Nudity on television is still a rarity (especially male nudity ), but there are certain shows that push the boundaries — and then some. Behold, the most surprising and talked-about naked moments and shows in TV history.
Alexander Skarsgård filmed a full-frontal scene for Big Little Lies , and um ... the Internet was *extremely* impressed with what they saw — not to mention desperate to know if what they saw was, in fact, real.
Naturally, this prompted The Wrap to do some investigative reporting, so they reached out to HBO and confirmed that yes: Alexander's big moment was courtesy of an equally big prosthetic.
The brutal moment in Game of Thrones where Cersei was forced to walk the streets naked was one of the most painful and memorable scenes in a very nudity-packed show, but Lena Headey opted to use a body double.
"Some people thought I was less of an actress because I didn't get my tits out," she told EW . "You know what? It was really a bit shocking. I've done nudity. I'm not averse to it. But I know I'm a very emotional actor and I get really driven by that. In order to do my job, I allow myself to be really vulnerable. I don't know any other way to do my job. Things really affect me. And the thought of being naked for three days and trying to contain her in the way she would be I think I would feel very angry. I didn't want to be angry. I don't think Cersei would be angry. I did what I thought she would do, emotionally."
Anyone else's jaw hit the floor when Maeve told Lee Sizemore to take off his clothes during the season two premiere of Westworld, and all of a sudden he was standing there completely naked ?
"It's not often that we see a man naked," actor Simon Quarterman told Vulture of the scene. "It's a rare thing. Women have to reveal a lot all the time, and it felt so in keeping with what we were doing with the themes and with the tables being turned. And obviously, doing it with Thandie, who spent most of the season last year naked. I found it incredibly powerful, actually. When we were shooting, I was very clear to the team that they could shoot it however they wanted to. I thought it was important for that scene to happen."
Penny Dreadful has plenty of male and female nudity, but one particularly memorable scene involved Jonny Beauchamp's character getting completely naked in the brothel — which was a huge moment for the man of the hour.
"Nudity was my one big fear as an actor, the one thing I never really thought I would be able to do," Jonny told TV Insider . "In the theater, it's a little different. But to go full frontal for my first big TV project was daunting. I'd be lying if I said I didn't lose sleep over it."
Outlander's Tobias Menzies didn't bother with a modesty pouch while filming a scene in which his extremely evil character attempts to rape a woman. Why? Because he thought going au naturel made the moment more realistic.
"We're all old and hairy enough now; we all know what it is!" the actor told Vulture of baring all. "I didn't bother with a modesty pouch, because that's what the scene is about — is he up or not? And if nudity is necessary within the narrative, then I don't have a problem with it."
Lena Dunham spends a big chunk of Girls naked, but one of her most memorable scenes came in season two, when Hannah spends the day having sex with a patron of the coffee shop she works at and playing a game of ping pong in the buff.
"Part of getting older for me has actually been feeling more modest," Lena once told Refinery29 . "Unfortunately, Hannah Horvath doesn't always allow for that."
A lot of people got naked on Vinyl , including Olivia Wilde — and you better believe she wore a mirkin (a.k.a. a wig for her pubic hair). After all, this show takes place in the 70s!
"I was so vocal about it being fake because I was horrified that background actors might think this is my real body hair," she said on Late Night with Seth Meyers . "So I walked around like, 'Whoa, check this fake merkin out, everyone! It's not real.'"
Oh, hello! Thought we were done talking about Alexander Skarsgård's penis? Think again. He also showed off the goods during True Blood 's season six finale, when his character Eric lounged fully naked in the sun only to start burning.
And this time Alexander's penis was 100% the real deal: "Obviously, if it's a love scene with an actress, I'll wear [a sock], absolutely," he told Vulture of filming the viral moment. "But that scene was just me on a rooftop in Hollywood — that's where we shot it, with a green screen. And it was a very hot day, so I didn't need the sock."
In the unlikely event that you haven't caught an episode, Naked and Afraid follows two strangers who strip off all their clothes and get dumped in the middle of nowhere.
Obviously, the question on everyone's mind is who gets paid to blur out boobs, butts, and genitalia all day, right? And the answer is a team of six graphic artists, supervised by a person named Erin Gavin, who told The Hollywood Reporter : "It can be extremely tedious work, so we've seen people come and go from here. They just don't have it in them. We like to think the fake boobs are easier to pixelate because they don't move around as much."
And then there's Dating Naked , a show about people who — as you probably guessed — go on dates while naked. Like Naked and Afraid , there's a team of people in charge of censoring nudity — but one star famously sued VH1 thanks to a NSFW editing fail.
Christopher Eccleston got fully naked when his character was locked up in a pillory during The Leftovers — which shouldn't be that surprising considering that creator Damon Lindelof is extremely invested in evening the playing field between on-screen nudity for men and women.
"There's an incredible disproportion between naked women and naked men on television," he told TVLine . "And if you're going to do a show on HBO, which is one of the few places where you can do full frontal nudity, there's no excuse not to show more dongs. I'm passionate about it."
The scene in question happened after Helen (played by Maura Tierney) and Max (played by Josh Stamberg) have sex, and he stands up — exposing, well, everything , to the camera.
"I've done lots of sex scenes but I hadn't done a lot of that type of nudity," Josh told EW . "It's a weird day at work. It's choreographed like, your leg goes here and my arm goes there. But when you start going it's different. And then it's really awkward immediately after. Not with the other actor but with everyone else in the room who has been watching you do this. Suddenly the dude behind the monitor can’t look at you."
There are two live TV nudity moments on this list, and the first is obviously Justin Timberlake ripping off Janet Jackson's top during their Super Bowl performance, exposing her nipple in the process.
This will go down as one of the most talked-about naked moments in TV history — and FYI, Justin never gave Janet a public apology. He did however tell Zane Lowe , "I can't change what happened but I can move forward and learn from it."
The second live TV moment on our list comes courtesy of ye olde Oscars Streaker, who crashed the 1974 Academy Awards by running fully naked past actor David Niven as he was introducing Elizabeth Taylor. The streaker in question was named Robert Opal, and we can all agree that he's a total legend.
Rome has a ton of nudity in it, including a casual full-frontal from James Purefoy in which his character towels off in public. But the actor was completely chill about baring all for the camera, telling Digital Spy "It was like any other scene. I'm so used to it, it wasn't a big deal at all."
He also shut down speculation that his penis was digitally enhanced for the show, telling the Evening Standard : "That's absolutely hilarious! I won't say whose it was, but there was a penis in the series that may have been slightly enhanced. But it wasn't mine. Mine's all mine, I'm afraid. Believe me, I can look at the episode, and go, 'Yep, that's me.'"

True Detective Proves Boobs Still Have Power
Alexandria Daddario, True Detective , Winter 2014
Just when we thought that to break through the cable-TV noise you needed to flail some testicles with a cat-o'-nine-tails or watch someone's mom have sex, HBO proves all you need is a randy court stenographer, played by Alexandra Daddario, and the lack of a T-shirt.
Kris Jenner, America’s Most Naked Grandma, 2014
One can’t watch a simple reality-TV show about the children of formerly famous decathletes without seeing pilated breasts. Can nudity even have impact anymore? Have boobs finally jumped the shark? (Note to self: Is it possible to find a coffee mug with a picture of boobs jumping a shark?) Is it over? Yeah, probably not.
Pamela Anderson, Sideboob Pioneer, Baywatch , September 1992
There was a time, before the Internet showed Paris Hilton’s sideways red-carpet boob, when there was very little nakedness on TV. It was the era of sideboob, and it’s not over. We don't know who thought of it, but they should be richer than Pam Anderson by now.
Natalie Dormer Becomes the Most Disrobed Lady in History (of shows we admit to watching)
It's not just Game of Thrones, it's The Tudors ! And something from the BBC! And with any luck, season two of True Detective !
The Creative Nakedness of Game of Thrones
Perhaps no other show has done more than _GoT _to pioneer the imaginative wearing of less. Prime example: Cave-Bath Steamed Nipples (above). This is why nubile wildings exist.
David Cross bathing in Jorts on “Arrested Development”, 2003
Right now, you can turn on your television and see a naked woman doing basically anything a human is capable of doing—broadcasting the news, showering in prison. Sometimes these women even interact with men! And what are the men wearing when they join these casually nude women in bed, or in the shower, or in any old place? Pants. Or shirts. Or furs. Recall, for instance, the Game of Thrones scene where poor naked Rose Leslie's Ygritte stands, exposed, in front of Kit Harington's Jon Snow, who is sporting…a mammoth-sized animal pelt over pants, and probably a shirt and some armor. It's embarrassing, the way we are spared the sight of something we see every day. It's actually more awkward than the real thing. And if programmers won't go full frontal, we have "A Modest Proposal" (see above; David Cross in Arrested Development even bathed in jorts.)—Zach Baron

Surprise Nakedness, Part 3: MTV Movie Awards
Brüno (a.k.a. Sacha Baron Cohen, in full Victoria's Secret Angel regalia) straddles Eminem. He's super jazzed about it!
Dennis Franz's pioneering butt on NYPD Blue , Fall 1993
"I wanted to have adults in realistic sexual situation," says NYPD Blue co-creator Steven Bochco . Which meant more breasts and butts—male and female—than any network show at the time. There would be no Game of Thrones, if there was no NYPD Blue.
The First "Half-Giant" Prosthetic Penis
Kristian Nairn as Hodor, Game of Thrones , June 2011
We told you those Game of Throne guys were nakedness innovators.
Crime-Scene Naked (Let's Maybe Stop Doing It)
It's a great time to be a necrophiliac with a remote. SVU, CSI, The Fall, True Detective —nude female corpses seem to pop up everywhere. This season of Hannibal actually featured a naked-lady carcass with a bird inside her, both of them inside a dead horse's womb. What is that, a horseboobducken? Enough.
For a while naturalistic nudity was refreshing. _Hey, it's OK to look like a normal person! _isn't a bad message. But the onslaught of defenseless flesh (in this case, Louis C.K.'s) can start to resemble a depressing party platter of sandwich meat that's been left out too long. The ham is sweating and nobody ever wants the mortadella when there's so, so much of it.
And Just When You Thought TV Couldn't Get Nakeder
Reality-TV trends come in waves. Right now, we're disrobing. There's Discovery's Naked and Afraid, VH1's Dating Naked (pictured). And of course, WE tv's Sex Box. Yes, that's naked people having sex in a box.

Back in the day, you had to go to a video store, look in a private room behind some beaded curtains for a video, drive back home, and then use your VHS player to get nude scenes on television . Or, even worse, you had to call a number and pay over the phone each time you wanted to watch some onscreen nudity . But we've come a long way, baby, and now pretty much every channel and streaming service, barring basic cable, has their own way for a viewer to get their eyes on some boobs and some butts—shout-out to HBO and to Netflix, who paved the way. For your viewing pleasure, we've gathered the most naked shows on television that you can stream now. Happy watching!
Rome , which premiered in 2005, paved the way for gritty/sexy HBO drama series. Which means without its pioneering use of sexy people doing sexy things in period costumes, a show like Game of Thrones may never have existed.
With a title like Masters of Sex and a home on Showtime, it would honestly be more shocking if this series didn't have a ton of nude scenes. The series is set in the '50s and '60s and focuses on real-life, pioneering sex researchers Dr. William Masters and Virginia Johnson (played by Michael Sheen and Lizzy Caplan).
Speaking of sexy premises on premium cable, we have to give a shoutout to Starz's P-Valley , which follows employees at a strip club in Mississippi.
Amazon's Carnival Row is here to fill the "fantasy elements with lots of naked people" shaped void in your TV diet. The steampunk-set series takes place in an alternate reality where faeries, fauns, and other magical creatures exist alongside humans (and get busy with them).
This ITV classic 'Secret Diary of a Call Girl' follows a high-end call girl (played by Doctor Who alum Billie Piper) who relays the often-hilarious tales of the trade—think British Sex and the City with a prostitute.
If it's on HBO, you can bet there are going to be naked people. True Detective has had some notable nude moments, like when Alexandra Daddario bared all in Season 1.
If you've always wondered what would happen if you took Game of Thrones and the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise and put them in a blender, then start binging Black Sails . The Starz series is set during the "Golden Age" of piracy and features, you guessed it, plenty of ARRRGH-rated moments (won't apologize for puns, ever).
This short-lived HBO series about the record industry boasted an A-list cast with the likes of Olivia Wilde and Juno Temple, as well as some of the rawest, most real moments of TV nudity ever to hit the airwaves.
Spartacus: Blood and Sand is the first season of Starz's Spartacus series, which follows a gladiator in ancient Rome. Period costumes, action, drama, lots of sexy times and nudity—this is literally the perfect fix if you're ever feeling Game of Thrones withdrawal.
If HBO dramas and gratuitous nudity are synonymous at this point, True Blood deserves a lot of the credit. The vampire-fueled, paranormal romance made Game of Thrones look tame when it comes to nudity. Seriously.
HBO's gritty teen drama Euphoria (opens in new tab) is all about the darkest side of teenage life, and it dives headfirst into heavy issues like drug use and sex in honest and real ways. So, yes, nudity is a given.
When a show's title is literally a play on the word "fornication," you should know going in that you're in for a lot of sex and, by ex
