At A1 level in Norwegian, proficiency typically involves grasping fundamental vocabulary and basic sentence structures to navigate simple everyday interactions. Learners at this stage should be capable of understanding and using common greetings, farewells, and polite expressions. They should be able to introduce themselves, provide basic personal information such as their name, age, and nationality, and inquire about the same from others. For instance, they should be able to say "Hei, jeg heter Anna. Jeg er 25 år gammel og jeg kommer fra Tyskland" (Hello, my name is Anna. I am 25 years old and I am from Germany) or ask "Hva heter du?" (What is your name?).

Additionally, at the A1 level, learners should be able to handle simple, everyday tasks such as ordering food in a restaurant, asking for directions, or making purchases at a store. For example, they should be able to say "Jeg vil gjerne ha en kopp kaffe, takk" (I would like a cup of coffee, please) or "Unnskyld, hvor er nærmeste apotek?" (Excuse me, where is the nearest pharmacy?). Furthermore, they should be able to understand and use basic numbers for telling time, asking about prices, or giving simple quantities.

Moreover, proficiency at the A1 level involves being able to understand and respond appropriately to basic social interactions, such as expressing gratitude, apologizing, or giving simple compliments. Learners should also be able to engage in basic small talk about familiar topics like weather, hobbies, or interests. For example, they should be able to say "Takk skal du ha" (Thank you) or "Beklager, jeg forstår ikke" (Sorry, I don't understand) in response to various situations.

Overall, at the A1 level, learners are establishing a foundation in the Norwegian language, focusing on essential vocabulary, basic grammar structures, and practical communication skills necessary for everyday life situations.
