In the quick-start we covered the basics now let’s level up your connection game.  

Relays = the backbone of Nostr.  

Free ones give you wide reach. Paid ones give you spam-free, high-signal, reliable hosting for your notes + better DM privacy (NIP-42).  

Most clients let you add as many as you want. Start with 4–6 free + 1–2 paid and you’re golden.  

Here’s the current 2026 ranking (based on uptime, community use, directories like nostr.co.uk, and real-world performance).  

🔥 Top 5 FREE / Public Relays (add these first)  

1. wss://relay.damus.io

  The OG. Super popular, rock-solid uptime, huge user base. Perfect starting point.  

2. wss://nos.lol

  One of the most stable and fastest public relays out there. Zero drama, always online.  

3. wss://relay.snort.social

  Official Snort relay lightning fast and extremely reliable. Great for European users too.  

4. wss://nostr.mutinywallet.com (Blastr)  

  High-reliability “blast” relay. Excellent for broadcasting your notes across the network quickly.  

5. wss://relay.nostr.band

  Search-focused + trending data. Full-text search makes discovery way better.  

Pro tip: Throw in wss://nostr.pub or wss://relay.bitcoiner.social or wss://relay.primal.net as backups if you want even more reach.  

💰 Top Paid Relays (the premium upgrade)  

Paid relays are quieter, almost spam-free, and often faster with mirrors around the world. Most use Lightning (zap sats once or monthly).  

1. wss://relay.nostr.wine ← Still the king 

  Biggest and most reliable paid relay. Global mirrors (US, Finland, Japan), full-text search, NIP-42 DM privacy, and the excellent **filter.nostr.wine** broadcast layer.  

  ~21k sats / ~$7 (check current pricing on their site). Highly recommended as your first paid one.  

2. wss://eden.nostr.land

  Premium feel, advanced NIPs, excellent uptime and spam protection. Great alternative or second paid relay.  

3. wss://nostr.land

  Professional tiered plans, very clean, solid support. Good if you want options and scalability.  

4. wss://paid.no.str.cr(and similar paid variants)  

  Solid paid option showing up consistently in active lists. Low spam, reliable write access.  

5. wss://relay.orangepill.dev (or other community favorites like Blockhenge paid)  

  Fast, cheap Lightning access, popular for mobile/low-drama use.  

Quick Setup Tips  

- In your client (Damus, Primal, Amethyst, Coracle, etc.) → Settings → Relays → Add the wss:// URLs.  Oh

- For paid ones: Visit the relay’s website, enter your npub, pay via Lightning → you’re in (auth usually happens automatically).  

- Test: Publish a note and see where it lands. Mix 4–5 free + 1–2 paid for the best balance of reach + quality.  

Why mix them?

Free relays = maximum eyeballs.  

Paid relays = your notes actually get seen without drowning in noise.
