The youngster found herself talking to an 'older male with a beard' who 'asked if her parents were strict'
Never miss a story and read the latest headlines with our free email updates
A warning has been posted online after a Derby girl was found by her parents chatting to a man on the internet chat site Omegle, which advertises itself as a place where people can "talk to strangers!"
The couple posted on Spotted Chellaston's Facebook page that they had found their daughter chatting to the man.
Their post says: "Parents please be vigilant with your kids' internet usage. Tonight we found out our daughter had been logging into a site called omegle.com - tagline 'talk to strangers' - we had no idea she was doing this despite keeping a check on her phone. We didn't know about this site.
"A male chatted to her. Claimed to be a photographer. Asked about her siblings. Asked if her parents were strict. Thankfully, she felt uneasy and asked him to unblank his cam. It was an older male with a beard.
"This is a site which guarantees anonymity so the individual is not traceable. We have real concerns and will be approaching the school and police. Needless to say, our daughter is now restricted on internet usage.
"We thought we had a handle on keeping her safe - it would appear not. Please check for this website and keep your kids safe."
At the bottom of Omegle's homepage there is a statement advising people on how to use the site safely. It says the site should not be used by children under the age of 13 and those under 18 should only use it with the permission of a parent or guardian.
This comes on the day the world marks Safer Internet Day. Its aim is to give people a chance to get advice and join in the social media campaign to promote better internet usage.
New research launched to mark Safer Internet Day reveals that images and video play is a central role in young people's digital lives. The majority (84%) of 8-17-year-olds have shared a photo online and, in the hour before they took part in the study, one in eight had shared a selfie, almost one out of three had used YouTube and one in four had used Snapchat.
Will Gardner, a director of the UK Safer Internet Centre and Chief Executive Officer of Childnet, said: "It is fair to say that, in 2017, the internet is powered by images and videos. This can magnify the risks and pressures that young people face, while also offering fun new opportunities for self-expression and creativity.
"The survey's findings remind us that, with an ever-changing landscape, it is more important than ever to equip young people with the skills, knowledge, confidence and resilience to communicate using images and videos responsibly and positively."
1. Be sensible - Always tell a trusted adult if you are ever worried or upset by something that happens online. They are always there for you to ask for help if you are unsure about anything you see online.
2. Be careful - Keep your personal information safe and check with an adult before you share anything online. Personal information includes your email address, phone number and password.
3. Be aware - Make sure you know the rules about how to behave and stay safe on the sites, games and apps you use. Look out for buttons that let you block, mute and report other users who aren't behaving.
4. Be safe - Never agree to meet up offline with someone you only know online. No matter how friendly they might seem or how well you think you know them, they are still a stranger. Always tell a trusted adult if someone online asks to meet up.
1. Be kind - Use images and videos to make a positive impact and think carefully about the impact on others before you share something online.
2. Be you - Think before you post. What do your images and videos say about you? Are you happy with the story you are telling? What you share online could be there forever, can be misinterpreted and could also reveal personal information about you.
3. Be a digital citizen - Report anything you see online, including images and videos, which are offensive, upsetting or inappropriate. Speak to a trusted adult if something worries you.
4. Be a critical thinker - Seeing is not believing … when you see something online, take a moment to see the full picture. Not everything or everyone online can be trusted.
5. Be safe - Never agree to meet up offline with someone you only know online. No matter how friendly they might seem or how well you think you know them, they are still a stranger. Always tell a trusted adult if someone online asks to meet up.
1. Be engaged - Talk regularly with your children about how they use technology and find out what their digital life is like, including how they communicate using images and videos.
2. Be aware - Explore the online features of the devices you already own in your family and the devices you might buy for your child in the future. Knowing how to activate and use parental controls can help protect your child from seeing inappropriate content online.
3. Be there - The most important thing is to ensure that you are there if something goes wrong. Your child might be very embarrassed to discuss the issue they are facing so reassure them that they can turn to you no matter what.
4. Be thoughtful - The internet provides a platform for billions of people to share their views and opinions but not everything or everyone online is trustworthy. Encourage your children to think critically about the things they see online, including the images and videos they view on social media. Discussing what they have seen and the message behind a photo or a video can help them consider the difference between fact and opinion, and that there is sometimes more than meets the eye.
