Nude shots of 'Calendar Girls' cast spark interest in play

Six actresses in the cast of "Calendar Girls" got to know each other in a hurry when they posed nude together for their own benefit calendar, which will be sold at performances through Sept. 24 at Clear Creek Community Theatre.
"First, we enjoyed a few glasses of bubbly, and it was a really lovely experience, bonding together," said Angela Reader of League City, a native of Yorkshire, England, where the play is set.
Also baring "all" for Pearland photographer Mike Fox were League City castmate Jean Ciampi, who plays Celia; Brandee Sibley (Cora) of Seabrook; Julie Owen (Jessie) of Clear Lake; Caroline McDonald of San Leon (Annie); and Connie Musler (Ruth) of Houston.
Ciampi, who "instigated" the project, hosted the photo shoot at her home, and gathered up props to hide private body parts.
The props included flowers, a basket of bread buns, a guitar and a jar of jam.
The 15-month calendar will be for sale at the theater, with half of the proceeds benefitting The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, which funds blood cancer research, education and patient services.

Actual events in Yorkshire inspired the story for the play by Tim Firth and a 2003 movie that starred Helen Mirren.
"It's the true story of a group of middle-aged British women who stripped off for a calendar to raise money when one of their husbands died of cancer," said Reader, who has lived in League City for nine years.
"It's been a lot of fun using my own accent in rehearsals and coaching the cast on correct pronunciations," said Reader, who serves as vice president on the CCCT's board of directors.
"Calendar Girls" opens the group's 53rd season.
"Some skeptics thought the play may not be known well enough to draw the crowds," Reader said.
However, some of that doubt was eased after the CCCT calendar's cover shot was posted on Facebook in August.
"Suddenly, there's a lot of buzz around this show and tickets are already selling fast," Reader said.
Dozens of people "liked" the post, then hundreds, as fans replied to the post with enthusiastic comments.
Mike Geiger, a veteran of many Bay Area productions, asked, "Who did the costumes for this show?"
"Mother Nature, Mike," replied Owen.
"This just in: Straight men show sudden interest in theater," cracked Steve Walker, who played the sheriff in a production of "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas" earlier this year at Pearl Theater.
For that show's publicity, Walker posed for Mike Fox Photography as if naked in an old-fashioned bath tub, surrounded by Chicken Ranch workers in lingerie.
"Oddly enough, the (prostitutes) wore more clothes than the 'Calendar' ladies," said Fox, a software writer who launched his side business as a photographer about nine years ago.
His wife, Angi Fox, and their daughter, Tabitha, 19, assisted Fox in shooting the photo spread for the calendar.
"They put us at ease by being very respectful," Reader said.
"They would set up each shot with us fully clothed, then we would disrobe and they would make adjustments with our props before the photographer came in."
Reader said that her husband, Mark, approves of her foray into modeling.
"He is really proud of me," she said.
"He thinks that all of us ladies are incredibly brave."
