Bude is a small seaside resort town in north Cornwall, England, UK, and while the Victorians favoured it as a watering place, it became a popular seaside destination in the 20th century, and Bude has a maritime climate with cool summers and mild winters.
Like other coastal resorts around Cornwall, the sea around Bude can become violent and unpredictable and on the 10th of October in 1844, while carrying out a routine exercise, the unnamed Bude Lifeboat capsized when the steering oar broke followed by four on the port side, and two of the crew were drowned.
