This highly controversial German film from 1931 is the original tale of lesbian love between teacher and student, detailing a crush that is overwhelmingly intense and unfortunately unrequited...or is it? It's hard to tell whether or not Elizabeth Von Bernburg, the beautiful young teacher and friendly ally to the teenagers at an all-girls boarding school feels the same way about new student Manuela as Manuela does about her. Things take a turn for the worse when Manuela makes the mistake of shouting her love from the rooftops, thereby alerting the stern headmistress. Ultimately, the intensity of her love for Fraulein Von Vernburg sends Manuela over the edge as she threatens to take her own life. Maedchen in Uniform, one of the earliest films to openly discuss homosexuality, was banned worldwide until First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt reversed the decision. At first look it is surprising how candid the filmmakers were about the overtly lesbian scenes; but then you remember how accepted homosexuality was before the Nazi regime took over in the 1940s, and can't help but wonder how much more progressed the fight for equal rights would be had Hitler never come to power.

These movies are great, I will try to look for them! I'm particularly curious with Maedchen in Uniform - you say 1931?! The only movies with similar themes that I've seen are Kissing Jessica Stein, Bound and Heavenly Creatures. Great hub! I simply love movies! :D
