I rented this movie because I liked Melancholia. I looked at the director and wanted to see more films he did. I also love Stellan Skarsgård so rent it. I didn't finish the movie because it went way over the top with this fishing references and the rape scene. Just gross. I knew from the title and description that this movie was controversial but they way it was filmed made me think the director hates women. I can't believe this is a 2 part movie too.

I absolutely loved this movie!! Its extremely sexual; hence the title, lol, so that was expected. No big surprises there or anything but I was just amazed at how well & how brilliantly this movie was put together. Of course if you watch Nymphomaniac 1, you HAVE TO watch Nymphomaniac 2; As it is the 2nd part of the film. Duh. Lol. But by the end of this film I really had a whole new sense of sympathy for anyone suffering from this affliction. I highly suggest this film to anyone curious about or interested in the topic at hand. Great film!!💯✌🏼

I didn't know this movie was out in theaters. All i recall is Shia at press interviews acting crazy and i didn't even know that this was the film he was promoting. Anyways, this movie is about a sex addict that is saved by a man after a beating and she decides to tell him the story of her life and how she became a sex addict. The nude and sex scenes are NOT over the top. They are very brief and quick, so i don't think its exploiting any of the actors, or over the top, or a movie that is meant to shock people because it reminds people of porn. Don't let the film posters fool you into thinking that this is a film that is insanely sexually charged because that is the furthest thing from it. In fact, movies like Basic Instinct are far more sexual than this. This film is provocative and also makes one think. Are we monsters for having sexual urges and desires? The main character played by Charlotte Gainsbourg recalls how everything started from her child hood and the things she would do out of sexual curiosity. She constantly paints herself as a horrible person for having these sexual feelings and for being an overly sexual person. Of course, things start getting really intense as she becomes a teenager and has Shia take her virginity. The movie is 2 hours and i guess everyone is probably waiting for the main attraction which is the scene between the main character and Shia which doesn't happen till about 2 mins before the film ends. I thought this film was beautifully shot and the performances are amazing. I was also pleasantly surprised by Christian Slaters performance. It also starts with some interesting rock music during the opening and ending credits. I am glad i saw this film. I don't know any theaters that are playing it. I can't wait to see the 2nd volume and i think anyone with Amazon Instant Video access should rent this. You will not be disappointed.

I loved Melancholia, so I rented this movie since it was another Lars von Trier film. I had heard a lot of outrage over this film being pornography, but outside of a scene in the final 5 minutes with Shia LaBeouf (which I would have not even realized but for the fact that due to all the controversy I was looking for a "no no" by American standards), there was no more nudity than what is seen on American cable tv these days. The plot is slow, but intriguing. I liked Skarsgard's performance in this film and I like Christian Slater's performance as well. Joe's father's death sequence was impactful and was the first time I've ever seen Slater really act. Overall, I am torn with this movie. It is neither fantastic nor horrible, it just is.

this was a pretty disturbing movie. But honestly there are a lot of girls like this these days, getting run through by dozens or even hundreds of guys in their twenties. Then later they wonder what went wrong and why no one calls them anymore. they got used up and spit out. Sad, actually. But it made for a decent film experience.

I'm reviewing both parts in this because I honestly don't want to waste my time reviewing this film twice. Nymphomaniac: Volume 1 tells the story of Joe who, for some reason, enjoys non-stop sex with strangers. Did I spoil anything? :P Volume 1 opens up with an Present-Day Joe beaten in an alley and a good Samaritan helps her up and taker her into his home. Then, we get to know how Joe ended up there. This part of the film is about Joe's early life where she discusses the discovery of her sexuality at a young age. She seems pressured by one of her friends to be risky, and that's what you see in 'The Compleat Angler' scene. It definitely gets to the point about what a Nymphomaniac is, but I never figured out why Joe 1) hated her mother 2) why she found that being a nymphomaniac was more important than being a doctor and 3) if the wound she had was from a disease or something, I have no clue. I just wanted to see a more direct link to her desire for sex such as depression or family life. Nymphomaniac: Part 2 is just... eh. The scene where Joe discussed her desire for 'Negro' men, I was turned off completely. I was turned off by the term and von Trier's defense for it. He uses Joe's character to defend the use of the word and that comes off as whiny and weak to me. In the end, I just felt terrible for Joe as she goes through so much abuse without knowing how to be loved at all. Also, the men who initiated the abuse are also terrible people but no one will hold them responsible for their actions because "that's what men do." I hate that it's true in our current society and every time some speaks up about it, they get bullied to shut up. I know I'm rambling, but to sum it up I just feel like there could have been more but knowing that the American version of this film is a censored version, maybe some important details got lost.

"Nymphomaniac," a two-part drama from director Lars von Trier, tackles the issue of sex addiction as brutally and unapologetically as "Requiem for a Dream" did with drug addiction. And while this film is unlikely to receive the kind of accolades that "Requiem" did upon its release, it is still a deeply moving film that explores a very real and very disturbing problem. The film boasts a number of well-known actors, including Charlotte Gainsbourg (Antichrist), Uma Thurman (Pulp Fiction), Shia LaBeouf (Transformers) and Christian Slater (True Romance), who each bring the film to life with all-around solid performances. The film, right from the opening scene, lets you know pretty quickly what you're in for. It opens in England on a snowy evening where a woman (Gainsbourg) lies beaten and unconscious in an alleyway, where she is helped by a lonely older man named Seligman (Stellan Skarsgard). After she refuses to let him call the police, he takes her back to his apartment, where of course, he asks to know what happened to her. The woman, named Joe, reveals to him that she is a nymphomaniac and explains that in order for him to truly understand how she ended up in the alley, she would have to start from the very beginning. This is where the story really begins, and through extended flashbacks, we are transported to the earlier days of Joe's life (the younger Joe is played by Stacy Martin), beginning with her childhood where she was raised by her cold, distant mother (Connie Nielson) and her devoted father (Christian Slater). Troubled by her parents' dysfunctional relationship, Joe has gone through life with an antagonistic view of love. She also finds it difficult to feel emotionally connected to anyone or anything. In fact, the only means she has of filling this void is through sex. She goes from having sex just to try it to engaging in a contest with her friend over who can have sex with the most men on a train, all for a bag of chocolates. It's not too long before Joe's social and emotional fulfillment consist entirely of sex, reaching a point to where she has so many lovers that she can't even tell them apart and must resort to listing them as letters of the alphabet. Her addiction is such that even after being confronted by the heartbroken wife of one her lovers, played with great intensity by Uma Thurman, she continues on with her lifestyle despite the toll her actions are taking on her. Suffice it to say, this film is not for everyone, and it certainly isn't trying to be. The film is very explicit in its language and depictions of sex, and therefore it's not going to appeal to people who find such content offensive. Now, on the other hand, if you're going into this hoping for "50 Shades of Grey: the Movie," then this is not the film you're looking for. There may be numerous sex scenes in the film and they are indeed graphic, but only because of how realistic they feel. They are not meant to be gratuitous or sexy. In fact, quite the opposite. During these scenes, you feel the kind of discomfort that you would with a film about a drug addict in that you are witnessing a person destroy themselves. As an audience member, you want to reach out to Joe and tell her to stop but of course, you can't, making it all the more distressing to watch. This is not what you'd call "a light at the end of the tunnel" kind of movie, another reason why it's definitely not for everybody. That said, to anyone who truly appreciates the kind of great filmmaking that this is, then I would daresay this is a must-see. On a visual level, this has to be one of the most beautifully shot films I've seen in a long time. In the beginning scene alone, there's a shot of snow falling in an alleyway and it's done in a way where the snow looks like it's popping right off the screen. The performances are really what make this film work as well as it does. Charlotte Gainsbourg, who, despite not being in the film all that much, is captivating whenever she's onscreen. She deftly captures Joe's despair and self-hatred so that despite her wrongdoings, we still feel sympathy towards her. Stacy Martin as young Joe likewise captures the character's lack of social confidence. I can see many young actresses being intimidated to take on a role as physically demanding as this, but Martin handles her numerous sex scenes very professionally. Stellan Skarsgard is completely charming and funny as Joe's seemingly nonjudgmental savior who continually tries to justify her actions to her, even going so far as to compare her condition to fly-fishing. I would say that Shia LaBeouf is the weakest link here, who just kind of mumbles his way through his lines, probably to hide his atrocious attempt at a cockney accent. He's not bad in the film, but compared to the performances of his fellow cast members, his feels the least inspired. On the other hand, a performance that does feel very inspired comes from Christian Slater as Joe's father. Seriously, how long has it been since you could say that? Slater, in the limited screen time he is given, proves that he can do much more than a decent Jack Nicholson impersonation and has a much wider range than he gets credit for. The relationship between his character and Joe is beautiful and heartwarming and it makes you want to see more of Slater again. Hopefully this film will help to put him back on the map and that he'll get some more films worth his talent. Fingers crossed. "Nymphomaniac" is very bold in how it addresses sex addiction. It does not point fingers or try to vilify sex addicts but rather explores the psychology of someone driven to this kind of lifestyle. Despite how disturbing and gloomy this film is, I still greatly look forward to Volume Two (which comes out this April)and am curious to see how this fascinating story concludes. I give this film five stars and only hope that the second part of the film is just as impressive.

Nymphomaniac is yet another raw look at the human condition by Lars von Trier. It is a story about a self-proclaimed nymphomaniac that is told through anecdotes. These anecdotes about Joe, our main character, can be thought of as brush-strokes that are helping us understand her actions and her current state. Seligman, a man who helped her off the street and is allowing her to recover at his home - listens to her anecdotes, unconvinced that she is the dark and unsympathetic character she claims she is. The film draws some incredibly insightful links between sexuality and flyfishing, as well as sex and polyphony. The first analogy seems to imply that sexuality is expressed in a certain manner, at a certain time, in a certain location to reel in the biggest fish, the fish we most desire, and the hardest fish to catch. We need that fish (lover) more than anything, and we use everything at our disposable, our body, mannerisms/body language, psychological tricks such as 'damsel in distress' or simple visual stimulation, bright colors, and/or rapid movement to lure that fish in. The second analogy discusses the idea of polyphony, which in essence means multiple sounds/melodies. Human beings can often be categorized as one of those tones. A father that works 9-5 for his entire life and provides for his family and loves, respects, and is faithful to his wife & kids could be described as a bass tone - something that is absolutely necessary and serves as a wonderful foundation but isn't as 'exciting' as the other tones/human beings. Joe craves multiple tones and pure tones. By pure tones, I mean tones that fill a very specific role and appeal to her in a very specific way. These might be a defining characteristic of nymphomaniacs. I highly suggest watching this film simply for the abundance of original (at least to me) ideas about defining human beings and how we operate.
