Nylon’s toughness, low coefficient of friction and good abrasion resistance make it an ideal replacement for a wide variety of materials from metal to rubber. It weighs only 1/7 as much as bronze. Using nylon reduces lubrication requirements, eliminates galling, corrosion and pilferage problems, and improves wear resistance and sound dampening characteristics. Nylon has a proven record of outstanding service in a multitude of parts for such diverse fields as paper, textiles, electronics, construction, mining, metalworking, aircraft, food and material handling.
Nylon is easily fabricated into precision parts using standard metalworking equipment. Its good property profile combined with a broad size range availability have made the material very popular since first introduced in 1946. Today, a variety of extruded and cast nylon grades are available to match specific application demands.
Nylon 6 is a cast material that has improved low-temp impact resistance and better long term heat resistance than extruded Nylon 6/6. Nylon 6 has the highest rate of absorption of all of the PA formulations but is easily modified through the addition of certain additives like glass fiber and ofther compounds.
Cast Type 6
 Virgin: Unfilled-FDA, USDA & 3-A Dairy compliant
 Heat Stabilized: Increased use temperature
 Oil Filled: Increased wear & bearing properties
 MoS2 Filled: Improved load carrying and impact properties
 MoS2 & Oil Filled: Better surface lubricity without losing strength
 Solid Lubricant Filled: Highest Limiting PV and lowest wear rates

Because of nylon’s versatility, it is one of the most widely used engineering thermoplastics. Commercially available nylons include nylon 6, nylon 4/6, nylon 6/6, nylon 6/10, nylon 6/12, nylon 11 and nylon 12. The numerical nomenclature for nylon is derived from the number of carbon atoms in the diamine and dibasic acid monomers used to manufacture it. The ratio of carbon atoms is what gives each nylon type its unique property characteristics.
Nylon 6 is a tough, abrasion-resistant material. It has improved surface appearance and processability compared to nylon 6/6. It also can be molded about 80 degrees F (45 degrees C) lower with less mold shrinkage because it is slightly less crystalline. Adversely, nylon 6 has a lower modulus and absorbs moisture more rapidly than nylon 6/6. Moisture acts as a plasticizer, reducing tensile strength and stiffness and increasing elongation. But, while absorbed moisture reduces many properties, nylon owes part of its toughness to the plasticizing effect of moisture. As moisture content rises, significant increases occur in impact strength and general energy absorbing characteristics. Properly recognized and accounted for, the effect of moisture on the processing and properties of nylon need not be of great concern.
All nylons can be reinforced with glass fibers, glass beads, and carbon fibers to improve their mechanical and thermal performance. Filled materials containing PTFE and molybdenum disulphide are available for bearing materials with appropriately low friction and improved wear. Nylon 6 is used in applications where toughness, lubricity, and wear are important, such as gear wheels.

Nylon 6/6 is the extrusion grade of the Nylon family of solid polymer shapes. It has been commercially available since 1948; developed by Dupont. Nylon is well known for excellent toughness, low coefficient of friction and good abrasion resistance making it an ideal replacement for a wide variety of materials from metal to rubber. Using Nylon 6/6 reduces lubrication requirements, eliminates galling, and corrosion. Low cost combined with improved wear resistance makes Nylon 6/6 an excellent choice for many bearing and wear components.
Nylon 6/6 is easily fabricated into precision parts using standard metalworking equipment. Tolerances of +/-.002 are easily achieved with experience.  It is available in a broad variety of shapes and sizes. Rod stock normally comes ground to size making turning easier. Both extruded and cast grades of nylon are available with a variety of fillers to meet specific application demands.
Several manufacturers offer varying grades and filled versions thereof by the names of Tecamid® and Nylatron® , commercially available to accommodate specific applications. Solid lubricants such as mineral oil, , graphite, PTFE, and MoS2 provide lower friction, while reinforcing agent such as carbon fiber, Kevlar®, and glass provide higher levels of strength and dimensional stability.
