More than 11,000 athletes from around the world will gather at the Tokyo Olympics this weekend to compete for the highest honour in their respective sports. These athletes will spend over two weeks in close proximity at the Olympic Village, that exclusive club of the most chiselled bodies, running high on endorphins, and carrying no strings.
Sex in the Olympics Village has been an enduring story for a little over three decades now. The idea that these women and men at the peak of their physical endurance would practice celibacy was debunked in ’88 when condoms were distributed at the Seoul Games to prevent the spread of HIV-AIDS. Since then, distribution of condoms has been something of a tradition at every Olympics. Even so, it remained a largely unreported phenomenon until an ESPN exposé blew the cover on the debauchery in the Olympic Village. The report interviewed athletes, both retired and competing at the time, who revealed stories of parties, orgies, and hook-ups even among athletes whose “face is a 7, (but) their body is a 20.”
Had it not been for COVID-19, Tokyo 2020 would’ve been no different. At a time when the world is living through a once-in-a-century pandemic, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has imposed strict rules regarding physical contact among everyone that’s part of the bubble. While they have distributed some 160,000 condoms among the athletes, officials claim that they’re meant as souvenirs for participants to take back to their home countries and raise awareness of HIV and AIDS and have urged them to practice abstinence for the duration of the games.
Officially, South Korea began the tradition of handing out condoms to participants during the 1988 Olympics. If condoms were distributed earlier, it wasn’t done officially. The distribution of 8,500-odd condoms was also significant since this was the decade when HIV AIDS cases had reached alarming numbers.
However, officials soon discovered hundreds of condoms littering the roofs of the athletes’ quarters in the Olympic Village, which then resulted in the official ban on outdoor sex. Not that it prevented people from going at it in the shrubs, lawns, and terraces: who’s going to stop an Olympics boxer, right?
By the turn of the century, sex in the Olympic Village had become an open secret and officials began to take this seriously. Knowing better than to preach abstinence, the Australians decided to order in 70,000 condoms to distribute among athletes, trainers, and officials. They soon became acutely aware of just how much they underestimated that figure. Just one week later, they sent for another 20,000.
The conservative Salt Lake City in Utah, USA, wouldn’t have athletes going at it right under their noses. So, as the 2002 Winter Olympics went underway the Red State witnessed protests when some 100,000 condoms were distributed for free in the Olympic Village.
By 2008 Beijing, the reputation of the Olympic Games as a massive sex party with the hottest people on the planet had begun to spread. Michael Phelps memorably got it on with Australian swimmer Stephanie Rice whom he dated eventually. Even midlist Hollywood celebrities who were in Beijing for the games managed to get some action. All of this set the tone for 2012 London Olympics which were dubbed as the raunchiest yet.
Grindr, which was a website before it became an app, launched in 2009 and had some 350,000 of its users in London alone. As soon as athletes began arriving in the British capital before the games, the site (and the fledgling app) crashed and took more than 24 hours to get back up and running.
The Winter Games in Russia were marred by reports of terrible accommodation and sporting facilities but if there was one winner in all of this, it was a new dating app called Tinder. Launched just a couple of years prior, the app was yet to make a dent in markets like Russia. The Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics took care of that as Tinder reported a 400 per cent rise in users for the duration of the games.
The last Olympic games may seem like an event in the distant past but they were also the most action-packed. Officials distributed 450,000 condoms during the games, up three times from the 150,000 prophylactics that were given away in London and went a step further by throwing in another 175,000 sachets of lubricant for good measure.
By all estimates, the 2020 Tokyo Olympics won’t see half as much action as some of the other games, if at all. The story of cardboard beds designed to prevent athletes from indulging in extracurricular activities may have been debunked by now but the fear of the virus remains. Then again, there’s no accounting for what a bit of adrenaline and endorphins can do, is there?
