Nintendogs + Cats ( ニンテンドッグス+キャッツ , Nintendoggusu + Kyattsu ) is a real-time pet simulation video game for the Nintendo 3DS . It is a sequel to the Nintendogs games for the Nintendo DS systems. It was announced alongside the 3DS during Nintendo 's E3 press conference [3] [4] [5] and is a launch game , released February 26, 2011, in Japan, March 25, 2011, in Europe and March 27, 2011, in North America, launched earlier in Australia. [1] [6]

It is one of the first online-enabled games to use the Nintendo Network and is the first such Nintendo-published game, although the Nintendo Network brand itself was not revealed until early 2012. All three editions of the game were re-released on the Nintendo eShop on January 30, 2013, in Japan, December 19, 2013, in Europe and November 6, 2014, in North America.

Much the same style of gameplay is common to the original Nintendogs , including various breeds of dogs and cats , and training exercises. There is now a tutorial for each trick as the game progresses, and the player is no longer required to say the exact name of the trick. Touchscreen , microphone , and camera input uses facial recognition technology to interact with the player. [3] [7] For example, after a while, the pet will facially recognize and greet the player, and may react negatively to a new player. If the face is close to the camera, then the puppy will come up to lick it; they will also mimic a head tilt. [8]

Competitions have five cups each: Junior, Amateur, Pro, Master, and Nintendogs. In addition to Disc Competition and Obedience Trial, there a new competition, Lure Coursing.

The screen is in stereoscopic 3D. [3] [7] Augmented reality projects the player's dog or cat onto one of the "?" AR Games cards. [9] If one of the Nintendo character cards (such as Mario, Link, Samus, or Kirby) is used, the dogs will appear wearing hats, fitting the theme of their respective games. These hats are also in the 3DS built-in app, StreetPass Mii Plaza by unlocking them when a dog or cat hero defeats an enemy depending on the room they are in during the game "Find Mii". The game uses SpotPass and often a Presidential Victor will appear, which is a President with the pet dog.

The game comes in three different versions: Nintendogs + Cats: French Bulldog & New Friends , Nintendogs + Cats: Golden Retriever & New Friends , and Nintendogs + Cats: Toy Poodle & New Friends . [10] Each version features many breeds. In Japan, the Golden Retriever version is called Shiba Inu & New Friends .

Each version begins with nine dog breeds, but all twenty seven are unlockable in each game. All the breeds from the original Nintendogs games return plus eight new breeds including: French Bulldog , Basset Hound , Great Dane , and Pomeranian . Three cat varieties appear in each version of the game, however there are no distinct breeds. [11]

Designer Shigeru Miyamoto stated that the idea of dogs and cats getting along came from his own pets. This made him think of the Disney movie The Incredible Journey and its 1993 remake, Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey . He stated that "Making a game called Nintencats just didn't seem right for Nintendo", so he brought cats into Nintendogs . [12]

Nintendogs + Cats has received generally positive reviews by critics, having an aggregate score of 74.14% on GameRankings and 71/100 on Metacritic . [13] [14] Japanese magazine Famitsu gave the game a 38/40 but still the highest points for a Nintendo 3DS launch game. [16]

Two months after the first launch, Nintendo announced sales of 1.71 million units, making it officially the first platinum game for the 3DS. [22] As of December 31, 2015, the game has worldwide sales of 3.99 million. [23]

This game just came in the mail today, and I'm in love! It's so cute! The graphics are so clear and colorful. The puppies are adorable. All the versions are the same, yes, it just depends on what you start out with. all 27 breeds are unlockable, it's just that it may take a while. This is the version I ordered, and I settled with the toy poodle. All the pupies are cute and I already have three kittens unlocked on my first day playing it. If you're a fan of pet simulation, cute puppies, and want something that will put you in a better mood on a bad day, nintendogs 3DS is the way to go. :)

IM SO EXCITED

By Nikki T on April 5, 2022

I’ve always been a fan of Nintendogs, and I love this version. I have a little Bull Terrier with black around his eyes named β€˜Alice’ because the markings remind me of the badass rocker Alice Cooper. 😎 I’m 18, but I still like to relax. This game is fun for all ages, in my opinion.

I bought this for my daughter for Christmas to be delivered by Santa with her 3DS. It came very quickly. She played it Christmas Day (we actually played it together) and it is so cute and very interactive. It was easy to follow and use. She is 7 years old and had no problem knowing how to play and enjoyed it being interactive (for instance you can "pet" the puppies in the screen and they react to your "touch").

I have enjoyed this purchase! It was delivered with haste and arrived just when was expected. It's a fun game and is a great pet when your landlord won't let you have real animals on the premises. The pink color can be a little deceiving for a boy to purchase the game, but it's nothing to be too cautious of: you don't have to look at the cover a whole lot, and you can personalize your entire game. Great game, great order!

So far I've bought this game twice here and the second time it was even a little cheaper!!! My granddaughters love this 3DS game the oldest is "training" her puppy so that she can earn money to "buy" a kitten LOLOL Love that it has an AR card which allows them to "hold" their pet in their hand. Both girls asked for and LOVED this game so win win for Granny Sonya!!!

I'm a 22 year old female and I am obsessed with this game. I find it to be so much fun! I think the game looks amazing in 3D but personally I rather play it in 2D. I noticed as you start out in the game you only have a few dogs to select from but the farther you get into the game you will be able to unlock more breeds of dogs as well as more items to buy in the store ect. I like the fact you are able to have cats now but you really can not do much with them. You can not take them out for walks or anything..just sit at home and play with them. (I take my cat in real life out for walks so I thought it would let you in the game as well lol, oh well). Overall I do recommend this game.

I really like Nintendogs and cats toy poodle I bought this one from amazon also I got french bulldog from gamestop these games are fun and have cute puppy's and kitty's in them the only downside is the in game activities are limited two twice per day but other than that great game

Nintendogs is still Cute....

The game is a very cute upgrade to the old version of Nintendogs. The newer Graphics and activities are just as fun. i do miss the old map where u can choose which store or park or gym you want to go to. you can for this one too but you have to pull your dog to one side of the road or the other in order to the animal to aknowlege the shop/park/etc. But aside from that i love the feature where you have a pedometer and you close your ds and your animal walks with you. You also get a variety of gifts depending on how far you walk or run. But From what ive played i do like this version of the game. Its interesting how you can turn the camera around to see the animal from a different angle or to take cute pictures with. I still enjoy this game and i would recommend to someone who likes animals or has played the previous ver of Nintendogs.

Fun game to pass the time

Fun and mindless just the way I remember it to be.

This game is loved by my granddaughters 9 & 8. Very easy to understand and play and kept them occupied them on a 5 hour flight!
