TikTok, the App Super Popular With Kids, Has a Nudes Problem
TikTok is seen as being child-friendly. But a section of the social media platform is dedicated to hunting for nude images from its underage users.
ORIGINAL REPORTING ON EVERYTHING THAT MATTERS IN YOUR INBOX.
TikTok is one of the most popular iOS apps in the world right now. Hundreds of millions of users, many of them teenagers or children in the United States, use it to upload and browse lip sync videos and memes. Tiktok has repeatedly been held up as a space somehow free from the vitriol and danger of other social media networks. This week, the New York Times described it as “the only good app,” it was named as one of the Google Play Store’s most “fun” apps , and the Verge recently called it “joyful.”
But Motherboard has found a vibrant community of users on TikTok who appear to be soliciting explicit images of boys and girls, and some young users have complained on the platform about other people repeatedly asking them for nudes.
“(guy) looking for vids and nudes, and add me to groups I share vids,” the bio of one TikTok user found by Motherboard reads.
Chinese-made TikTok lets users record a video of themselves lip syncing along to music or movies. The app itself works in a similar way to Instagram, or the late Vine, with a timeline that users flick through, a search function, and a list of popular hashtags that users can follow.
In some videos posted to the platform and seen by Motherboard, users who appear to be children mention that people continually ask them for nude images. The creator of one of those videos imply they are 13 years old.
In a statement, a TikTok spokesperson told Motherboard “such behavior is not only abhorrent, it is prohibited on TikTok. We have a number of measures in place today to protect against misuse. TikTok doesn't permit images or videos to be sent in comments or messages, and users can make their account private, block another user, report an account or content, and disable the ability to receive messages. In addition, our moderation team removes inappropriate content and terminates accounts that violate our Terms of Service and Community Guidelines .”

While there is no content on a number of hashtags that have been associated with nude trading and images of trading on other social media platforms, suggesting TikTok may be curbing their use, the company has failed to moderate others. One of those, ‘#tradefortrade’, led to a profile with a male stroking themselves suggestively. A comment on that post led to another profile, which appears to be focused primarily on trading nude images, judging by its username. One of that user’s videos asks for nudes, and also includes audio of what appears to be someone masturbating. In turn, the accounts this user follows reveals a larger community of accounts centred around sharing nude images.
“Girl trade pics (boy or girl) dm me 🍆 💦” the bio of one profile reads.
Because TikTok does not allow users to send videos or images via direct messaging, so people soliciting nudes will likely move onto another app after making contact.
“If you have a 🍆 trade with me on snap chat dm me and i go live everyday,” the bio of another account named “lets trade boys” reads.
These accounts are not isolated. Some have hundreds of fans, TikTok’s equivalent of followers. Some of the accounts that explicitly ask for nude images also follow a slew of normal accounts that appear to be run by young children or teenagers.
It is not possible to tell if this accounts are run by underage users or adults. Other usernames imply the users could be of a young age, such as “16tradehmu,” but Motherboard was unable to confirm this—it could be someone pretending to be younger in order to solicit images. Because of the possibility that some of these people could be sharing illegal images of child pornography with other users, Motherboard did not engage these users.
Technically, TikTok does not allow people under 13 years of age to use its platform, according to the company’s Terms of Service , but many users in videos are clearly younger.
TikTok was previously known as Music.ly . In June of last year, a Frenso man was charged with sexual exploitation of children through Music.ly and a number of other apps.
Motherboard also found examples of doxing and harassment of high profile users who use the platform.
Recently ByteDance, the company that owns TikTok, said it would increase the number of its content moderators to 10,000, from 6,000.

Many parents have asked: Is there a dirty version of TikTok?
Yes there are dirty versions of Tiktok including asstok which stands as an adult alternative for nude Tiktok version for. And while simple parental controls can keep the family safe from x rated Tiktok clones, parents should be warned that there could be sexualized content on any of the social networking apps listed above. Take it from us, and take a full digital detox when you check into a log cabin.
The last thing that should be on your mind when checking into a log cabin is technology. But with adults, and kids, glued to their smartphones , it’s easier said than done.
While there’s not denying that technology, smartphones, and apps are addictive, having a digital detox can be one of the most liberating things possible.
Ideally, when you stay, you can turn all smartphones and devices off and truly connect with nature. If a full digital detox is not possible, then setting a screen time limit can be extremely helpful for the whole family.
The most toxic social media apps include Facebook, Instagram , Snapchat, and TikTok. Getting away from this digital social world, and connecting with friends and family in real life is what log cabins are all about.

TikTok's mission is to inspire creativity and bring joy. We are building a global community where people can create and share, discover the world around them, and connect with others across the world. We are committed to maintaining a supportive environment for our growing community. Our Community Guidelines establish a set of norms and common code of conduct that provide for a safe and welcoming space for everyone.
At TikTok, we prioritize safety, diversity, inclusion, and authenticity. We encourage creators to celebrate what makes them unique and viewers to engage with what inspires them; we believe that a safe environment helps everyone do so openly. We prize the global nature of our community and strive to take into account the breadth of cultural norms where we operate. We also aim to cultivate an environment for genuine interactions by encouraging authentic content on TikTok.
Our Community Guidelines apply to everyone and everything on TikTok. We proactively enforce them using a mix of technology and human moderation and aim to do so before people report potentially violative content to us. We also encourage our community members to use the tools we provide on TikTok to report any content or account they believe violates our Community Guidelines.
We will remove any content – including video, audio, livestream, images, comments, links, or other text – that violates our Community Guidelines. Individuals are notified of our decisions and can appeal them if they believe no violation has occurred. We will temporarily or permanently ban accounts and/or users that are involved in severe or repeated on-platform violations; we may also consider actions on other platforms and offline behavior in these decisions. Circumstances that involve any instance of a threat of real-world harm to human life that is specific, credible, and imminent may be reported to law enforcement authorities. The full TikTok experience is for people 13 and older, and we actively remove accounts of people we suspect are under this age. ( In the US, we accommodate people under 13 in TikTok for Younger Users, a limited app experience designed specifically for this audience with additional safeguards and privacy protections. )
Our algorithms are designed with trust and safety in mind. For some content, we may reduce discoverability, including by redirecting search results, or making videos ineligible for recommendation in the For You feed. More information can be found below in the Ineligible for the For You feed section.
At the same time, we recognize that some content that would normally be removed per our Community Guidelines may be in the public interest. Therefore, we may allow exceptions under certain limited circumstances, such as educational, documentary, scientific, artistic, or satirical content, content in fictional or professional settings, counterspeech, or content that otherwise enables individual expression on topics of social importance. To minimize the potentially negative impact of graphic content, we may first include safety measures such as an “opt-in” screen or warning.
In consultation with relevant stakeholders, we update our Community Guidelines from time to time to evolve alongside new behaviors and risks, as part of our commitment to keeping TikTok a safe place for creativity and joy.
We are deeply committed to protecting the safety of minors on our platform. TikTok defines a minor as any person under the age of 18. We prohibit activities that perpetuate the abuse, harm, endangerment, or exploitation of minors on TikTok. Any content, including animation or digitally created or manipulated media, that depicts abuse, exploitation, or endangerment of minors is a violation on our platform and will be removed when detected. We report child sexual abuse material (CSAM) and supporting evidence to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) and to any additional relevant legal authorities.
Our users must meet the minimum age requirements to use TikTok, as stipulated in our Terms of Service . When an underage account is identified, we remove it. Given our platform is designed with the safety of minors in mind, some of our features are age restricted. Account holders who are under the age of 16 cannot use direct messaging or host a livestream and their content is not eligible to appear in the For You feed (the age thresholds may be higher in some regions) . Account holders who are under the age of 18 cannot send or receive gifts via our virtual gifting features.
TikTok will take action on any content or accounts involving CSAM or sexual exploitation of a minor. Sexual exploitation of minors includes any abuse of a position of power or trust for sexual purposes, including profiting financially, socially, sexually, or politically from the exploitation of a minor. CSAM is defined as any visual depiction of sexually explicit nudity or conduct of a minor, whether captured by predatory adults, peers, or self-generated by minors.

However, we do support members of our community sharing their personal experiences with these issues in a safe way to raise awareness and find community support. We also remove content that depicts attempted suicide or behavior likely to lead to self-inflicted death.
