Hey there, time traveller!
This article was published 19/08/2017 (1844 days ago), so information in it may no longer be current.

Dear Miss Lonelyhearts: My husband and I have been nudists for 26 years, and raised our son in a nudist home. As dedicated nudists we have always gone completely naked everywhere around our home all the time, except when our son has friends over.

Our son is now 21 and has had a girlfriend for just over six months who is not aware we are nudists. Now she is staying over two-to-three nights a week and we are still having to get dressed for her visits. She is shy.

Also, with our son, we don’t want to cause any issues that may result in him moving out before being able to save up enough money to afford a home.

We have talked to some nudist friends of ours who suggested a few things, since broaching the subject with her does not seem to be an option. The most common suggestion was getting accidentally caught naked by her. Be it getting up in the middle of the night to pee and going naked to the bathroom (she sometimes gets up at night to pee, too, so either of us might run into each other), or getting ready for work in the morning by going to and from the bathroom naked, making and eating breakfast naked or by us staying naked when she comes over alone while our son is at work.

When she uses her key we’ll pretend not to have heard the door when we run into her. We would be very casual about it when caught naked, and then hope to be able to talk to her about it and give her the option to go naked around the house, too. Our son would probably love being greeted by his naked girlfriend at the door when he got home that first time.

Other suggestions have been to leave a nudist magazine out for her to see, and see if she says anything to us, and if not, then bring it up. Another was to have some nudist magazines in with some other things such as photos, year books, etc. and then she can accidentally come across it when going through the albums, and then we can talk about it.

They all seem like good ideas, but most of our friends favour the accidental nudity since it is what has worked for some of them. We realize we may have let this go on too long (our mistake) but again, we didn’t want our lifestyle to be an issue in their developing relationship, which is now very strong.

Could you please offer up your thoughts or any other suggestions? All the best. — M and G, Winnipeg

Dear M and G: Moving out would be an all-round good idea for a man who is now in his 20s. Then everybody gets privacy and freedom and the son gets to grow up. The young woman wouldn’t be pressured to accept a nudist lifestyle with her boyfriend’s parents, if she wasn’t big on it.

You say you don’t want your 21-year-old son to move out until he can afford a home — these days, that could mean age 30. That’s not healthy for your son’s development. Encourage him to fly. And here’s the good part for you: once he moves out, you can be nude full-time at home again.

Accidentally running into nude parents anywhere in the house is not a cool idea. The magazines on the coffee table are slightly a better move.

Why not encourage your son to be open and honest about it? He needs to be the one to tell his girlfriend in private that your family usually lives a nudist lifestyle at home, especially now she’s staying over several nights a week.

I grew up in the country, but one I summer I was living in the city for theatre school, I had a city boyfriend who took me home (I was 16) when no one was there. I spotted a shadowy picture on the wall and said asked who the naked people in the picture were. He said, “My mom and dad, they’re nudists.” And, I concluded fairly quickly, so was he. But I wasn’t into it, and he didn’t push it.

Dear Miss Lonelyhearts: Far away, in a country I barely remember, live my grandparents. They don’t like to travel anymore. We moved and haven’t gone back there as a family for eight years, because my parents say it is expensive to fly all that way for three of us.

My mother, who is Canadian, is afraid I will go there, fall in love, and want to stay and live there, and never come back. She married a dark-eyed man from there and says they’re the best-looking men in the world — dangerously handsome.

It’s true my father looks like a movie star. She wants me to stay home in Winnipeg where it’s safer. That makes me want to go all the more. I am saving my money to go anyway, when I’m 18. I would prefer to go with my mom’s permission. How can I get it? — Clueless on This, Manitoba

Dear Clueless on This: Save your money and start working on a family trip idea where your mom is actively encouraged by you to go (and keep her eye on you).

Tell your dad you want the three of you to go, and to help in this project financially. See if you can get a part-time job at a fast-food place where they hire teens.

Once you have enough money for your own ticket and some spending money, start putting away regular savings towards your mother’s ticket, too.

Something tells me there’s another reason why your mother doesn’t want to go on these trips to the old country. Could it be a problem with the grandparents, stemming from luring their son away to another country? Do they not get along or speak the same language?

You need to get at the truth about any hidden issues.

When I was in HS some of the boys in my HS swim team, and I used to sneak in late at night into the pool at school to go swimming. Since we didn't have our swimsuits with us, we swam naked. We never got caught.

WOW.......it's nice to hear that erections are not an issue for many of you.

I am a home nudist. I am almost always naked at home. I share this house with my mother, who took up nudism a couple of years after I did. Shortly after I took up nudism, the inevitable happened. I was 20 and in college, living at home. To get to my 1st-morning class on time, I had to get up at 6 AM and be out by 7 AM to catch the bus.

As with many men, I wake up with a morning woodie. I overslept and woke up late. I rushed out of my room to the bathroom to wash up. When I stepped out of my room, I saw mom coming down the hall towards my room to wake me up. We both stopped dead in our tracks. I was naked and sporting an erection, and Mom was wide-eyed, staring at me. She was first to recover. She quickly turned around, heading back to the kitchen while at the same time telling me to hurry up or I would be late and miss my bus.

I cleaned up, got dressed, and then wolfed down my breakfast before rushing out to catch my bus. Mom did not mention the incident, and neither did I.

A few weeks later, the same thing happened, but moms' reaction was different this time. This time she smiled and said, "Ahh, I see you're already up." and laughed as she turned to go back to the kitchen.

Later that day, I tried to apologize to mom. But she cut me off before I could finish. She said she understood that boys/men often wake up with an erection, and she wasn't surprised that I did because my dad always woke up with one. She said she didn't have any issues with it as long as I wasn't playing with it in front of her.

To this day, my erections have not been an issue. I am not a walking erection at home, but if she sees me with an erection, I do not have to worry about it upsetting her.

Has anyone else ventured into full time nude living? I've been clothes free for 3 months now and it's been utterly fantastic and I am eager to make this last as long as I can. Thanks to the pandemic I transitioned to working from home and I have made arrangements with the local food come farm shop, cafe, hardware shop and a pub.

No, and I'm not sure I would have wanted to. It would mean I couldn't go anywhere, no matter where I lived (almost). That is, I'd have to avoid being seen except by a select few, or so I would assume. Besides, it would require better weather than where I live now, presumably, unless I was willing to stay indoors if it wasn't above, say, 60 degrees. I say, 'would have,' because I live in an ordinary suburban neighborhood where I'd have to stay indoors all the time.

All of that notwithstanding, it is nice to live nude as much as possible, which I was able to do for a while, a long time ago, and, yes, it was all indoors. But there are people who live in nudist clubs year-round, so that would be a close possibility.

I have been living nude since I was 20. It's how I like to dress when I am at home. I work and shop, and of course, I am dressed for that.
When the lockdowns came, I was naked 24/7 except for those few short runs for groceries.
I still enjoy long hours of nudity, including going for drives, going to the beach, going to friends, etc.
I wish there were more public nudist venues.

I live nude as much as possible. Indoors mostly. I do have an active life, going shopping, to the pub, church, volunteering. So I am not nude 100% of the time. Inside my home is a different matter. Dressed when appropriate, nude when appropriate.

I was the only nudist at home. It was my uncle that taught me nudism, so I got to get nude as much as possible. My parents never really understood why I like to prefer to get naked.

I am not a total prude, but I've always possessed a degree of awkwardness about nudity. I can change into swimmers in a communal changing room, but I'll do it as fast as I can with my eyes fixed to the floor.
So when I read that naturists have higher self-esteem than those who keep their clothes on, I decided to spend a week in the nude in the privacy of my own home to see what I could learn. I hoped that my naked experiment would make me more comfortable with my body and its imperfections.
I absolutely gained was a sense of "knowing" about my body. Credit: Stocksy
I worked, slept, cooked, cleaned, and got on with family life minus my clothes. Although I was a little apprehensive about my nudity project, on the whole I really enjoyed it.
There were low points. On one of Sydney's excruciatingly hot days, sweat pooled under my unsupported breasts and my thighs stuck to my synthetic office chair. I was extremely uncomfortable and desperate to cover up. On other days, though, my nudity was liberating and fun. There were even a few moments where I felt profoundly present in my body.
Then, one rainy afternoon, I ran into the backyard to rescue some laundry on the washing line. I'd forgotten I was nude, but the feeling of big bulbous raindrops on my skin was heavenly. It was something I hadn't experienced since childhood, and so joyful that I even sashayed around doing a bit of a dance before dashing back into the house with the laundry basket.
Apart from one accidental FaceTime incident (sorry, Jo!), the only people who saw me naked were my husband, who was amused but had no complaints, and my young daughters, who enjoyed poking my "squishy" tummy. By the end of the week, my nudity seemed to be business as usual.
Did it make me more comfortable with my body? Perhaps.
But what I absolutely gained was a sense of "knowing" about my body, as if I had rekindled a childhood friendship, or come home after a long and arduous journey.
There are legitimate reasons why nudity is good for you. As mentioned, University of London researchers discovered that naturists who took part in an online survey have higher self-esteem than their fully clothed peers. They also had better body image and were happier in general. Although the vast majority of survey participants were men, the positive body image effects extended for women, too.
After spending a week naked at home, the prospect of stripping off in public became less daunting. In fact, when I misunderstood an email about this article and thought that my editor was asking me to go to a nudist beach, I didn't completely baulk at the idea.
So, do naturists agree that being naked in public is an important part of the self-esteem equation?
Jenni Parry, 48, has been a naturist for five years. "People are judged by what they wear; the brand and labels of their clothes," she says. "And the fit: is it too tight, too baggy, hanging too low, showing arse crack, too much cleavage – the list goes on. Without clothes, you are accepted as you are." Parry tells me that naturism has released her from "a vicelike grip" of society's expectations of how she should look.
"Once you are comfortable in your own skin, you own your spot in the world," she says. "And man, do I own that spot! Yes, I'm human, so I have moments [of self-critique]. But they are less often and easier to come out of."
Psychologist Dr Samantha Clarke says that many of us view ourselves though a very critical lens: "We don't look at our body as a whole, we focus on the bits we don't like."
Spending time nude can help us perceive our body as a whole, she explains. "Getting comfortable with your body, and being aware of all the amazing things it does, can really help you embrace its assets.
"Your body isn't who you are," says Clarke. "It's just a vehicle that allows you to move around the world."
