In a brief proceeding Friday, a Polk County judge set a Jan. 18 evidentiary hearing in connection with the escape of Pieper Lewis, a sex trafficking victim who in a case that drew national attention received probation at Fresh Start Women's Center in Des Moines after killing a man she said had raped her.
Lewis, who recently turned 18, faces being ordered to prison after cutting off a GPS tracking device she was required to wear and leaving the women's center Nov. 4. Des Moines police arrested her Nov. 8, and she remains in the Polk County Jail on misdemeanor escape charge.
She pleaded guilty in June 2021 to voluntary manslaughter and willful injury in the stabbing death a year earlier of Zachary Brooks, a 37-year-old father of three. Then 15, she said a 28-year-old man who trafficked and sexually abused her had sent her to Brooks, who repeatedly raped her. Though the man has not been charged, prosecutors acknowledged during Lewis' September sentencing that she had been a victim of sex trafficking.
She faced up to 20 years in prison for the killing, but Judge David Porter gave her a deferred sentence and placed her on five years' probation, telling her she was getting a one-and-only "second chance."
Authorities have not said whether Lewis has told them why she left the women's center. Prosecutors in a probation revocation report asked for the deferred judgement to be revoked and for her original sentence to be imposed. Court documents do not provide the terms of that original sentence, which weren't revealed at her sentencing hearing.
Lewis did not appear at Friday's hearing. Her attorney, Matthew Sheeley, said afterward that the Jan. 18 hearing will concern evidence about Lewis' escape.
As part of Lewis' sentence, Porter also her to pay $150,000 to Brooks' family, as required by state law of people convicted of homicide. A GoFundMe fundraiser to help Lewis pay the restitution raised more than $500,000.
For now, the money remains with the GoFundMe organization as Lewis' attorneys await a response to their request that Porter overturn the restitution order . It's unclear how Lewis' escape will affect those proceedings.

Leaders of a Kansas county have pledged to find funding to help the local prosecutor's office search through decades of records connected to a former police detective who is accused of abusing Black women and girls. The Unified Government Commission voted Thursday to commit $1.7 million to digitize boxes of files related to former Kansas City police detective Roger Golubski. Golubski is accused in two federal indictments of sexually harassing and raping Black females for years while he was a law enforcement officer, and of taking bribes and providing protection to a sex trafficking operation in the 1990s.

Hearing for Iowa Teen Who Killed Rapist Moved to January
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — An judge on Friday set a hearing for January to consider whether to order prison for an 18-year-old sex-trafficking victim in Iowa who killed her rapist and pleaded guilty last year to involuntary manslaughter and willful injury.
Pieper Lewis was sentenced Sept. 13 to probation for five years to be served at a Des Moines women's shelter, but less than two months later she cut off the court-ordered GPS ankle monitor and walked away from Fresh Start Women's Center. She was arrested five days later and put in jail, where she remains.
An Iowa Department of Corrections probation officer had asked the court to revoke the terms of her probation, and Judge David Porter set a hearing Friday to consider the matter. But after meeting briefly with lawyers, Porter scheduled a new hearing on Jan. 18. It wasn't immediately clear why the hearing was postponed.
Porter told Lewis at her sentencing hearing in September that he was giving her a second chance by allowing her to serve time at the women's shelter and complete community service instead of prison. He said she wouldn’t get a third chance.
Lewis had faced a 20-year prison sentence in the June 2020 killing of Zachary Brooks, 37. Lewis was 15 when she stabbed Brooks more than 30 times in a Des Moines apartment. She initially was charged with first-degree murder, but prosecutors agreed to a plea deal dropped that charge.
Lewis has said that she was trafficked against her will to Brooks for sex multiple times and stabbed him in a fit of rage after he raped her again.
The Associated Press does not typically name victims of sexual assault, but Lewis agreed to have her name used previously in stories about her case.

Lawsuit filed Monday in Los Angeles alleges actor, then 35, ‘coerced sexual contact’ with 14-year-old ‘on multiple occasions’
A woman has filed a lawsuit against Warren Beatty , alleging that the actor coerced her into sex in 1973 when he was 35 and she was 14 and 15.
The suit, filed on Monday in Los Angeles superior court by Kristina Hirsch, does not list Beatty, now 85, by name but clearly references him. The defendant is referred to as “a renowned and well-known actor and producer” who was nominated for an academy award for his role as Clyde in 1967’s Bonnie and Clyde.
Hirsch, who now lives in Louisiana, alleges that she met Beatty on a movie set in 1973, where he paid her “undue attention”, commented on her looks and gave her his phone number. The suit claims Beatty called Hirsch several times, invited her to his hotel, took her on car rides, offered to help with her homework and commented numerous times about losing her virginity.
According to the suit, the defendant “used his position and status as an adult and a Hollywood movie star to coerce sexual contact with plaintiff on multiple occasions, including oral sex, simulated sex and finally coerced sexual intercourse with the minor child”.
The suit claims that Hirsch was “initially thrilled” by the defendant’s attention and believed herself to be in a romantic relationship with him.
Hirsch filed the suit via a 2019 California law that opened a three-year “look-back window” for claims of child sexual abuse that would have been dismissed by the statute of limitations. The window closes on 1 January.
Hirsch is seeking compensation for psychological, mental and emotional distress, and states that she has “issues with trust and control” as well as difficulty interacting with people in positions of authority as a result of sexual abuse.
“As a direct result of the molestation by defendant Doe, plaintiff has had issues with her personal life, such as issues with trust and control,” the complaint reads. “These feelings have caused plaintiff substantial emotional distress, guilt, anxiety, nervousness and fear.”
Hirsch is represented by Michael Reck and Michael Finnegan of the law firm of Jeff Anderson & Associates, which has handled sex abuse cases involving the Catholic church and the Boy Scouts of America.
Beatty has yet to make any statement and the Guardian has contacted his lawyers for comment.
