Gary Frey wore just a red baseball cap and bright, white tennis shoes as he rolled a cylinder of wood across the board in hopes of knocking down the 12 pins set up on the other end.
He threw the cylinder high and it soared over the pins as the sun beat down on Frey’s 77-year-old naked body.
His skin was a dark brown from the rays and his arms bounced as he shook his fists in playful frustration at the missed shot.
Undeterred, Frey said the all-nude competition was all in good fun and part of an escape from his life as a retired autoworker and amateur astronomer.
“This gets you out of the rat race,” Frey said. “If you win, you win. If you lose, you lose. It’s just like, ‘Here we are.’ Everybody’s got the same parts. They might look a little different, but it’s all the same.”
Behind Frey, about six other men laughed, each waiting their turn to play a round of molkky, a Finnish game that was included this year in Saturday's Nude Games at Shangri La Ranch. The New River clothing-optional resort hosted the games as part of the annual Nude Recreation Week, sponsored by the American Association of Nude Recreation, which has seven regions across the country.
The games also included swimming-pool volleyball and cornhole, but Frey said the weekend was really about the communal nature of the more than 50-year-old resort, and the freedom of nudity. He said the games can help initiate new, more nervous members into enjoying the resort's dress code — or lack thereof.
“It’s a real freedomy feeling,” Frey said. “The people are really friendly. You don’t have the stigmatism of the way people dress. It’s a little challenging at first. You do this around the house and you wonder, ‘Do I really want to do this outside?’
“Once you get accustomed to being naked outside, when you have to put clothes on, you feel very confined.”
Frey said he first visited the resort in 2015 at its annual auto show and he said he left with a sense of belonging and community.
He said he’s been spending time around his house and working in his auto garage nude for years, but it was when he met other nudists at a public resort that he truly found what he was missing.
“Being naked, you don’t have any problems,” Frey said. “You’re born naked, and you’re going to die naked.”
But few are actually raised naked. Cyndi Faber grew up on Shangri La Ranch with her sister Danielle. Their parents operate the ranch and camp that sees about 100 visitors per weekend.
Faber, 24, joined in with the men, happily stripping off a tank top and jean shorts to show Frey and the other men how the game she discovered at a nudist resort near Battle Creek, Michigan was played.
“It’s all about fun social events,” Faber said of the week's activities. “There’s no barriers. When you talk to someone, you’re actually talking to a person. There’s no clothing giving you a different impression. You get to know people on a deeper level.”
She said they are trying to appeal to more young adults, as well.
“(Nudism) appeals to everybody,” Faber said. “We try to appeal to young adults because there is no better time to get into it when you’re first finding your way. It’s always great to come out, shed your clothes and have fun. I’ve seen such diversity here.”
Diana Cratty, 68, spent her Nude Games in a swimming pool playing volleyball with a group of people. Without a second thought, each of the players set and spiked the ball, partially exposed in the clear, waist-deep water.
Cratty said she’s been a nudist her entire life and also raised her kids at a clothing-optional camp during summers in Massachusetts. She said the nude lifestyle even helped ease her transition through menopause, as her lack of clothes helps with the hot flashes.
She’s been a full-time resident at Shangri La since 1986.
“I hate clothes, for one thing. I’ve always hated clothes,” Cratty said. “It’s freedom, and you don’t sweat at all.”
Although Cratty’s children have grown up, and met spouses opposed to nudism, she said they gained a lot from living with her at the camp in Massachusetts. Cratty remembers the camp providing her children a strong perspective on nature and their bodies as they were able to explore the wildlife, clothed or not.
“It was great for them,” she said. “They could all tell you of their adventures. It’s really the sociability of the whole thing. They had free range. This is really no different than in town, except when it gets hot, you won’t see us wearing clothes.”
Patty Faber, Cyndi and Danielle's mother, has been a partner at the ranch since her grandfather bought it in 1996. She said attitudes toward nudists have relaxed in recent years, along with the gay and transsexual rights movements.
She said living as a nudist for so long has helped make her more accepting and tolerant of people from all walks of life.
“In the past 20 years, so many things have changed,” she said. “There is more tolerance for alternative lifestyles and recreational options. Here, we just enjoy being unbound by clothes. The doctor, the lawyer, the plumber are all sitting next to each other, and you wouldn’t know. It’s extremely empowering.”
Joni Stringer, 51,said she enjoys the resort. The native of Mobile, Alabama has worked in the Shangri La cafeteria since October 2015, and said the normalization of nudity strengthens the body image of residents and visitors alike. She has to wear clothes while serving food, but also takes naked dips in the pool during her off-time.
“At a beach, everyone would be staring,” Stringer said. “Here, everyone is more relaxed. It takes a while to get used to walking around naked, but once you do it becomes second nature. You can always tell who is new.”
