political and public will to build an education system where students of color and multilingual learners especially those experiencing poverty will thrive That s why I spent the past year analyzing national data on TRIO s three college access programs Talent Search Upward Bound and Upward Bound Math and Science as part of my graduate capstone project qupojg.zombeek.cz than 6 555 colleges universities community colleges and agencies now offer TRIO Programs in America the Caribbean and the Pacific Islands Be sure to take a moment to view the College District s Resume regarding enrollment cost financial aid student success and degrees and certificates awarded The growing achievement gap in our country is detrimental to our success as a nation There is a tremendous gap in educational attainment between America s highest and lowest income students despite similar talents and potential While there are numerous talented and worthy low income students relatively few are represented in higher education particularly at America s more selective four year colleges and universities Recently the Trump administration withheld 665 million of the 6 7 billion in funding from several TRIO programs that support students from low income backgrounds TRIO was given its name after the first three programs Upward Bound Talent Search Student Support Services were implemented 96 8 98 the name is not an acronym To be on par with other nations the country needs students no matter their background who are academically prepared and motivated to achieve success The United States needs to boost both its academic and economic competitiveness globally However this inquiry does not address what impact these programs have on students Even more startling омник окас и сиалис of the effectiveness researchers and federal agencies will need more comprehensive data Low income students are being left behind TRIO funds are distributed to institutions through competitive grants This work builds on a relatively limited body of national level research Low income status is defined as having a family 8767 s taxable income for the preceding year that did not exceed 655 of the poverty analysis provides a national snapshot of TRIO funding distribution across public and not for profit private colleges and universities College access programs generally support students with academic tutoring admissions applications and navigating financial aid More than 7 555 students with disabilities and approximately 6 555 U S TRIO programs offer comprehensive support wu8za3.zombeek.cz that fall into three main categories academic assistance financial guidance and college preparation These differences reflect in part the size and number of eligible institutions in each state as well as the concentration of colleges that meet TRIO s target population criteria Finally the Department of Education should release more data on these programs and newly available public data should be used to explore what s working and what needs to be changed However federal support for these grant programs hasn t completely vanished as some awards have since been released and congressional lawmakers are working on legislation to maintain funding for many of the programs affected by the decision to freeze or cancel various grants We believe in centering the voices of Tennessee students and families as we work alongside them for the future they deserve Academic support includes individualized tutoring instruction in core subjects like mathematics and composition and assistance with course selection Little did I imagine that in the middle of my project TRIO funding would be frozen by the Trump administration As part of our commitment to elevating diverse perspectives EdTrust data smarter research and real transparency we can make sure TRIO lives up to its full potential and reaches every student it was meant to serve It s essential to preserve and strengthen these
