- the ` nvme_core .default_ps_max_latency_us=0` boot parameter . The latter will disable the APSTE feature . This seems useless anyway . . . with time, or randomly . . . it crashes . Since the SSD does not survive a suspend-to-ram, I also tried the param `acpiphp .disable=1`, but with no avail .
Adding as a kernel parameter nvme_core .default_ps_max_latency_us=1000 works either on Ubuntu 18 .04 .3 and Ubuntu 19 .10 . Pay attention at the reboot: You need to add this string into /etc/ default /grub and then update-grub .
It seems the problem happened to many, and mostly on Samsung NVMe drives . Following the advice on these pages, I installed Ubuntu (18 .04 .3, kernel 5 .0 .0 .19) adding the option nvme_core .default_ps_max_latency_us=0 to the Grub Linux launch command → was fine . Then rebooted, adding the same option to the command → fine . And confirmed APST was disabled
To properly disable APST such that the kernel will not be re-enabling it, you need to use the kernel parameter nvme_core .default_ps_max_latency_us=0 . Now it does seem suspicious that your device is returning the wrong value immediately; the kernel's own settings don't typically take effect without some event triggering it to rescan your device .

Makes sense - although it would be better to recommend setting nvme_core .default_ps_max_latency_us=5500 as the OP on that stackoverflow thread reported that this was enough to fix the problem . That still allows idle power consumption to be 0 .07W instead of 3 .10W, so it would be a pity if people unecessarily disabled that state .

If the total latency of any state (enlat + xlat) is greater than 25000 (25ms) you must pass a value at least that high as parameter default_ps_max_latency_us for the nvme_core kernel module . This should enable APST and make the table in nvme get-feature (as the root user) show the entries . Troubleshooting Controller failure due to broken APST support
