The Process
The annual North London secondary school admissions process -- the system through which families in the N4, N8, N15, and N22 postcode areas navigate the combination of catchment areas, sibling priority, faith school criteria, and the specific academy oversubscription criteria that the diversity of secondary school types in the area produces -- is the administrative experience that determines which school a child attends and which determines much of what follows.
The Anxiety
The anxiety that the admissions process produces in North London families is not irrational. The difference between the schools whose catchment the family is within and the schools whose catchment the family is outside is the difference between schools whose Ofsted ratings and outcomes data differ substantially. The anxiety is the appropriate response to a situation of genuine consequence.
