There is a wonderful urban legend that says Egyptian queen Cleopatra ordered her servants to fill a carved out gourd with bees to stimulate her genitals, with the rhythmic buzzing inside the base turning the hollow gourd into a makeshift vibrator.
I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess that this legend is probably fake, but it does shed light on a truth we all know: That women have always desired sexual pleasure and sought means to satisfy themselves with a little help from some creative tools.
Flash forward to today, when the vibrator is the crux of every woman's sex toy collection; it is her trusty go-to tool. Yet what do we really know about vibrators? How did these things come about, if not for Cleopatra and her insect-gourd? Here, we trace the history of the vibrator, dating all the way back to prehistoric times.
To start, we've got to go back to the early, battery- and electricity-less sex toys. And that goes way, way back in time, long before Cleopatra. In fact, the first phallic sex toys, like this carved phallus made out of chalk , date back nearly 28,000 years B.C. to the Neolithic Era. They were made of siltstone, and many were found in German caves.
The first vibrator is credited to physician George Taylor in 1869 . The vibrator's original purpose was to relieve symptoms of depression and anxiety in women, known as hysteria (derived from the Greek word for "uterus," the mysterious lady part men obviously think makes us crazy).
Documentation of hysteria dates back to the 13th century , but it was Sigmund Freud who relegated the disease strictly to women. Before the vibrator came into play in the 19th century, doctors would simply finger women on their operating tables (called a "pelvic massage") and send them on their way.
Jennifer Wright, historian and author of It Ended Badly: The Thirteen Worst Breakups in History , tells ELLE.com that vibrators were really invented for the convenience of the doctors treating hysteria. It was exhausting to rub one out manually, so they invented a machine that took care of the problem.
Doctors believed they were treating a female illness, and had no idea that what they were really facing was sexual frustration. "The most hilarious fact is that vibrators were developed because physicians got tired of giving hand jobs. And they still did not realize that MAYBE women were getting sexual pleasure out of this," says Wright.
Pictured here is the Arnold, which was also marketed as a facial massager to help women preserve their youth.
The vibrator was first introduced into the home as household appliance, a form of "massager" for bodily ailments and "beauty aids" . The vibrator was only the fifth household appliance to be electrified , powered by a large, unsexy motor.
In the 1920s, vibrators began appearing in smut films and pornographic magazines , so the jig was up for women who were casually buying "back massagers." Flashback to the scene in Sex and the City where Samantha hits up a Sharper Image to return her vibrator, and the middle aged salesman keeps insisting it's a "neck massager."
We all know those bulbous, powerful wands are not made for massaging anything other than a clitoris. Get real.
According to Babeland's Museum of Vintage Vibrators , the period between the first machine vibes of the tail end of the Victorian Age to the 1930s was really the golden age of vibrator history. During this time, lots of innovative models came on the market, like this Massage Master II. It has three different heads to really "work out those sore muscles." Yep.
The 1940s saw the same clunky designs of the vibes that hit the market in the 1920s and 1930s. Marketed as "massagers," because they were loud, rather scary, and looked not unlike a screwdriver. (Not exactly something you'd be dying to put on your genitals.)
Pictured here you see a Model Av, in its original box.
While vibrators saw very few upgrades during this period, the 1952 Niagara Handheld Unit 1 was an interesting advent on models that already existed. Unlike the one-speed-fits-all devices on the market, the Niagara had a button for speed control, as opposed to a simple on/off switch.
While still decidedly retro, this was the first move towards making better products.
You might recognize the vibrator above as a very old, first rendition of your favorite wand massager of today: its vintage cousin, if you will.
With the dawn of the sexual revolution in the 1960s, the vibrator's popularity had a rebirth and demand among women soared, Wright tells us.
As women began taking control of their bodies, so too did they begin searching for better toys. The sexual revolution did not see an advent in design, but an amplification in demand. It was the first time women's pleasure was acknowledged by society.
The 1970s was the decade in which there were both serious improvements on the market models like the Niagara Units of the 1950s. There was also the invention of what is considered by many to be the Cadillac of vibrators: the Hitachi Magic Wand (still sold and used today).
As women started to create their own sex toy companies, they wanted to make products that were appealing to them, rather than the scary seven-pound, male-designed, insanely loud vibrating sticks of yesteryear.
One of the things they really wanted? A vibrator that was designed to focus on clitoral stimulation first and foremost, the Fukuoku , one of the very first finger vibes, aimed at clitoral stimulation.
In the 21st century, sex toys for women started to get a decidedly stylish upgrade. Suddenly there were toys that not only aimed to please different parts of the female anatomy, but also tried to appeal to all different aesthetics, like these super sleek Crave Vesper vibrators. It is the sex-tech revolution, one that brings together sexuality and pleasure with modern technology and minimalist design .
Even more inspiring is that sex toys are now being created by women. Women making vibrators for their own pleasure is a logical step; Alexandra Fine, co-founder of Dame products (who sells the Fin vibrator, pictured here), tells ELLE, "women's pleasure is really something about which women know best." Their Fin is a hand-wearable, USB chargeable, ultra-quiet vibrator with three different speeds. What more could you want? It's just one of many offerings on the market now proving that vibes can now be luxury items, ones we (hopefully) can use with both regularity and openness.
7 Powerful, Easy-to-Use Vibrators for Older Women
Self-pleasure doesn't have an age limit!
The need to pleasure yourself doesn't stop once you reach a certain age , though many people believe otherwise.
Well into your prime and beyond, masturbation is still something you'll get the urge to do. While there's no better toy than your hand, a vibrator can always amplify that orgasmic sensation.
Unfortunately, many vibrators weren't created with older women in mind (which is why we're patiently waiting for the Grace and Frankie vibrator to be a real thing). That being said, there are plenty on the market that better stimulate women over the age of 50.

This is one of the best vibrators for direct clitoral stimulation, especially because it has a variety of intensities, which works for women who need a little bit more than they used to in order to get off. The longer handle is also a helpful function that allows it to stay in position.
For those of you with limited mobility, this is one of the most accessible vibrators you'll come across. Because it uses a remote control, it makes it that much easier to use than a vibrator with various buttons you need to fidget with.
A vibrator with a firm grip is essential when you get older, which is why this one is perfect with its indented handle. You can even purchase various head attachments to personalize your experience.
Small yet mighty, this little toy can expertly stimulate any area of your lady parts, leaving you satisfied every single time. With a raised button at the end of the base, the control is easy to use alone or with a partner.
Rechargeable and lightweight, this vibrator has so many things going for it—especially if you're an older woman. It won't add any extra stress to your wrists and hands, making it a top-notch choice in our book.
The Yuki vibrator from Iroha doesn't look at all like a typical vibrator, which makes it far less intimidating for those who haven't had a ton of experience with the sex toy. This one fits right in the palm of your hand and allows for a sturdy grip.
Another vibe that doesn't look like what it is, the Minna Limon vibrator has a nifty little feature that allows you to record your preferred settings. Once you find what works for you, be sure to track it so you don't have to remember ever again.
