Pornhub has pledged to crack down on illegal content after an exposé raised concerns about the platform being infested with videos of rape and child sex abuse.
The popular porn site announced major policy changes Tuesday aimed at rooting out such clips, including restrictions on who can upload videos and a new squad of content moderators that will seek out potentially illegal material.
“Over the years, we have put in place robust measures to protect our platform from non-consensual content,” Pornhub said in a blog post .
“While leading non-profit and advocacy groups recognize that our efforts have been effective, we know there is more to do.”
While Pornhub linked the shifts to a policy review it undertook in April, the announcement followed a sweeping New York Times report detailing the disturbing proliferation of harmful videos on the site and their devastating effects on survivors of rape and sexual assault.
The exposé by Times columnist Nicholas Kristof prompted Visa and Mastercard to investigate their business relationships with Pornhub, which is owned by the Luxembourg-based porn conglomerate MindGeek.
But the National Center on Sexual Exploitation expressed skepticism that Pornhub could be reformed in light of its checkered past.
“Pornhub cannot be trusted: it has profited for years from rape, child sexual abuse material, sex trafficking, and revenge pornography,” Dawn Hawkins, the organization’s senior vice president and executive director, said in a statement. “Any number of ‘improvements’ will not change that fact.”
In its biggest change, Pornhub will only allow verified users to upload videos to the site. That privilege is currently restricted to Pornhub’s content partners and members of its “ Model Program, ” which requires performers to verify their identities by uploading a photo of themselves.
Pornhub said it will implement a new verification process sometime next year so anyone can upload videos once they successfully complete an “identification protocol.”
The move was applauded by sex workers, who have urged Pornhub to limit uploads to verified users and strengthen its verification process. Porn performer Ginger Banks launched an online petition calling for those changes earlier this year that has garnered more than 9,000 signatures.
But it’s unclear what Pornhub will do with videos that unverified users have already uploaded to the platform. The company didn’t immediately respond to an email seeking comment early Wednesday.
The site said it has also banned users from downloading any Pornhub videos besides those they pay to download from models in an effort to prevent clips that have already been removed from returning to the platform.
Additionally, Pornhub said it has established a new “Red Team” of content moderators that proactively sweeps the site for harmful clips along with a “Trusted Flagger Program” through which more than 40 nonprofit groups can alert the site to problematic videos.
Kristof, the author of the Times exposé, called the changes “a big deal” and expressed tepid optimism that they would stem the proliferation of perverted videos on the platform.
“A great deal depends on how responsibly Pornhub implements these, and it hasn’t earned my trust at all, but these seem significant,” Kristof said on Twitter .

Some are far less chaste than you might expect from porn of yore, and definitely not safe for work.

If your idea of good porn involves a randy dandy macking on matrons of the local haberdashery, loosen your bow ties and unfasten your corsets. Things are about to get steamy in the drawing room.
For its new Remastered project (warning: link leads to NSFW images), adult streaming-video website Pornhub has, with the help of AI, restored and colorized a series of vintage erotic films, some going back more than 100 years, and posted them online.
"These films show us that human sexuality was alive and well in the early 1900s," Pornhub says.
It's a fascinating romp through erotic history that's by turns charming, funny, artful and eye-opening.
The collection of 20 films spans the late 19th century to the 1940s. Some of the earlier offerings are pretty chaste. For example, in The Undressing, from 1896, a Victorian woman dares to show her naked feet. In The Hairdresser, from 1905, a woman styles her tresses, topless, looking like a classical painting come to life.
But later films are far less restrained than one might expect of ye olde sexy times -- and definitely not safe for (most) work. As early as the 1920s, the films show voyeurism, bondage, spanking and cosplay. There are sex toys, same-sex interludes, threesomes, foursomes and more-somes.
Long before the sexual revolution, it turns out, porn stars in petticoats engaged in a lot of the familiar erotic endeavors you'd see in adult films film today. "People don't often consider the prevalence of erotic films back then, but they were quite the commodity," Pornhub says.

Still, the footage is unmistakably vintage, with jumpy cuts and very little narrative structure. These short films, mostly from France, get straight to business.
In The Horny Haberdashery, from 1921, a male customer is hardly in the door before he drops his neatly pressed trousers to join two female workers engaged in maneuvers that would greatly concern today's HR.
In Surprised by the Guard, from 1930, a French farm girl is doing laundry outside when a soldier suddenly saunters up through the trees. It's immediately clear he's interested in more than having his coat cleaned. So is the next soldier who shows up to, well, enlist.
Adult movies date back to the beginning of motion pictures, when porn films were mostly anonymously produced and known as "stags." The earliest surviving porn movie is believed to be 1896 French film Le Coucher de la Mariée . It stars Louise Willy doing a tame striptease for her new husband as he slyly peeks and giggles from behind a dressing divider. Pornhub includes that early film in its Remastered series, renaming it Bedtime for the Bride.
Almost all stag productions were silent and black and white, even as the film industry adopted sound and color.
"This stylistic device contributed to the films' explicit allure," explains New York's Museum of Sex , "suggesting the reality of the sex acts being performed, as well as the underground and illicit nature of the pornographic film industry itself."
Since standard deep-learning models are trained using safe-for-work images, PornHub turned its AI on its library of 100,000 adult videos and images for a lesson in detecting body parts that take top billing in erotic films. Once the AI had colorized the black-and-white films, the team increased image stabilization, reduced flicker and increased the speed of the film to 60 frames per second. They added audio tracks, like player piano music typical of silent movies, that crescendo in all the right places.
"We thought it was important to not only preserve but modernize these films," Pornhub said. The relics will likely be a turn-on to porn and history buffs alike.

Citing the coronavirus and the need to stay away from others, the adult website is offering free access to Pornhub Premium for all users for the next month.

Even Pornhub wants you to stay inside to help stop the coronavirus from spreading. So to encourage you to do so, the adult website is offering free access to Pornhub Premium to all users for the next month.
The site has already been offering free access to Pornhub Premium in Italy, France, and Spain, which have all ordered lockdowns in response to the pandemic. But with other countries, including the US, enacting lockdowns, now users everywhere can enjoy the same deal.
“Since this is a situation that continues to impact us all, we've decided to play our part in encouraging everyone to stay home and are launching Free Premium worldwide until April 23,” Pornhub said in a blog post (Opens in a new window) on Tuesday.
Pornhub Premium normally costs $9.99 a month ($95.88 a year), and mainly offers you access to adult videos in HD quality without ads. Now you can use it for free by visiting Pornhub’s new “ StayHomehub (Opens in a new window) ” website.
Pornhub only asks that you either commit to isolating yourself at home, or agree to regularly wash your hands and practice social distancing amid the coronavirus pandemic. You’ll also have to sign up with a username, password, and email address.
As part of today’s announcement, the website is also giving all its models a 100 percent payout from both Pornhub and Modelhub during the month of April, citing the financial impact from the pandemic. “We have always been a global community, hosting Models from every corner of the world. So when a global human crisis happens, it is up to everyone to work together to help support the community, and that includes us, too,” Pornhub wrote in the blog post.

It's the most wonderful time of the year — not the holiday season, but "year in review" season. Pornhub just dropped their annual insights blog and according to them, 2019 was a "juicy year."
Thirty percent of Pornhub's U.S. visitors are women, which is a two percent increase from last year. According to their data, the most viewed categories between women and men vary, but really only in the order; most of the terms are the same:
Far and away the most viewed category for women is "lesbian," followed by "popular with women" and "Japanese." Conversely, the top category for men is "Japanese," while "amateur" and "mature" round out the top three.
Somewhat unsurprisingly, women viewed "pussy licking" videos over 200 percent more than men.
The pornstar that women searched for the most in 2019 was Lana Rhoades, who was the overall top searched as well. In second place was Jordi El Nino Polla, a male pornstar who was sixth on the overall list.
Four of the 10 pornstars women searched more than men are gay male pornstars, proving further that many women watch gay porn .
Rounding out Pornhub's data on women users is a fascinating state-by-state map of top searches. Interesting tidbits include women in frigid Alaska searching "party" more than any other state, and the women of Oklahoma getting their rocks off to tattooed women.
In terms of other insights, Pornhub seemed to have a banner year in 2019. The site saw a record amount of uploads with over 6.83 million new videos, which according to them means that if a viewer started watching new videos in 1850, they'd still be watching today — which is a slightly terrifying prospect.
Furthermore, the top three searches this year were "amateur," "alien" — harkening back to all the hoopla about Storm Area 51 — and "POV." You can see all of Pornhub's Year in Review here, and ruminate on all the NSFW content that the site will have in store for 2020.
