A chat site that encourages kids to “talk to strangers” is a dangerous destination that played a part in an 11-year-old girl being forced to become a predator’s digital sex slave, a multi-million dollar lawsuit claims.
Omegle, which randomly pairs up users for video and text chats, bills itself as a “great way to meet new friends” but has become a haven for pedophiles and voyeurs who use the site to watch people pleasure themselves, the federal suit filed Friday in Oregon claims.
The site, which has 66 million monthly users from across the globe, says kids 13 and older can use the platform with parental supervision and permission — but doesn’t have any system in place to ensure that users are being supervised, according to the $22 million suit.
The site also doesn’t require users to verify their age or name before using the product and doesn’t have any mechanism in place to prevent kids from being randomly matched with adults and vice versa, the lawsuit says.
In 2014, an 11-year-old girl only identified as “A.M.” logged on to Omegle after using it with friends during sleepover parties in hopes of meeting other middle schoolers like her.
Instead, she was connected to Ryan Scott Fordyce, a now-convicted Canadian pedophile who was in his late 30s at the time and is now facing 10 years behind bars.
Fordyce immediately started grooming the child and coerced her into giving him her contact information so they could keep in touch off the platform that allows users to be anonymous.
There, he asked her to send him nude images of herself and told her he could make her “feel better” and she needed to trust him because it was “integral to her ‘healing,’” even if his requests made her uncomfortable, according to the suit.
At first, Fordyce wanted to see images of the child’s “smile” but he soon started asking for snaps of her body and then started demanding specific “poses, props, positions and hairstyles,” the suit states.
The pedophile set deadlines for his twisted “assignments”, threatened to kidnap A.M. or harm her family and required her to be “at his beck and call” “at all hours of the day and night.”
While the interactions Fordyce and A.M. had didn’t happen on Omegle’s site, the platform continued to be a central part of their relationship because he forced her to use the website to recruit other children for him, the court papers claim.
The young girl was told she could stop sending Fordyce images at any time she wanted, but if she did, he threatened to leak the photos to her family and friends and told her she’d get in trouble with her parents, school and the police.
For three years, Fordyce held this threat over A.M.’s head. It wasn’t until January 2018, when members of a Canadian police force contacted her parents to tell them the pervert had been arrested for child pornography and images of their daughter had been found in his stash.
A.M. and her attorneys said Omegle is responsible for the abuse the child suffered because it’s where she met Fordyce and if they had employed mechanisms to prevent kids from matching with adults or other safety features, she never would’ve been abused by him.
“There’s no reason for a video streaming product that randomly pairs adults and children to exist at all, let alone without any real safety controls,” A.M., who is now 19, told The Post in a statement through her attorneys.
“This lawsuit is bigger than me, the damage has already been done to me, but my team and I are determined to protect the children after me that are just as vulnerable as I was. Nobody deserves this,” she said.
The suit claims Omegle is aware that predators are all over their website, but that it puts the onus on users to protect themselves.
“Predators have been known to use Omegle, so please be careful,” the website’s homepage stated through May 2021 before the line was taken down, right around the time A.M.’s attorneys sent a preservation letter to the company.
While that line has since been removed from the website, the suit states Omegle still “flouts the dangers of its product” on its homepage by acknowledging that users “may not behave appropriately” and their moderation “is not perfect.”
Omegle didn’t return a request for comment.
Lawyers Carrie Goldberg and Barb Long told The Post they were proud of their client for “channeling her pain to make the world safer for others.”
“Omegle’s popular use is for online sex and it welcomes underage users. The horror our client faced starting at age 11 when Omegle matched her with a child predator was a natural consequence of the inherent and foreseeable dangers of its product,” the attorneys said in a joint statement.
“May this be a bright burning warning to all tech companies that if you hurt children, we will hunt you down, and make you answer to your victims in court.”

Warning: this story contains disturbing adult themes.
Michael was 14 when he first went on to the video chat site Omegle.
He'd heard about it at school and was intrigued by its notorious reputation for unpredictable and weird encounters.
Within a few hours of being paired at random with strangers, he says he was linked up with an older woman who persuaded him to show her his penis.
"I'm not sure if she was an adult or not, but she was definitely older than me," he says.
"I can remember her asking if I wanted to see her naked. She invited me to jerk off to her. I did it because I was stupid. If I could go back, then I would stop myself."
Michael logged off shortly afterwards and continued to worry about the incident.
Global child protection charities and police forces from multiple countries have become increasingly concerned about Omegle which has surged in popularity during the pandemic.
Michael says he was drawn back to the site a few years ago as an 18-year-old and became addicted.
"I started going on the site again and started doing 'stuff' on camera with different people. Video sex."
What Michael didn't realise was that at least one of these intimate video calls had been recorded.
It was during a moment of lockdown boredom that he discovered the video was being used to trick others into sexual activity.
"I'd quit the site for over a year but one afternoon I randomly got paired with a video of myself on the website doing 18+ stuff. Someone had recorded me masturbating and had been using it for at least a year."
Michael says he was horrified to see the old video of himself going through the process of undressing then masturbating, all while the mystery person or computer program pretending to be him typed things to encourage Michael to join in.
To make chats more anonymous, many people on Omegle choose to obscure their faces on video and talk through the text chat.
Michael (who did not want to share his real name) says the interaction was convincing.
"It was like a fully advanced system with different video sequences of me doing different stuff."
The 21-year-old from Scandinavia says he is sharing his story because he wants people to learn from his experience and question who is on the other side of the video call.
"I am constantly stressed about it, but I find peace that at least my face is not in it. But it pains me I am used that way to hurt other people. In fact, I believe this is the way I was groomed into the site as a 14-year-old, although I can't confirm the other person was fake at that time."
Omegle says it is "deeply disturbed" by Michael's story, and is "enhancing moderation practices to eliminate" this behaviour as much as possible.
Michael got in touch with the BBC after our previous report highlighted what appeared to be incidents of children exposing themselves on Omegle.
He did not show the BBC the video, but our investigations into Omegle have found similar sex-baiting bots being used on the website.
Omegle is based in the US and operates in dozens of languages.
It was launched in 2009, but has exploded in popularity during the pandemic with about two million visits a day.
It has become increasingly popular with young people thanks to viral videos about it on social media apps like TikTok and YouTube.
There is a warning on the site that "predators" use it, and it is not for under-18s, but there is no age verification system in place.
There is also no way to report incidents or contact the company at all online or by mail.
Sarah Smith, from the internet safety charity The Internet Watch Foundation (IWF), said these types of software tricks were sometimes called "virtual cam whores".
"I can't imagine how distressing it must be to find someone using a video of yourself in this way, but these virtual cam bots are something we do see being used to trick and coerce children into sexual activity," she said.
"We've seen instances where children are actually being shown videos of other children, where we know that it can't have been happening in real time because we've seen that video before elsewhere."
A BBC investigation has found what appears to be children exposing themselves to strangers on the website
The IWF says it would like to see better moderation on live chat sites and robust age verification to protect children and all users from this sort of behaviour.
"We used to say 'seeing is believing', but unfortunately the exact opposite is true with this fake live camera software."
Andy Patel, from cyber-security company F-Secure, says there is an active community of Omegle bot-makers who share tricks and techniques on YouTube videos and other forums.
"Most sex-baiting bots on Omegle seem to be very crude scripts designed to interact with as many people as possible. I think in Michael's case though, it's likely that there is a human 'operator' behind the scenes who is clicking through the sequence of actions on Omegle to make it more believable."
Omegle has been criticised by its users and others, including the IWF, of not doing enough to moderate the site, or stop children from accessing it.
The UN Human Rights Office's expert investigator on the sale and sexual exploitation of children contacted the BBC following the publication of our previous story.
The BBC understands that the office has made contact with Omegle, but the case is in a confidential stage in proceedings.
Leif K Brooks is the creator and still runs the website.
He says Omegle moderation is carried out by a fully-automated AI service as well as a third-party monitoring firm that has a team monitoring the site 24/7.
"The inappropriate behaviour that has occurred, while a very small percentage of the millions of daily interactions, is deeply disturbing to me and unacceptable," he said.
"Omegle is fully committed to addressing the concerns raised so that a small minority of bad actors don't ruin the positive interactions experienced by millions of users."

Hello, there, all my Omegleheads. To state the obvious, you opened this webpage because you are looking for the best sites like Omegle. I commend you.
You are familiar with how Omegle.com works like the back of your head, but you are tired of conversing with the same people. You have a desire to explore the new.
You visited the homepage. Instantly, you noticed 56,000+ people online right now, but you also know this claim is a crock. If that number is accurate, how is it possible to continually open cams to the same meat-pleasers, treacherous trolls, and tumultuous legal teens grouped up inside a messy bedroom?
Here, brewing under the webcam chat utility hole is a list of video chat alternatives similar to Omegle in terms of the user interface, populous, and overall user experience. You will get nothing better than this!
Have no fear, because Mr. Informer is here. I will discuss the most popular Omegle alternatives that either make the site look puny or recognizably identical like twins. Let me stop with the colorful words and colloquialisms and start with the list of websites like Omegle.
Ever since Tosh.O featured Omegle on his program, the site ranked #1 for random chat video sites. You could not talk about webcam chatting unless mentioning this new software program that attracted everyone, from teens to celebrities. However, Jerkmate is the ultimate chess master and pulled a move that quickly snatched the crown from Omegle and ranking 10/10 for the exclusive cam-to-cam adult content. Many meat-pleasers would hop on Omegle, whip out their birthday surprises, and get banned. However, Jerkmate allows nudity between users and live cam models, and that is why the site is the winner.
If you ever used Omegle, then you should know that nudity is generally a no-no, but people whip their ding-a-lings anyway. Some of them will bunny hop their asses on there to see naked bodies or expose their privates like they are at an art show in Greece.
Jerkmate is an adult version of Omegle where you can pay real cam models to stare at your meatless MorningStar polish sausage with a smile on their faces.
Jerkmate.com is for users 18+, obviously, so you can perform all the nasty stuff you want without getting cam-banned.
What that means is no more persuading chicks to get nude and pressing ‘Next’ forever until you land on a cam, hoping it’s a ‘real’ girl willing to study your albino python.
More importantly, your cam will never connect to underage girls because all users on Jerk mate are either fully grown or men who do not play immature games.
If you are over 18, the best course of action is to log off Omegle and logon to a real adult cam site with live xxx honies who will hop on your carrot like bunny rabbits - Welcum to Jerkmate!
Chatroulette is the closest prototype you will get to Omegle. This free video-to-video online chatting portal with no strings attached sounds very familiar to the common ear.
Every feature on CR is almost the same as Omegle. For example, no sign up is required. Connections are instant without getting kicked. And you can remain completely anonymous by selecting ‘Text only’.
Since Chatroulette is a 100% copycat of Omegle, or maybe it’s the other way around, all the features are the same. However, verifying phone numbers before continuing to spool through groups of strangers ready to chat is different on Chatroulette than Omegle. Moreover, you are forced to allow access to your camera and microphone when you first enter the site - putting you dead smack in the middle of the action. Can you say ‘Big Brother’? Omegle only requires instant video broadcasting if you go to the Unmoderated Section and press ‘Video’.
If you are an extrovert who loves to talk with people from around the world, then you’re in luck. Although you can do this on Omegle, what you cannot see is their locations. However, on Chatroulette, you can see details about their location (name of country or state if they are in the USA).
For example, I talked to a ‘homey’ from Papua, and some young lads from Russia who wanted me to ship them a pack of BubbleYum (Apparently, they like American snacks?).
Unfortunately, Chatroulette has flushed down the drain over the years. Most cam videos are endless streams of weiner jackers with no filter.
Bro, TinyChat is so different from Omegle because you can see multiple cams of strangers. The system does not connect only one-on-one cams unless you give one of your closest friends a specific link to the room, and even then, strangers pop out of nowhere, interrupting your conversations.
Unlike Omegle, TinyChat gives you the power to ban users from the room and choose how long you want to keep them on the list. However, if you try to broadcast your cam in another room, you might get banned by some random mod for the craziest reason: maybe your mic’s volume was too loud, or perhaps you said ‘hello’ to a girl they liked - yes, that stuff happens there often.
However, Tinychat is more fun than Omegle, but very restrictive. For instance, if you’re new to the site, you can broadcast your cam for about 5 minutes until you are prompted to sign up for an account.
CamFrog is a lot different from Omegle in many ways. First, it requires downloading an external exe client to start the program. Many people might be confused about how this is done or generally distrust random programs wanting full access to their computers.
CamFrog is more similar to Tinychat than Omegle, except you have to click on a username to see the person behind the cam. If you click on the most popular cams, there might be only one person you can see, but you can hear other voices talking. So, you will need to click on all usernames to see them.
On the positive side, CamFrog has better visuals than Omegle and Tinychat. It feels good looking at the site.
You could look at Omegle like an early 2000’s Bentley Continental. It’s old, but it’s still luxurious and a classic in some respects. However, CamFrog is like a late-model Hyundai. All the tech is upgraded and new, but do you want to invest in this ve
