Nymeria Sand , nicknamed Lady Nym , is a bastard daughter of Oberyn Martell and a noblewoman from Volantis . She is the second oldest of the infamous Sand Snakes , so named for their bastard origin and the nickame of their father, the "Red Viper". In the television adaptation Game of Thrones she is portrayed by Jessica Henwick and stated to be the daughter of a YiTish noblewoman instead of a Volantene one.

Nymeria is twenty-five years old, slim and slender as a willow, with straight black hair worn in a long braid which pulls back from a widow's peak. [1] [4] She has dark eyes [1] which are large and lustrous. [4] Her full lips are wine red and curve in a silken smile, [1] [4] and she has high cheekbones. [1] Areo Hotah describes Nym as having pale white skin in A Feast for Crows [1] [3] but mentions her olive skin in A Dance with Dragons . [4] Nymeria has all the beauty that her elder sister Obara Sand lacks but is no less deadly. [1] Although elegant, Nym is vengeful. [4]

Nymeria dresses gracefully in shimmering lilac robes with a silk cape of cream and copper , [1] and she also owns a yellow silk gown so sheer it reveals spun gold and jewels worn underneath. [4] Nymeria rides a gold sand steed with a mane like white silk. [1] Nym usually conceals a dozen daggers on her person [4] and is proficient with the hidden blades. [1]

Nymeria is good friends with Jeyne and Jennelyn Fowler . [5]

Nymeria's mother comes from the noblest blood of Volantis , [1] the Free City where Nym was born. [6]

Young Nym sometimes joined in play at the Water Gardens with her sister, Tyene Sand , her cousin, Princess Arianne Martell , Garin , Andrey Dalt , and Sylva Santagar . [5] Arianne keeps in her boot a throwing knife gifted to her by Nymeria. [7]

Nymeria is abed with the Fowler twins, Jeyne and Jennelyn , when she is told of the death of her father, Prince Oberyn Martell , in King's Landing . [1] Ser Daemon Sand sends her a raven explaining how Ser Gregor Clegane was poisoned by Oberyn and is now dying. [1]

Accompanied by a dozen mounted spearmen, Nymeria meets Doran Martell , the Prince of Dorne and Oberyn's elder brother, en route from the Water Gardens to Sunspear . She demands vengeance for the death of her father and rejects the offer Lord Tywin Lannister made Doran for Gregor's head. Instead of open war, Nymeria wants to assassinate Tywin, his children Queen Regent Cersei and Ser Jaime Lannister , and his grandchild, King Tommen I Baratheon . After visits from Nym's other sisters, Doran has the Sand Snakes arrested and confined in the Spear Tower of Sunspear . [1]

Nymeria and her sisters are released and are present at the feast at Sunspear when Ser Balon Swann presents the Mountain's skull to Doran. Balon seems discomforted by her silk gown. When Balon tells the manner of Gregor's death, Nymeria celebrates his suffering. When Ricasso raises a toast to King Tommen, Nym declines with a flick of her wrist. [4]

Doran sends Nymeria to King's Landing to take the vacant Dornish seat on the small council . [4]

You know the Fowler words? Let Me Soar! That is all I ask of you. Let me soar, Uncle. [1]
Nymeria : Obara would make Oldtown our father's funeral pyre, but I am not so greedy. Four lives will suffice for me. Lord Tywin's golden twins, as payment for Elia's children. The old lion, for Elia herself. And last of all the little king , for my father .

Doran : The boy has never wronged us.

Nymeria : It ends in blood, as it began. It ends when Casterly Rock is cracked open, so the sun can shine on the maggots and the worms within. It ends with the utter ruin of Tywin Lannister and all his works.
Ellaria : The man died at the hand of his own son . What more could you wish?

Doran : We need a voice in council , an ear at court. Be careful, though. King's Landing is a pit of snakes.
Nymeria : Why, Uncle, I love snakes. [4]
Nymeria was least dangerous when nearly naked. Elsewise she was sure to have a dozen blades concealed about her person. [4]
Hotah studied each of them in turn. Obara , rusted nails and boiled leather, with her angry, close-set eyes and rat-brown hair. Nymeria, languid, elegant, olive-skinned, her long black braid bound up in red-gold wire. Tyene , blue-eyed and blond, a child-woman with her soft hands and little giggles. [4]
The Lady Nym. But no lady, if even half of what Qyburn reports is true. A bastard daughter of the Red Viper, near as notorious as her father and intent on claiming the council seat that Prince Oberyn himself had occupied so briefly. [8]

The most interesting element of the Sand Snakes in Game of Thrones was the irony that surrounded each of their violent deaths in season 7.
The deaths of the Sand Snakes in Game of Thrones season 7 were extremely clever. The Sand Snakes were the bastard daughters of Prince Oberyn Martell . Even though there were eight of them, the story surrounding the Sand Snakes focused on the three eldest: Obara, Nymeria, and Tyene. Each of their deaths was brutal but also very ironic.
The Sand Snakes were introduced in Game of Thrones season 4 after the death of their father. They were very loyal to House Martell and led by Oberyn's lover, Ellaria Sand, the mother of Tyene and the younger bastard daughters. Obara, Nymeria, and Tyene were skilled in combat at the request of Oberyn so they vowed to act revenge on the Lannisters. While pledging allegiance to Ellaria, they took out Prince Doran Martell, the head of the house at the time, to claim Dorne. They also hosted Olenna Tyrell in the hopes the families would join together in the fight against House Lannister .
The Sand Snakes were the only figures ready to fight on the front lines when it came to taking on key enemies. Ellaria and her three Sand Snakes supported Daenerys Targaryen's claim to the Iron Throne and were prepared to stage a fight at King's Landing. That would never happen as their deaths occurred over the course of two episodes in season 7. Cersei Lannister ended up getting the last laugh regarding the ongoing conflict between the families with the help of the Lord Reaper of Pyke, Euron Greyjoy . Even more interesting was the exact way the Sand Snakes met their deaths.
Obara and Nymeria were the first to die in Game of Thrones season 7 . The Sand Snakes joined Yara Greyjoy on her quest to Sunspear, but the ship was ambushed by Euron and his Iron Fleet. Obara, skilled with a spear, faced off with Euron directly during the fight onboard the ship. He managed to get the upper hand and impaled Obara with her own spear. Nymeria was killed in a similar fashion in that Euron used the bullwhip that served as her main weapon to strangle her. He then hung Nymeria's body from the ship's mast.
While her sisters stood their ground during the squirmish, Tyene ran to protect Ellaria Sand, her mother. The two were captured and sent to King's Landing by Euron. Since Ellaria killed the daughter of Cersei, the Queen of the Seven Kingdoms finally got her chance at revenge. Tyene was known for being a master when it came to poisons, and since Ellaria used poison to kill Myrcella , Cersei did the same. After mocking Ellaria, she kissed Tyene, giving her the poison that ultimately killed her. This last death just added to the irony since all three of the Sand Snakes were killed with the sole weapons that they had the most experience with. The detail surrounding their demise were extremely clever despite being their characters lacking depth in Game of Thrones .

Played piano competitively as a child.

Her role on the children's series Spirit Warriors made her the first East Asian actress to play the lead role in a British television series.

She plays the sister of Keisha Castle-Hughes and Rosabell Laurenti Sellers on Game of Thrones.

She was raised in Surrey, England. She received her acting training from the Redroofs Theatre School and the National Youth Theatre.

She was a finalist for the role of Rey in Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens (2015), which eventually went to Daisy Ridley . Director J.J. Abrams then wrote the role of Jessika Pava (credited as "Jess Testor") specifically for her.

It's always fun playing a villain, I do have to say.

I really struggle to fight and say lines at the same time. It's hard.

When I'm traveling, I like extremes. It's nice for me to go to Canada in the mountains where it's snowing or to Cambodia where it's stifling.

I went snorkeling between tectonic plates in Iceland's Silfra fissure in the winter. You have to wear thermal layers and a wet suit and what's called a 'teddy-bear suit' so you don't die of hypothermia. My lips still went blue. That was an experience that I will carry with me for the rest of my life - so beautiful and so quiet.

In Singapore, I'd spend the majority of my time at hawker centres because the food there is incredible.

I was always going back and forth between Singapore and the U.K.

I'm not a good katana user, bo staff user.

I was a real wild kid, spending much more time outdoors than I ever did indoors.

When I came on to 'Iron Fist,' it was really Colleen Wing that sold it for me. I thought it was a good opportunity to see a really strong female Asian American.

I've always made a point to play roles that aren't specified by their ethnicity.

I would love to see an Asian American superhero.

I grew up in the English countryside, raising ducks and chickens.

Asian food is amazing. I love a good Milo Dinosaur, bubble tea, and things like that.

I have a T-shirt that says Game of Stones, which has the Flintstones dressed as 'Game of Thrones' characters on it.

What I'm known for - 'Game of Thrones,' 'Star Wars' - they film in England, but they're American productions. Because American productions are willing to see Asian actors.

I don't want to perpetuate a stereotype. I don't want to take Asian representation backwards two steps. I don't want to be part of the problem.

One stereotype I get a lot as an Asian actress is that you're playing the model minority - that Asians are the best, that they're perfect and positively moral all the time.

It's very hard as an Asian actress to get seen for anything which isn't specifically Asian in England.

I'm Asian, and I'm an actress, and I've been doing this since I was a teenager, so if anyone understands the conversation about misrepresentation and underrepresentation, it's me. I live and breathe it; this is my life.

There's something about fantasy and sci-fi that seems more welcoming of different ethnicities.

I think, back in the day, the ultimate trifecta was considered 'Harry Potter,' 'Lord of the Rings,' and maybe 'Star Trek.'

I had been in talks with Marvel prior to 'Iron Fist,' and I had researched all the prominent female roles that I was interested in. Colleen Wing came up really early in the process, and I had a strange feeling.

I've been extremely lucky in that I've been able to play roles that are not defined by their ethnicity. But that's not a common thing for people of ethnic minorities.

When you use the whip, it makes the loudest crack. It's a very, very difficult weapon to use.

There's nowhere in London where you can use a whip without getting too much attention.

Honestly, it was just tiring going straight from one show to the other. I filmed 'Iron Fist,' and then I had a two week break, and I went straight into 'The Defenders.'

My agent and I are very clear on what kind of roles I'm interested in, and I don't want to perpetuate any stereotypes.

It's tough, because I come to Singapore, and people say I'm not Singaporean, and I go to England, and people say I'm not English. It's really hard to find your place, not just in the entertainment industry, but in life.

In British TV, if there is an Asian character, there usually has to be a reason for them to be Asian, whereas in America, you have a lot more roles where the person just happens to be Asian.

I think I was just constantly seeking mental stimulation from anything I could get.

The U.K. and the U.S. are in different places. Don't get me wrong - I am there for the U.K. industry, and I am always searching for more roles to play there, but it's sparse.

As a female actress - I've been doing this since I was a teenager - I often got approached with the ingenue roles: naive and wide-eyed and childlike.

I want to continue to broaden expectations of what an Asian can be.

For me, I really liked the idea of playing a non-superhero on a superhero show.

'The Joy Luck Club' is not a perfect film. But, I distinctly remember watching it with my mom - and bursting into tears after the screening!

The state of the industry is much like the state of politics. It's too middle-aged, white, and male.

As soon as you start looking into roles which are specifically Asian, Black, or Latina, you start looking at stereotypes. That's the issue minority actors face - it's not that we don't want to play our ethnicities; it's that, often, the role that's written for our ethnicity is a stereotype.

I turned down a lot of work. I didn't want to ever feel defined by my ethnicity.

Becoming an actress was just about being in the right place at the right time.

I learned more on 'Spirit Warriors' than I think I have on any other job.

I turned down a lot of parts, and I ate a lot of canned tuna for dinner because I was just like, 'No, I don't want to do that; no, that's awful.' But sticking to my guns paid off, and I can look back now and be proud that I refused to take any stereotypical Asian parts.
