Update on the story about the refund from Air France. I cancelled an air ticket with AF, and understood that the actual ticket was not refundable, as the conditions stated, but asked Air France to refund the taxes. Things like departure taxes had not been incurred, as I had not travelled, so I expected a refund of these. Still very unhappy with Air France because I had to write so many emails to them, but at least I have got most of the taxes back. So the moral of this story is that even if the airline says no in the beginning, then keep on at them as they ARE supposed to refund the taxes. It was just a matter of waiting for the tourists to disappear out of the scene then an easy job to capture this scene, which could be from the s but is actually quite recent. Some companies have still not accepted this fact. Far too many companies are not making it clear how to contact them using email. There are so many websites where email addresses are either hidden or else are just not there. Try contacting a customer service department directly at an airline. Other companies hide their email addresses, making contact difficult. Very easy when you want to pay or buy something, but when you have a query or want to get a refund, then it is a very different story. Just been trying to contact AVIS to cancel a car reservation, but have spent a lot of time trying to find their email address. Lesson learnt for next time! Venezuela has appointed its first vice minister for happiness. Not only that, but it has also started a government section to encourage social happiness. The UN now publishes a world happiness report, and Bhutan has its index of happiness. It is also a cruise ship destination, and a stopover for trans-Atlantic yachts. The population is around , mainly on the southern side of the island. Madeira is actually the top of a huge shield volcano, which accounts for the very fertile soil there. The famous Madeira wine originated here, using wine fortified with brandy to produce a stronger and often sweeter wine. The Venezuelan president Nicolas Maduro has now promised to take action against the gangs who are stealing hair, sometimes at gunpoint, to sell to hair salons. And in Saudi Arabia, a man weighing around kg has been airlifted to hospital for treatment. Apparently, the man was so big that part of the apartment had to be demolished so that a fork lift truck could carry him to a military aircraft. He was flown to a hospital for treatment. There is a strange story in the news at the moment about Brent Council in London, England. Brent Council says that the hologram will save GBP a year. This is after they spent GBP 90 million on a new civic centre, which opened this year. And perhaps they forget, that one less real person will now not have a job, and will presumably have to be supported by the government there. False economy?? And in these hard economic times, should any local government be spending GBP 90 million on a new civic centre?? Surely hospitals and schools come first, well before any civic centres. Originally a whaling station, it was the mining of coal that later became important. Spitsbergen is shared between Norway and Russia, and both companies still have coal mines there. There is even a branch of a Norwegian university there, to study Artic sciences. Spitsbergen has a population of around people. Due to the large number of polar bears, trekkers and hikers are required to carry a gun when outside of settlements. There is also a Seed Vault here, a sort of domesday project to store seeds from every country in the world. From Spitsbergen is is not far to the North Pole.
