A 12-year-old Alabama boy has confessed to accidentally shooting and killing his mother last week, according to authorities.

The child, who has not been identified, admitted to shooting and killing his 29-year-old mom Ayobiyi Cook at a home on Freemont Avenue in Forestdale, according to a news release published Monday by the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office.

Detectives said they believe the victim's son "unintentionally discharged" the gun, leading to his mother's death.

The boy initially "fabricated a story" about the shooting, but "eventually gave a true account" of what happened, the JSCO said.

"This offense is a tragedy for the Cook family and the entire community," the department said on Monday.

Officials were originally told "a man was seen fleeing from the residence shortly before the 911 call was made," the department said in its initial release , published Saturday.

However, the JSCO said "there appeared to be no forced entry into the home."

Detectives eventually determined the original story given by the boy "was not possible," and the child ultimately admitted to pulling the trigger, according to Monday's release.

Evidence at the scene of the shooting suggests the gunfire was "unintentional," the JSCO said.

The shooting will be addressed via Alabama's Family Court system, per the department.

The family of the unidentified mother and son "has been cooperative throughout the process," and the child who fired the gun "will remain with" the family at this time, officials said.

Cook was the wife of a Birmingham police officer, according to AL.com . Her husband was reportedly at work when his wife died in the overnight shooting.

A funeral for Cook will be held Friday at noon at the New Bethlehem Baptist Church in Bessemer, according to her obituary on the Faith Memorial Chapel Funeral Services website.

Visitation will be held Thursday afternoon at Faith Memorial's Bessemer Chapel.

Detectives are seeking the public's help to locate a 16-year-old girl who has disappeared in northern California.
Kiely Rodni was last seen around 12:30 a.m. Saturday near the Prosser Family Campground in the town of Truckee, according to the Placer County Sheriff's Office.
Rodni attended a large party that night, alongside more than 100 young adults, detectives said Sunday. Her phone has been out of signal since she went missing.
The teenager was last seen wearing Dickies pants, a black tank top and has numerous piercings, including a nose ring. She stands 5 feet, 7 inches tall, weighs 115 pounds and has blonde hair and hazel eyes.
According to authorities, Rodni's vehicle -- a silver 2013 Honda CRV with a California license plate No. 8YUR127 -- has also been reported missing.
The teen's mother, Lindsey Rodni-Nieman, issued a desperate plea for the public's help Sunday evening, saying that her family "just wants her home."
"We're so scared and we miss her so much, and we love her so much," Rodni-Nieman said in the video message. "If anybody else out there, if you know where she is, if you know anything about where she might be... please come forward and share them."
An anonymous tip line has been set up to assist with the search. Anyone with information regarding Rodni's whereabouts is urged to contact authorities at 530-581-6320, and press option 7.

A New Jersey mom helped her boyfriend cover up the killing of her 2-year-old daughter three years ago and spun multiple lies to explain the toddler’s disappearance while continuing to collect child support from the girl’s father, according to authorities.
Monique Durham, 27, of Edison, and Matthew Chiles, 29, of Perth Amboy, were charged last week after a five-month investigation determined that her missing daughter had been beaten to death by Chiles on June 8, 2019, in Perth Amboy, according to court documents filed in support of the charges.
Durham watched Chiles leave with the girl’s body that night, and then fabricated a story about her daughter being adopted, authorities said.
The disappearance and killing only came to light earlier this year after the Child Protection and Permanency office in the state Department of Children and Families received an anonymous tip in February alleging Durham’s other daughter, then 5, was being abused by Chiles and whereabouts of the girl’s twin sister were unknown, authorities said.
During a Feb. 23 visit to her residence in Edison, Durham attempted to hide her 5-year-old from investigators and claimed the girl’s twin sister lived permanently with paternal relatives in North Carolina, authorities said.
Durham’s daughter told child protection investigators Chiles had beaten her, but she denied having a twin sister, authorities said.
For months, Durham and Chiles “obstructed and stonewalled” additional attempts by child protection officials to check on the welfare of the 5-year-old girl as they attempted to locate her twin, authorities said. The name Durham gave for the relative caring for the missing twin was later determined to be false, authorities said.
When police attempted to question the couple about the missing girl and fictitious story on July 26, they found the Edison apartment vacant, authorities said.
They were found the next day in a Metuchen motel, police said.
Durham told police that Chiles abused both of her daughters for years, according to the affidavit of probable cause. After Chiles beat the 2-year-old girl to death in 2019, Durham told investigators she saw him leave the house carrying her body in the middle of the night and returning without it, authorities said.
Investigators have not said if the girl’s body has been recovered.
Durham also told police she knew Chiles continued to beat her other daughter repeatedly, including an attack in February that prompted the anonymous tip, authorities said.
In the three years since her daughter went missing, Durham continued to collect child support from the estranged father of the children, authorities said.
The twin and Durham’s three children were told the missing girl had been adopted and ordered never to speak about her again, authorities said.
Chiles is charged with first-degree murder, desecration of human remains and endangering the welfare of a child, officials said.
Durham faces two counts of endangering the welfare of a child and one count of theft, the prosecutor’s office said.
Both are being held at Middlesex County Adult Correctional Center pending a detention hearing.
