October 13 No Bra Day
The inaugural No Bra Day was observed on July 9, 2011 . It was initiated by an anonymous Internet user under the nickname Anastasia Doughnuts, who created a website promoting the event. She encouraged women not to wear bras at least one day a year to give their breasts a rest. And those who for some reason can’t or don’t want to go braless, as well as men, can wear something purple to show their support.
No Bra Day is also linked to BRA Day , an event launched by Toronto plastic surgeon Dr. Mitchell Brown in October 2011. In this case, BRA is also an acronym for “breast reconstruction awareness”. Dr. Brown noticed that many women didn’t want to undergo reconstructive surgery after undergoing mastectomy due to breast cancer. So he started BRA Day to raise awareness of the availability of the procedure.
But it isn’t the only goal of BRA Day, because at the end of the day, women don’t have to undergo breast reconstructive surgery just because they’re expected to. The event also aims to raise awareness of the importance of regular self-examinations and breast cancer screening , because women whose breast cancer is detected at an early stage have an over 90 percent survival rate.
Women are encouraged to forego wearing a bra on No Bra Day for one simple reason: the discomfort caused by wearing an ill-fitted bra (and most women, in fact, wear bras that don’t fit properly and are too small for them) can make them miss the first signs of breast cancer. This is why women should spend at least 24 hours a year braless, so that they realize the importance of wearing a properly fitted bra and regular self-examinations.
Although the inaugural No Bra Day was held in July, two years later it was decided to move the official day of the event to October 13, since October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month in the United States and many other countries. In 2013 and 2014, the event was held both in October and in July. Since 2015, October 13 has been its only date. As of 2017, No Bra Day was observed by hundreds of thousands of women in 30 countries.
Every October 13, women all over the world go braless not only to support the breast cancer awareness campaign, but also to demonstrate their right for bodily autonomy . They protest against the sexualization of female breasts and bras, as well as against body shaming of women who don’t wear bras for whatever reason. A woman’s body is her own business, and no one has the right to dictate women whether they should or shouldn’t wear a bra.
By the way, physicians and researchers have proven that, contrary to a popular misconception, going braless doesn’t lead to breast sagging. Moreover, it has a number of health benefits . Going braless improves blood circulation, prevents neck, shoulder and back pain caused by an ill-fitted bra, improves breast skin health, and makes women feel more comfortable once they get used to not wearing a bra.

If you are a young girl or a mature woman and you are reading this, you will get to know what this day refers to when it says to remove your bra once you reach home is a great pleasure! However, people do not celebrate #NationalNoBraDay only for this little comfort that all women can relate to. There’s more to it.
People observe #NoBraDay to fight against breast cancer. Only those women who have already experienced breast cancer know the pain of this. It is a horrible disease. Sometimes it can have a heartbreaking conclusion. #NoBraDay encourages women worldwide to leave their bra to raise awareness against this dangerous disease. It is an excellent day to support women who have already had breast cancer or are suffering from the same disease at the moment. It is also for raising awareness about the condition to fight for it and cure the disease.
Breast cancer is one of the most popular and common forms of cancer. The experts are saying that one in every eight women suffers from this disease once in a lifetime. That’s a pretty high number. Although there is a good chance of recovery, there have still been many women who have lost their lives because of this terrible disease.
Early diagnosis is always useful and effective. Breast cancer is most common in women over the age of 50 years. However, women of any age can get it. That is why women of the United States and the whole world observe 13th October as #NoBraDay to stay healthy and raise voices to fight breast cancer. Here are some of the common reasons for celebrating National No Bra Day:
There are several ways to celebrate this day. Not wearing a bra always means that you are spreading awareness against breast cancer. Here are some of the popular ways to observe National No Bra Day.
Celebrating No Bra Day is as simple as not wearing a bra, but if you’re in the mood to do more for yourself and others, then there are several important options. First off, get yourself to your doctor and schedule a breast exam. Catching breast cancer early isn’t tricky, and if you do so, you’ll have a greater chance of coming out of it without so much as a scar. Encourage your friends to do the same, and maybe even take some time to work together to create a fundraiser or support a local agency that’s holding one.
There are several other ways that you can celebrate No Bra Day as well. It would help if you were to raise awareness about the condition. Thanks to the Internet and social media, this is something that we can do with much greater ease today.
There will be many infographics and informative pieces of content going around online, so make sure to share these with your friends, followers, and family members. You can also share stories about breast cancer survivors and share information about the hard work done by many worldwide in the fight against cancer.
Another idea for No Bra Day is to fundraise for the cause. There are many cancer charities out there, and we are sure that they would appreciate your help. That includes charities for people with breast cancer and their families too. You could organize an event in your local area, for instance.
From fun runs to cake sales, there are many different options. If you are a craft person, you may decide to make something and sell it online, with the proceeds (or at least some of them) going to a breast cancer charity.
There are also some other ways to celebrate this day, for example:
If you are a woman and you are reading this, you will know exactly what we are referring to when we say that removing your bra once you get home is one of life’s great pleasures! If you are a man, you will just have to take our word for it. However, No Bra Day does not celebrate this little comfort that all women can relate to. It is much bigger and more important than this.
No Bra Day is about the fight against breast cancer. A lot of people know someone who has experienced breast cancer. It is a horrible disease, which can have a heartbreaking conclusion. No Bra Day encourages women around the world to ditch their bra to raise awareness for this disease. It is an excellent day in terms of supporting women who have experienced breast cancer or are going through it at the moment and raising awareness about the condition so that we can, hopefully, find a cure for it.
Breast cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer. It is believed that one in eight women will be diagnosed with this illness in their lifetime. That’s a pretty high number! While there is a good chance of recovery, there have been a lot of women who have lost their lives because of this terrible disease.
Early diagnosis is imperative, and while breast cancer is most common in women over the age of 50-years-old, women of any age can get it. We must have days like No Bra Day to raise awareness about this condition and make sure that we are all doing our best to raise funds and education to find a cure for breast cancer.

No Bra Day was established to raise awareness of breast cancer and its prevalence in today’s society and drive fundraising opportunities to keep the research moving. 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer in their lives and have to battle a disease that can, at worst, be lethal.
But outside of just its lethality, it also has the possibility of impacting a woman’s view of herself, her ability to breastfeed and can result in surgeries that include mastectomies. Breasts are the primary identifiers of what makes a woman, visually, a woman, and having them removed in the fight against breast cancer can lead to self-image issues and depression.
Why is it that women everywhere choose not to wear a bra to raise awareness of this horrible disease? Women who have been through a battle with breast cancer often have to wear a prosthesis to hide the fact that they’ve had a breast or breasts removed and are unable to go without a bra as a result. By spending the day without a bra, you can raise awareness and prevent other women from going through this experience.
National No Bra Day’s origins can be traced back to two days in history: July 9, 2011, and October 19, 2011. The latter was founded in Toronto, Canada, where it was initially titled BRA Day by Dr Mitchell Brown. People celebrate BRA (Breast Reconstruction — An Event of Learning and Sharing) Day to raise awareness for women who undergo a mastectomy and encourage self-examinations. In July that same year, a person using the pseudonym Anastasia Doughnuts conceived National No Bra Day to raise breast cancer awareness, along with a website to help promote the event’s occurrence. Three years later, the two days were combined and pushed to October 13 to be celebrated during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
In 1600 BC, The first case of any cancer showed up in Egypt on The Edwin Smith Papyrus. It described eight different cases of growths and ulcers found within the breast. In the year 1882, American surgeon William Halsted performed the Halsted Mastectomy (which is considered the first radical mastectomy). In 1985 A weeklong organized event occurred in the United States to spread breast cancer awareness. In 1991, The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation began handing out pink ribbons to breast cancer survivors running in its Race For The Cure event.

No Bra Day is an annual observance of October 13 on which women are encouraged to go braless as a means to encourage breast cancer awareness.
No Bra Day was initially observed on July 9, 2011, but for the past three years it had moved to the 13th day of the National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, October.
Users on social media are encouraged to post using the hashtag #nobraday to promote awareness of breast cancer symptoms and to encourage gender equality.
Some users on social media sites also encourage women to post pictures of themselves not wearing a bra. Some women embrace No Bra Day as a political statement while others prefer the comfort of discarding what they view as a restrictive, uncomfortable garment.
The original event known as “BRA Day” was started by Toronto plastic surgeon Dr. Mitchell Brown. The first BRA Day event, titled “Breast Reconstruction – An Evening of Learning and Sharing”, was held in Toronto, Canada at Women’s College Hospital and Toronto General Hospital on October 19, 2011.
Brown found that many Canadian women who underwent a mastectomy due to breast cancer resisted undergoing reconstructive surgery.
He founded “Breast Reconstruction Awareness” (BRA) Day to increase women’s awareness of the availability of reconstructive breast surgery. BRA day is intended to raise awareness of breast cancer screening, alert women to breast cancer symptoms, and to encourage women to conduct regular self- examinations. The event was adopted in the U.S. in 2012.
As of September 2018, the BRA Day event devoted to educating women about reconstructive surgery, and hosted by the Canadian Cancer Society, continued to be held across Canada. BRA day is observed on different dates in different provinces of Canada during the month of October.
The origin of No Bra Day can be traced back to the first BRA Day held in Toronto, in 2011. In July that year, an anonymous individual using the name Anastasia Doughnuts conceived of No Bra Day and published the first website promoting the event
Bra Day is also a way to encourage women to enjoy being braless and to become knowledgeable about breast cancer symptoms. The day is controversial as some see it as sexualizing and exploiting women’s bodies while at the same time belittling a serious disease.
