Maugham was one of the most popular writers of his era and reputedly the highest paid author during the 1930s. Of Human Bondage is a very long, sometimes tedious novel, and difficult to read because of the general lack of likability of most of its characters.
Second review: August 2020 It has been nine years since I first read Of Human Bondage, so I felt very overdue to revisit a book that I dubbed in my first review "ripe for reading again and again." Maybe I was a little scared that it wouldn't hold up. Well, I am in a re-reading mood in this second half of pandemic-laden 2020, and Maugham fit the bill. Trigger warnings in this book for ...

Maugham, in his novel The Razor's Edge, stated that "we the public in our heart of hearts all like a success story." Where could one find a better one than in the history of Of Human Bondage?

Of Human Bondage, by W. Somerset Maugham It was perhaps inevitable that I would eventually read this book, for at least two reasons. On the one hand, the book is one that appears often, and has occurred especially often in my recent readings about lashon hara, the Jewish idea of evil speech, in the way that the protagonist of the story is mercilessly teased for his club foot throughout his ...

More recent assessments generally rank Of Human Bondage - a book with a large autobiographical element - as a masterpiece, and his short stories are widely held in high critical regard. Maugham's plain prose style became known for its lucidity, but his reliance on clichés attracted adverse critical comment.

Looking for a great novel? This is my review of W. Somerset Maugham's "Of Human Bondage" with an emphasis on my personal associations. Many critics consider "Of Human Bondage" to be Maugham's finest work.
"Of Human Bondage" is, as Maugham was the first to admit, autobiographical fiction. The novel loosely follows the story of his youth: the loss of his beloved mother, unhappy years at his uncle's vicarage, boarding school, a sojourn in Germany instead of a university in England, a season as an artiste in Paris, abortive stabs at romance, total abasement with a vulgar woman who loathes and ...

Book review: 'Of Human Bondage' by W. Somerset Maugham by County Line | Mar 31, 2021 | Extra By LARRY BALLWAHN | Wilton Philip Carey was born with a club foot. That fact — that handicap — colored his every perception. We see the world through Philip Carey's eyes and experiences. Philip is only 5 when his mother dies.
W. Somerset Maugham's (25 January 1874 - 16 December 1965) twenty novels are exceptionally uneven; the first eight, though interesting, suggest the efforts of a young novelist to discover where his talent lies. From the publication of Of Human Bondage (1915) through The Razor's Edge (1944), he produced his most significant prose works.
