Chet Curtis, for decades half of a high-wattage husband-and-wife news anchor team in Boston whose personal and professional breakup caused wide distress in the city, died there on Wednesday. He was 74.
New England Cable News, for which Mr. Curtis had worked most recently, announced the death on its website . Bob Keating, the assistant news editor at NECN, said the cause was pancreatic cancer, The Associated Press reported.
For 18 years, Mr. Curtis and his wife, Natalie Jacobson, delivered the news twice nightly on WCVB-TV , Channel 5, an ABC affiliate. During those years, until their professional split in 2000 (their personal split had come the year before), they were the de facto first couple of Boston, very likely the city’s best-known conveyors of news since Paul Revere.
One of the very few married anchor teams in the country, and by all accounts the only one in a major market at the time, the couple were embraced by their city as cherished neighbors. Known in familiar tandem as “Chet and Nat,” they were recognized everywhere and profiled in the local and national news media.
Bostonians were long conscious of their every move: their marriage in 1975 — it was the second marriage for both — at the city’s Old North Church ; Ms. Jacobson’s struggle to become pregnant; and, in 1981, the birth of their daughter, which led WCVB’s newscast that night.
Their popularity made WCVB the ratings leader among Boston’s nightly newscasts for many years.
Though the couple spoke in interviews of trying to keep their personal and professional lives separate, viewers warmed to them precisely because their on-air demeanor had the homey familiarity of the long-married.
“When he talks about sports, she rolls her eyes,” The Los Angeles Times wrote in 1999. “When she talks about family issues, he tries hard to look fascinated.”
But that year, the couple announced their separation after nearly a quarter-century of marriage, taking Boston by surprise. What might have occasioned the breakup — something they never discussed publicly — was the subject of wide speculation in the press and around the water cooler.
Mr. Curtis and Ms. Jacobson continued as co-anchors until 2000, when they were given separate newscasts at the station.
The couple divorced in 2001, and that year Mr. Curtis moved to NECN, where he was a news anchor and the host of a public-affairs program.
Chester Kukiewicz was born in Amsterdam, N.Y., in 1939 and began reading the news on a local radio station when he was a teenager. After earning a bachelor’s degree from Ithaca College, he was a reporter for WTOP-TV in Washington and WCBS-TV in New York before moving to Boston in 1968.
Mr. Curtis — he adopted the surname early in his career — joined WCVB at its inception in 1972 and went on to win several regional Emmy Awards.
The station first paired him with Ms. Jacobson on its noon newscast that year. They remained co-anchors until 1978; in 1982 they were reunited on the evening news.
Mr. Curtis’s first marriage, to Helen Wagner, ended in divorce. His survivors include two daughters from that marriage, Dana Curtis Keep and Dawn Curtis Hanley; a daughter, Lindsay Curtis Wynalek, from his marriage to Ms. Jacobson; his companion, Kerry Kristine; and four grandchildren.
Throughout their marriage, Mr. Curtis and Ms. Jacobson were interviewed often about balancing work and romance. They made it clear that they wanted to be thought of as newscasters first and foremost.
Asked by The Boston Herald how they planned to celebrate Valentine’s Day 1998, Mr. Curtis replied, “It’s not a big celebration for us,” adding, “Usually it’s a workday during a ratings period.”
