Members of the North Korean national cheerleading squad — who have been featured gleefully rooting at the PyeongChang Winter Olympics — are systematically forced to have sex with high-ranking members of Kim Jong Un’s twisted regime, according to a disturbing report.
Behind the scenes, the troupe — dubbed the “Pleasure Squad” by insiders — are forced to perform sex acts on party leaders during their trip to the Olympics, a defector with knowledge of the sexual slavery told Bloomberg News.
“[The] troupe came here and performed with dances and songs, and it might seem like a fancy show on the outside [but] they also have to go to parties and provide sexual services,” said defector Lee So Yeon, a military musician who fled the country in 2008, during Kim Jong Un’s regime.
“They go to the central Politburo party’s events, and have to sleep with the people there, even if they don’t want it,” said Yeon, 42.
She added, “Those sorts of human-rights infringements take place, where women have to follow what they are told to do with their bodies.”
The perky and impeccably dressed cheerleaders are subject to an extreme vetting system based on their looks, family backgrounds and loyalty to the Workers’ Party, according to the outlet.
They are monitored 24 hours a day, even while they eat and use the restroom, according to the UK Metro .
Yeon’s account of the sexual slavery piggybacks on past reports in which female defectors from North Korea have described being “selected” to sexually service members of the political party.
In 2010, defector Mi-hyang said she was only 15 years old when soldiers in green uniforms stormed her classroom and chose her to become a sex slave for Kim Jong Il, the father of Kim Jong Un, according to Marie Claire magazine.
She was forbidden from seeing her family and forced to spend 10 years sexually pleasuring him, according to the report.
Lee Il-nam, a nephew of Kim Jong Un’s father, who defected in 1982, also detailed some of the “Pleasure Squad” parties in his book.
The parties, which were often held at the tyrant’s official home, included kinky games in which the women were forced to strip and shave their pubic hair, Lee Il-nam wrote in his book, “Kim Jong-il’s Royal Family.”
“The routine at the parties included eating, drinking and dancing, but usually ended with erotic games,” he wrote, according to News.com.au.
“A favorite was a game in which the losers had to take off clothes one by one. It was enforced, regardless of men or women. If they got heavily drunk, they also played a hair-shaving game. If men lost, part of their head hair was shaved, as if it was mown. For women, their pubic hair was shaved.”
Other parties would be devoted entirely to sex, he wrote.
When the cheerleaders “retire,” they’re often married off to elite guards and sometimes paid to keep quiet about the regime’s dirty secrets.

Prostitution in North Korea is illegal and is not visible to visitors. Allegedly, a collection of women called the kippumjo provided sexual entertainment to high-ranking officials until 2011. Meanwhile, some North Korean women who migrate to China become involved in prostitution.

Under Article 261 of the criminal law, prostitution is punishable by up to two years labour if engaged in "multiple times". [1] According to CIA analyst Helen-Louise Hunter, during the rule of Kim Il-sung , there was no organized prostitution , but some prostitution was still practiced discreetly near railroad stations and restaurants. [2] While defectors currently report widespread prostitution, this is not experienced by visitors to the country. [3]

The kippŭmjo is an alleged collection of groups of approximately 2,000 women and girls that was maintained by the head of state of North Korea for the purpose of providing pleasure, mostly of a sexual nature, and entertainment for high-ranking Workers' Party of Korea (WPK) officials and their families, as well as occasionally distinguished guests. Its prostitutes were known as manjokcho ( 만족조 "satisfaction team(s)") and were organised as a part of the kippŭmjo , who were drafted from among 14- to 20-year-old virgins , trained for about 20 months, and often "ordered to marry guards of [ Kim Jong-il ] or national heroes" when they are 25 years old. [4]
For a girl selected to serve in the kippŭmjo , it was impossible to refuse, even if she was the daughter of a party official. [4] Manjokcho were obliged to have sex with male high-ranking party officials. Their services were not available to most North Korean men. [4] Not all kippŭmjo worked as prostitutes; other kippŭmjo activities were massaging and half-naked singing and dancing. The kippŭmjo were disbanded shortly after Kim Jong-il's death in 2011 . [5]

North Korea is a source country for women and children who are subjected to sex trafficking. The United States Department of State Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons ranks North Korea as a ' Tier 3 ' country. [6]

Some North Korean women who migrate to China become prostitutes, either voluntarily or forcibly. According to the UN Commission of Inquiry on Human Rights, when the women are repatriated to North Korea, they are subjected to forced abortion and their mixed race children are subject to infanticide. WELCOME to the secret high-class sex parties for North Korea’s elite, where schoolgirls as young as 13 are allegedly forced into servitude for their leaders’ pleasure.
The girls are picked out at random by soldiers – sometimes from their own school classrooms. Their family and medical histories are closely examined, and routine check-ups are performed to ensure their virginity is intact.
Over the following decade, these girls are expected to service the small military circle of North Korea’s elite. They are known as the leader’s Pleasure Squad – or Gippeumjo .
These are the claims of various defectors who managed to escape North Korea over the past decade. Each one describes the mysterious group in similar terms - a bizarre secret world where girls are plucked out of society and trained as high-class adult entertainers.
The Pleasure Squad is made up of 2000 North Korean girls, and divided into three specialised groups - one for sexual services, one for giving massages, and one for live singing and dancing, which they can be made to do semi-nude.
Within the walls of North Korea, the practice is incredibly secretive, and knowledge of its existence comes solely from defectors who have fled to China or South Korea.
Even the families of girls in the Squad are not told where they are going - only that they are taking part in “important government projects”. From that moment on, the girls are not permitted to see or speak to their relatives.
Less than six months after his father’s death, the South Korean newspaper Chosun Ilbo reported that Kim Jong Un, the current leader of North Korea, was seeking new “entertainers” for his own Pleasure Squad, just after the formal three-year mourning period for his father.
WHAT DO DEFECTORS SAY ABOUT THE SQUAD?
Mi-Hyang (she only goes by her first name for her protection) escaped to South Korea after two years of ‘service’ to the late Kim Jong-il. After defecting, she told her story to Marie Claire magazine in 2010.
She said she was only 15 years old when two men in bemedalled green soldier uniforms stormed her classroom without warning, and scanned the room.
One of them pointed to her, and demanded she come with them.
Mi-Hyang said they made a detailed record of her schooling and family history, and directly asked her if she had ever had sex with a boy. “I felt so ashamed to hear such a question,” she said.
When the assessments were complete, the girl was to spend a full decade servicing Kim Jong-il, the father of Kim Jong-un.
She was not allowed to speak to her family, and she knew if she was caught trying to run away, she would be executed immediately.
The chosen girls, she said, had to meet strict criteria. They were to be under 165cm tall, free of scars and blemishes, and had to have a soft, feminine voice. Being a virgin was imperative.
After being “chosen”, rigorous training programs would take place. Girls might be sent to Hong Kong for months at a time for advanced massage training, or sent elsewhere to learn to sing and dance professionally.
Being a teenage student, Mi-Hyang said Kim Jong-il would touch her head and hold her hands, but would never call her for sexual relations.
She remains convinced that if she stayed longer than she did, he eventually would have.
Some critics have doubted the authenticity of Mi-Hyang’s story, but she’s not the only North Korean runaway to speak of the bizarre group.
In his 2015 memoir Dear Leader: Poet, Spy, Escapee – A Look Inside North Korea , North Korean defector Jang Jin-Sung explained that the most attractive girls in North Korea were called ‘Section Five’ girls.
‘Section Five’ refers to the most powerful entity in North Korea - now known as Kim Jong-un’s innermost circle. According to Jin-Sung, their job is to oversee matters related to the leader’s private life, from food to entertainment. The Pleasure Squad falls into the latter.
“After selection, the girls undergo an annual physical inspection to check for disease and to make sure they’re still virgins,” he wrote. “At sixteen, when the girls finish middle school, the regional branches of Section Five make a selection from among them.
“The ones who make it through to the final round are sent for a year’s training and then dispatched throughout the country.
“Most of them go into arranged marriages with personal guards or senior cadres cleared to work in foreign affairs. Some even go on to become cadres themselves. Section Five manages the whole operation.”
Lee Il-Nam, a nephew of Kim Jong-un’s father, also described the Pleasure Squad in a memoir he penned before his assassination, called Kim Jong-il’s Royal Family.
He said exclusive parties at Kim’s official residence in Pyongyang were common. These could last until 3am, and centred on alcohol, sex, and extravagant food. Only 40 people out of his 200 associates were selected.
“The routine at the parties included eating, drinking and dancing, but usually ended with erotic games,” wrote Lee.
“A favourite was a game in which the losers had to take off clothes one by one. It was enforced, regardless of men or women. If they got heavily drunk, the also played a hair-shaving game. If men lost, part of their head hair was shaved, as if it was mown. For women, their pubic hair was shaved.”
He also said there were parties devoted entirely to sex, for when the leader was in a “particularly good mood”.
WHAT HAPPENS TO THE GIRLS AFTERWARDS?
After about a decade of “service”, typically between the ages of 22 and 25, the girls retire from their roles. Reports say they are generally then married off to any of the elite guards looking for a bride.
Regardless of their fate, they are kept under close watch, so as to not reveal these secrets to wider North Korean society.
At the end of 2011, when Kim Jong-il died, his group of girls disbanded and allowed to return to their families.
Government officials were so keen to avoid word of it getting out, they paid each girl $4000 in money and gifts in exchange for swearing to secrecy. That’s nearly twice the yearly income of an average family in North Korea.
Any girl found to have broken this pledge of secrecy would be executed immediately. Their relatives would most likely suffer the same fate.
