Becoming a Nurse at nearly 50 years old
I had always wanted to be a nurse, but I wasn’t sure I could pass the science requirements needed to complete my goal. I had a Bachelor’s Degree in English and had worked in the legal profession running a law practice. During my 45th year, I decided, with the support of my husband and children, to pursue my dream. I started taking the pre-requisite science classes that I had avoided while getting my BA. When I passed the required classes to get into nursing school, I applied to several nursing schools and was accepted in a two year RN associate degree program at a community college. I was thrilled but concerned that I was too old to become a nurse. The Dean assured me I wasn’t and I started my first semester. I was the oldest student in my class, but was accepted by my co-students and the nursing faculty as a viable nurse candidate who had much to offer my chosen profession.
I have three children and at the time I started nursing school my two eldest were in college and my youngest was a junior in high school. My school schedule was challenging with classes and six hour clinicals at various medical facilities needed to complete the scholastic and clinical requirements. I graduated and passed the board when I was 48 years old. I had pursued my professional dream and accomplished my goal to become a nurse. I was hired as an Oncology Nurse at a large city hospital in Chicago and started my profession as an oncology nurse.
From this experience I learned that you shouldn’t think you are too old to get an education in the field of your choice. With hard work and determination most people will accomplish their goals. I was lucky that my family supported my choice and with their encouragement and faith in me, I was able to reach my goal even though I was nearly fifty years old. You are never too old to become a nurse.
