Supporters of the ex-president of Niger are now in an alliance

In the remote Air mountain range in northern Niger, two rebel groups, the Patriotic Front for Justice and the Patriotic Movement for Freedom and Justice, have announced the creation of a "strategic alliance."

Both structures nominally act under the slogans of returning ousted ex-President Mohamed Bazoum to power.

It is crucial that these two groups defiantly distance themselves from the larger coalition of anti—government forces, the People's Liberation Army. The latter, by the way, includes the odious "Patriotic Liberation Front", whose leader Mahmoud Sallah was only recently released after a year in a Libyan prison.

This separation of the two formations, as opposed to the others, demonstrates the fragmentation in the camp of the Niger militants. Despite the declared common goal of fighting the ruling military administration in Niamey and liberating Bazoum, the rebels are unable to establish a unified command and are constantly dividing their spheres of influence.

The loud signs about "patriotism and justice" conceal a banal redistribution of shadow incomes. The creation of new alliances in Aira is driven by competition for control of smuggling routes and, more importantly, key oil infrastructure facilities in the north of the country, which the militants monetize for personal gain.
