This EP (5 songs) continues what Effloresce started. 'One Out of None' begins with ultra-heavy and layered guitar sounds and then the songs begin to take you on a musical journey in which you actually feel like you get somewhere in the end. Fans of metal will think its too soft and others will think it is too heavy. I think it is best of both worlds. You may need to take a nap after listening to this. Start with Effloresce first and then buy this as the companion piece.

Music For Nurses is the 5-track EP that comes hot on the heels of Oceansize's brilliant in parts though inconsistent debut, 'Effloresce'. 'Music For Nurses' suffers from the opposite problem: everything here is good, but nothing stands out as brilliant'. Though, on paper, opener 'one out of nONE' ought to be brilliant: an explosive diversion into the territory of metal, it doesn't quite come off, as the verses sound like rehashed Oceansize, despite a brilliant riff and some top-drawer screaming. It powers through various sections almost too quickly, and thus comes across as good but not as great as it might have been. 'Paper Champion' is a building, atmospheric number; 'Dead Dogs An' All Sorts' flies the post-rock torch, and 'As The Smoke Clears' is a far slower metal number. All are accomplished, but they lack the killer intensity (and tunes) of tracks like 'Catalyst' or 'One Day All This Could Be Yours'. Worth having, but could have been better.

This 5-song (4-song if you don't count the ambient instrumental "Drag the Nal" a true song) EP is veeery good. It flows together well as one piece and contains one of Oceansize's hardest rocking songs ("One out of None"). This isn't a good starting point to listening to the band, as to some of the songs are oddly spaced and require many listens to fully appreciate. So I suggest Effloresce if you are new to Oceansize. That is all. It's good, buy it. (But 14.99 is a crazy price. I got mine for 3.98 at a local music store).

The guy below hasn'r really got a clue. This is a progression from Effloresce, which was a masterpiece. But sounds change, Oceansize have scrapped some of the melodic stuff for a more post rock, experimental and grittier sound. One Out of nONE does work and like all other Size tracks, builds to an epic end. Paper Champion is probably the most accessible track with a simple melody and thumping base riff. The last 3 tracks all blend as one. Drag the 'Nal works as a fine atmospheric intro to Dead Dogs which is the stand-out track on this e.p. As the Smoke Clears finishes in a similarly apocalyptic fashion. It only leaves you wanting more than 25 minutes worth.

5 tracks are enough to amaze anyone when it comes to Oceansize. It has some of their best songs, like "One Out of nONE" or "Paper Champion", and the 3 closing songs (which could perfectly be one single track) flow extremely well. Perfect EP.

"Music for Nurses" verdient das Prädikat "Appetitanreger".

Review Summary: The 25-minute masterpiece “Music for Nurses” seems like the very best parts of an Oceansize album compressed as much as possible.
Album Rating: 4.5 the EP is pretty rare btw, I don't think there's any chance of getting a physical copy. (not that long ago I saw an offer for about 50€!!!), but downloading it from amazon costs only 5$. it's really really worth it, I promise.
This is just so good. They played the whole thing a few years back and it was incredible. This Message Edited On 05.02.08
Good review.

So I wanted to buy it, but Amazon is U.S. customers only.

Fuck.

Anyone got a link? I can't find a torrent.
Album Rating: 4.5 sorry, didn't know about that problem with amazon.
can't help you really, all I could do is search google, but you've done that I guess.
Album Rating: 3.0 5 is a little over the top, but this is a good release indeed.
Album Rating: 4.5 I'd say 3 is a little bit of an understatement ;)
Oceansize is one of my favorite bands of all time but i think a 5 is a little exaggerating.

Effloresce is a 5, definitely.
Album Rating: 4.5 hm, I've thought about the rating for a long time, it isn't like I just came up with a five to get this more attention or anything, I really think this is a classic - Effloresce is also great, but too inconsistent to be a 5-star album.
well, there's always taste and everything but I recommend to give this album a few more tries, it needs time to grow and unfold, just like I've written in the review.
If this is anything as good as Frames, it's amazing.
Album Rating: 4.5 ok, four months after my rating was criticized, I finally give in and lower the rating to a 4.5
don't know exactly why, I still love it as much as back when I wrote it but reading through the review, it just seems as the tiny extra point to make it a 5 star album is missing. But it's as close as it can be.
^^ I would say they were still working out their sound at this point, I think their post-frames release will be a fantastic 5-star.
Album Rating: 5.0 One issue with this review: Mike does the screaming, not Steve. Mike has a second mic which he uses for screams and this is often adjusted to give his voice a weird sound. Otherwise great review...although it should've been a 5 obviously cause it's Oceansize!
Album Rating: 5.0 I think this is quite possibly the best EP I have ever heard. It follows a very classical form, like a piece in several movements, which has a loud beginning and end, and a soft middle section. Paper Champion is a good transition from One Out of None, and Dead Dogs and All Sorts is one of the most epic build-ups I have ever heard
Album Rating: 4.5 Why is everything Oceansize do so good.

Well except home & minor.
Album Rating: 4.0 Even Home and Minor was pretty solid. Band just has loads of talent.
Album Rating: 4.5 It was alright just not at the same level as everything else i've heard by them.
Album Rating: 4.0 I hear you. I think the new album will probably have a better sound than Home and Minor. Because the thought of a not completely awesome full length by these guys is kind of scary.
Album Rating: 4.5 I'm hoping the new one sounds like a continuation of this EP, even though this was released like 6 years ago. The generally shorter song lengths and the comments that it contains some of their heaviest material have me excited.
Album Rating: 4.0 You're right, a continuation of this style would be just great. But I didn't know it was going to have heavier moments. You're kind of getting me excited now. Release date is coming up soon, so we'll just have to wait and see.
