage, 30 Heat, 5t Weight - PPC: 50 Damage, 25 SDamage, 40 Heat, 7t Weight I just capped a Black Knight and at first was like "Finally, i can mount some serious firepower with PPCs and LLasers!!!". However, unless running with no armor whatsoever, the options are: - 2x PPC: 100 Damage, 50 SDamage, 80 Heat. Can't mount enough heat sinks without taking out jump jets, and even then sustained fire is impossible. - 3x Large Laser: 120 Damage, 90 Heat. Pretty much the same story. - 8x Medium Laser: 200 Damage, 80 Heat. Plenty of room for Jump Jets, Heat Sinks, Full Armor and even Flamers. Am i missing something, or do the devs just straight up hate PPCs / Large Lasers, because reasons?

Yeah Cannons VS lasers trade off shuld be that you switch tonnage for heatsinks. Also AC2 got the the biggest buff of all, it does AC5 damage here and the AC5 almost do AC10 damage, add the stability damage to that wich the lasers lack I don't understand why they buffed the damage on AC's.
Considering I just salvaged a full Black Knight 5 minutes before reading through this thread, should I spec it for pure Med Lasers and a PPC?
There's two types damage: damage that accomplishes your tactical objective, and damage that does not. In mech combat, your tactical objective is to penetrate the enemy's armor. Once penetration is achieved it is far easier to cripple or destroy your enemy; the sooner you cripple or destroy the enemy, the less damage they can deal back and the harder the momentum of the engagement will swing in your favour. Small weapons have better weight-to-damage ratios than large ones, but they're very bad at penetration. 100 damage worth of Medium Laser is going to be spread out over the enemy's entire body; 100 damage worth of PPC is going to be concentrated in one or two areas. The PPCs will achieve armor penetration and get kills sooner; the Mediums will have to slowly whittle down their target's armor over multiple rounds, giving the target plenty of time to kill you. The real advantage to smaller weapons is crit-seeking; once big weapons have stripped armor away, small weapons (missiles in particular) can get into the gaps repeatedly and wreck internal systems. But acheiveing that penetration will take forever if you rely on high DPS, high spread weapons.

I have a couple shadow Hawk Hs and I've put 2 SRM6 and a large laser on each. With max armour and 5/5 mobiloty they are very useful. The laser for poping components will called shots, the SRMs for staggering and stripping armour, and then they can straight up punch the snot out of most things. The D has 2 small and medium lasers and only one SRM 6. As workhorse mechs they do fine. I don't run out of SRMs - unlike LRMs - and fine mid to close range works for me.
Get PPC + Llaser and other - mass MLasers. Or just if you Want Lazer Knight - Amass only MLasers (8) - other heaters and armor. Nothing else... so it could work in close distance... But in other way - Just take Cataphract or Dragon and mount AC20 to it... and having pilot with 2lvl Gunnery - Breach effect - You can 1h-kill most of light-med mechs - just aiming Torso So my lance: Jagger - LRM launcher - i get 55 Rockets in one salvo and close to trash armor + 1 just heater. And it could sown light mechs or 1,5 turrets/tanks easely pilot - Master Tactician (2 tactics, 1 gunnery) Dragon & Cataphract - two mechs with AC20 and little other stuff - the armor beares that take main hits, come close and just make 1-shoot-1dead or knoked down. Pilots (1 guts - makes grounded if stay at place, 2 gunnery - breaching + many aim = make multybreaching) Thunderbolt - combination of 1PPC + Llaser, 2 SRMs and MLasers... Pilot 1 Tactics +2 gunnery - just 2nd sencor locker - that help gigabombs to fly far away...-))) and it easely cut aboyt 8-10 mercs, if you use tactics and move smothly using terrain, vigilance and aiming -)) So - real fun, when they come and 1-shot die... often even without 1st fire-))

PPC is the only energy weapon that does stability damage. If you combine PPC shots with LRMs you can knock down mechs with a single alpha or 2. Large Lasers do not do stability damage and medium lasers and small lasers do notdo stability damage.
