Tips for buying XC skate skis Thread starter Seth Start date Jun 25, Register to view full-size images Join today. Seth I am figure skating. Ski Pass. Jun 6, 48, 33, 1, The Higher Ground. Already have some classics but looking to add some skates to the quiver. What do I need to know and look for? Got no idea about them really. Jan 17, 1, 4 0 Ballarat. May 15, 4 88 Baranduda. Weight is main factor, most skate skis come in various stiffnesses with each length. Oct 16, 54, 32, 1, Narbethong, Vic. How much skating have you done? Err, none as yet. If it had been a couple of years ago, Madshus put some skates out almost by accident. These skates have side-cut! And they never advertised them. And they've never repeated them. But they're great for that transition from classic to skating as opposed to those half-assed 'combi skis'. I have 6 pairs in hire which I hire out to those who are transitioning to skating. But experienced and very good skaters love their shorter length and greater width as well as the side-cut. Having said all that, I doubt you'd find any for sale anywhere. If I were you, I'd hire skates for the time being until you're confident skating and built up the muscles for it. Then go for the purchase this time next year. Stiffness varies, from recreational to racing. Bases are designed for snow temps so aim for warmer. The transition from classic to skate is huge but a lot of fun if you're fit. Suggest hire and a few lessons, and pick the instructor's brains about what to buy. There's usually quite a lot around 2nd hand as folk's style changes - partic. Proper skating isn't for everyone. There's nothing between stopped and working. PS; there's no reason why you can't take a skating lesson on your classics. They don't work as well as proper skaters but you can get a feel for the game. Don't know if Pilot bindings is the way to go. Most skis are now being manufactured with the NIS plate, and although it's possible to drill through the NIS plate to attach pilots, it's inelegant and not totally satisfactory. Salomon will of course stick with Pilot, but most other manufacturers are leaving the Salomon system alone. May 26, Buy the boots first, then decide on what bindings to use. NIS is a nice idea but no use to you if the boots won't fit your feet. I have found that only Salomon boots fit me, and their bindings work well, as do NNN. Drilling through the NIS plate is no harder than doing a regular binding mount. The most important thing with skating skis is getting the correct flex for your weight and strength. Ski models will vary in weight, etc, but the crucial thing is the flex. Demo first if at all possible, or buy from someone with a flex tester if you can - unfortunately this is not possible in Oz AFAIK. Older Peltonen skis used to come with a suggested weight on a label on the topsheet; the ones I have say kg my weight is always in this range and flex exactly as I would wish. I'm not sure if Peltonen are still doing this, and know of nobody else who has. If you look at the 'generic' length recommendations from Fischer and then at what's listed on some of the US websites that have flex testers you will see that there is considerable flex variation possible in manufacturing. Still, if it's a first pair this probably won't be a big deal. Shorter skis are easier to maintain a high tempo with, handy for climbing, and are also a bit more manoeuvrable. Longer skis should be a bit more stable at speed, and will probably glide a bit better in soft conditions. Lighter is always a good thing, all else being equal. If in doubt, go shorter. Combi boots will be okay, but classical boots with a soft sole and no plastic cuff will not make things easy. They are good for improving balance and ankle strength though - once you know what you're doing! Lessons are highly recommended, as is hiring appropriate gear to get a feel for how things are supposed to work. Interesting tips so far. Thanks everyone. How do you work out the ski length needed? For my classics I had no choice it was a matter of what would fit in my ski bag home on the plane. Aug 8, 6, newcastle, nsw, australia. I've started out in Cat 2, dabbled in Cat 3 but moved into Cat 1. These days though I've become that most important but much maligned category 'The Resort Telemarker. Jul 13, 50, 68, 1, Middle Oz. Wilderness Sports at Perisher have some skates in demo. Paddies at Jindy amy have as well. You may not be able to demo your exact size but you shoudl be able to get close enough to get a feel for the ski. The exact ski size is worked off a chart supplied by the ski builder which looks at your weight. I started skating several seasons ago cos punting around Lake Mountain on heavy metal was a pain. From recommendations on this forum I went for the Pilot bindings. It's a snappy rig and I'm very happy with it. Got good service and advice from Snowgum Wodonga. Clearly Teckel up at Narbethong also knows her stuff, if you're Vic based. She's a generous no-BS contributor to the forum and deserves our support. I've been into teck's shop on the way into lake mountain before Wodonga is going to be easier though. I live nearer to there. It's great in principle, but May 30, 18 1 53 Canberra. Even though it doesn't look great, it actually binds better than drilling it straight into the wood. My best advice would be to just find the shoes that fit you the best, and go with what ever binding they require. If that means drilling holes in the NIS plate then so be it. Boots first, bindings second. Repeat times. In my case this means Salomon or possibly Atomic and not any of the NNN boot makers' offerings, none of which fit me. After this has been worked out - and only then - should bindings be selected. What santanas says. You must log in or register to reply here. Similar threads. Where to start with XC skis?
