Non-Metallic Electric Enclosure FAQ

Non-Metallic Electric Enclosure FAQ

What is a non-metallic electrical enclosure?

Adjustable electrical boxes are commonly used to house electric components that need protection from the elements. Non-metallic enclosures are made from non-conducting materials that are resistant to corrosion. These materials are ideal in wet environments, outdoor locations and applications where corrosive chemicals are a risk. They stand up to rust and corrosion better than metals, producing better, longer-lasting protection in these challenging environments.

What non-metallic materials are used for enclosures?

Non-metallic enclosures can be made from a number of materials, but the two most common are polycarbonate (thermoplastic) and fiberglass. Each has its own advantages, but both materials are resistant to corrosion and suited for uses outdoors and in harsh environments.

What are the advantages of polycarbonate enclosures?

Polycarbonate is durable and heat resistant. It functions fine in extreme temperature ranges and is UV-resistant. It has strong chemical resistance and can be used for air-sealed electrical box designs that better protect housed components. Polycarbonate is lightweight, easy to modify and affordable.

What are the advantages of fiberglass enclosures?

Fiberglass enclosures are also durable and chemical resistant. They do well withstanding UV, and they operate fine in extreme temperatures. Specifically, fiberglass enclosures have high impact durability and more versatile molding capabilities. They are radio transparent, and their low cost and high durability make them very cost-effective.
