How Victorian terraces are being retrofitted for energy efficiency

The Challenge

The North London housing stock is primarily Victorian and Edwardian terraces whose construction predates any insulation or energy efficiency requirement. Retrofitting requires: cavity wall insulation where the wall construction permits, loft insulation, double glazing replacement, and the specific challenge of heat pump installation in properties whose radiator systems were designed for the higher flow temperatures that gas boilers produce.

The Cost

The cost of a full retrofit of a typical North London Victorian terrace: approximately 20,000 to 40,000 pounds. The government grant programs cover a fraction of this cost for eligible households. The majority of North London homeowners face the full cost without substantial subsidy.
