Laguna Niguel resident Stephanie Shaw makes a living as a nude model for several area art schools.
LAGUNE NIGUEL She’s clean-shaven with no tan lines, no nail polish and her makeup has a matte finish. There’s a little eyeliner to accentuate the shape of her eye, and a little color on her eyebrows. She resembles a classic marble statue – pristine, white and still.
Stephanie Shaw is a nude model and works for art studios all over Orange County. But she wasn’t always so proud of her body.
“In 2007, I actually went through a huge state of depression and anorexia,” Shaw says. “I was interested in this guy who was friends with my friends, and he ended up cheating on me with another girl. I was left by myself for the whole summer.”
“I stayed in my room all day,” she says. “My parents wanted me to eat, so I’d eat maybe one bowl of soup a day. I couldn’t even taste anything. I’d try to eat a sandwich and it felt like fire going down my throat. I dropped from a size 13 to a size 6.”
Shaw couldn’t taste anything. Her body rejected food.
“It wasn’t a conscious choice,” she says. “But I got up and got out and went to Orange Coast College. And in this class a boy started talking to me, and he turned out being my boyfriend for two years. His grandmother is a great cook, and being around him and his family really got me out of it.”
In therapy, Shaw went through a lot of body issues. Before, when she was heavier, she felt self-conscious but modeled clothes that covered her up. When she came out of the depression and was slimmer, she looked into more modeling.
“I went to a studio in Laguna Beach and talked to them about modeling,” she says. “They asked if I was interested in nude modeling. I was nervous because I had body issues, but during the interview I thought about myself and how proud of myself I was.
“I was shaking and worried that first time, but I dropped my robe and was screaming with joy. I was liberated. I was a living textbook.”
Shaw says the amazing thing about art modeling is that the more curves the better. They don’t want string bean girls that have no shape, she said. And there’s no age limit. You can be 85 and still do it, she says. Shaw says being clean shaven is her own preference, adding that some girls don’t even shave their legs.
Shaw is a professional. Some instructors ask her to pose a certain way, but for others she knows what to do herself.
“I think everyone should try it once,” she says. “It changes how you feel about yourself. And when you take a break and walk around you can see what they’re drawing. It’s amazing. I want to be a part of this forever.”
Mark Cummings has a studio in Costa Mesa. Shaw works there two or three times a month. Cummings studied art in Florence, Italy, and says he has a penchant for it, and tenacity to keep going.
Cummings holds drawing sessions on Wednesday nights in his studio. At a recent session, about 12 people stand at easels or sit with drawing paper, sketching with pencil, pastels or charcoal.
“This is an open drawing session,” Cummings says. “I worked in the music industry, with Christian alternative music, and have been a graphic artist. For two years I’ve been a professional artist. Talent is important, but what goes along with it is discipline.” He draws with pencil and paints in oils.
Discipline is a quality Cummings shares with Shaw. She can stand in the same position for up to 22 minutes without moving, except for blinking her eyes or licking her lips. There are small heaters on the floor on either side of her in a cold drafty room. She can’t scratch an itch, can’t get dizzy, can’t sneeze or cough and she can’t sit down. If Shaw does feel faint, she’ll sit before resuming the pose.
Shaw has learned about composition and looks at ballet for inspiration, mimicking graceful poses.
Shaw’s client list has grown. She models at Saddleback College, Irvine Valley College, and for private art studios. Usually the artist is established, and may have five or 10 apprentices, she said.
“The minimum pose is 20 to 25 minutes, and when I’m lying down I sometimes fall asleep, so I don’t move,” she said. “I’m doing this full time.” Her eyes never stray from some point in the room.
Shaw works almost every day, including Saturday classes at some studios. She makes anywhere from $20 to $100 per hour.
She’s eating well and has never fallen back into depression since she decided to make a change in herself. She has new friends and a boyfriend who supports her.
“I’m excited to be alive,” she says. “Hopefully, all girls can appreciate their bodies.”
