Sasha Banks and Naomi are paying the price for walking out on “Monday Night Raw” earlier this week.
WWE announced on “Friday Night SmackDown” that their women’s tag team champions have been “suspended indefinitely” and stripped of their titles after refusing to wrestle in the main event six-pack challenge match and that a tournament will be held to crown new champions. WWE had announced on Raw that the two women walked out before changing the main event and chose to directly address the situation on the broadcast again.
Banks and Naomi’s merchandise pages had also been taken down from WWE Shop at the time of publication.
“Sasha Banks and Naomi let us all down,” Michael Cole said during SmackDown on Friday. “The WWE women’s tag team champions walked off the show and walked out of the building during Monday Night Raw.”
He then stuck to details of WWE side of the events from Monday, saying the two women took their tag team championships into the office of head of talent relations John Laurinaitis, left them there and walked out of the arena.
“Their actions disappointed millions of WWE fans and their fellow superstars,” Cole said before announcing the suspension.

Banks and Naomi, according to WWE’s statement on Monday, left Scope Arena in Norfolk, Virginia and refused to be part of match with Becky Lynch, Asuka, Doudrop and Niki A.S.H. to determine the No. 1 contender for Raw women’s champion Bianca Belair at the Hell in a Cell pay-per-view on June 5. Asuka defeated Lynch to earn the spot in a singles match in its place.
Naomi, according to Fightful Select , was supposed to win the match and face Belair and Banks would go into a singles program with SmackDown women’s champion Ronda Rousey, leaving their tag team gold and the division in potential limbo. Banks took up the issues directly with WWE chairman Vince McMahon that day, according to reports.
WWE’s statement regarding the events also said Banks and Naomi — who have yet to personally give their side of the story – didn’t feel respected as tag team champions and “were uncomfortable in the ring with two of their opponents.” Fightful Select reported that Banks and Naomi’s issues centered around the direction of the women’s tag team division and was not concerned with the women in the match.
If WWE is going to hold a scripted tournament, it likely will need to make some new women’s tag teams as there are technically only three other known teams outside of Banks and Naomi currently on the roster.

Less than 24 hours later, the story of Naomi and Sasha Banks walking out on WWE Monday Night RAW continues to dominate headlines. Now, a new report is providing insight as to why the WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions made their decision.
Early this morning, PWInsider revealed that several sources had told them that the original plan for Banks and Naomi on RAW, a six-pack challenge for the right to face Bianca Belair for the WWE RAW Women’s Championship at Hell in a Cell, would have seen Naomi pin Sasha Banks to win the match and receive the title shot.
Furthermore, Banks and Naomi were to have been featured in several segments building to them facing off in the match. Post-main-event, the partners would have celebrated Naomi’s victory.
Sources say Naomi would go on to lose to Belair at Hell in a Cell. Though not confirmed, it was also noted that some sources believed that Sasha Banks would go on to face WWE Smackdown Women’s Champion Ronda Rousey at the same event, with Banks also losing.
It was also noted that this led to concerns from Banks and Naomi regarding creativity over the WWE Women’s Tag Titles, and later in the afternoon, an alternative idea was pitched that would have seen Banks and Naomi lose a short tag match to set up their next challenges. While PWInsider couldn’t confirm it 100%, they noted one source told them the planned opponents were Doudrop and Nikki A.S.H. , who were at one point also scheduled for the six-pack challenge.
The report goes on to say that Sasha Banks and Naomi were told before RAW by producer Molly Holly that WWE was going forward with plans for the six-pack challenge. This then led to Banks and Naomi informing WWE Executive Vice President of Talent Relations John Laurinaitis that they were leaving, giving him the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championships in the process. The report echos WWE’s statement regarding the matter during Monday Night RAW last night.
From there, it was said that Vince McMahon was informed of Banks and Naomi’s departure either shortly before or shortly after RAW began. A backstage vignette between Becky Lynch and Adam Pearce setting up Asuka and Lynch as the main event was pitched on the spot, with McMahon approving of it. One source suggested it was Lynch that came up with the idea for the segment.
Finally, those backstage at WWE apparently did not believe Naomi or Sasha Banks took issue with the finish to the six-pack challenge, but rather the duo’s creative going forward as the Women’s Tag Team Champions.
It should be noted that PWInsider’s report seems to confirm a Twitter thread from user @Addidas_Head88 from last night regarding the situation. The thread stated that Banks and Naomi had been upset with WWE for some time due to the promotion’s handling of the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championships, which the duo won at WrestleMania 38.
As of this time, neither Naomi nor Sasha Banks has commented on their walkout or WWE’s statement regarding their walkout .
Wrestling Inc. will continue to provide coverage of this developing story.

Sasha Banks and Naomi are reportedly not being paid during their suspension.
As the war between WWE and former WWE women’s tag team champions Sasha Banks and Naomi rages on, it was recently revealed that the polarizing duo will not be paid during their suspension.
“The suspension is without pay,” wrote Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter .
“In addition, the company pulled all of their merchandise from its website, meaning they would not get any new merchandise revenue. There was merchandise for both women available at the live shows over the weekend because that stuff is prepared ahead of time.”
“Based on WWE contracts, the company also has the right to freeze the contract if suspending someone with the idea that they refused to work,” the report continued.
“In the case of Fatu (Naomi), that is notable because it was believed her deal expired in around two months. It is known that her deal was coming due and she was in negotiations for a new deal. Most WWE new deals have been for significantly more money than the old deals because the competition in wrestling has raised the salary structure. It is not known when Varnado’s (Sasha Banks) contract was due.”
Banks also reportedly has two months left on her contract according to former WWE writer Kazeem Famuyide. It’s unknown whether Sasha and Nami’s contracts are currently frozen, but WWE’s ability to freeze contracts could be a powerful leverage tool in a rift where both sides will have considerable leverage.
Assuming both Banks and Naomi have a few months left on their contract, the threat of leaving WWE for AEW is far more real, though the pair may have to return to work briefly to finish out their deals before doing so. Though tensions remain high between Banks, Naomi and WWE, the last thing WWE wants is two of its top stars leaving for AEW within the coming months. With Black women continuing to take over the pro wrestling business— much to the chagrin of its toxic hardcore fanbase —Sasha Banks and Naomi could help AEW appeal to three demographics it has alienated in its young history: Black viewers , women and casual fans.
WWE has no shortage of precedents for freezing contracts, including Bryan Danielson, whose three-year contract was frozen for seven years after his abrupt retirement from in-ring competition in 2015.
WWE’s ability to freeze contracts is one of many questionable employment tactics that has received much-needed attention throughout the Sasha and Naomi saga, but it’s just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to WWE contracts. In 2020, presidential candidate Andrew Yang called out WWE over its misclassification of WWE Superstars as independent contractors and he was vocal about WWE banning its Superstars from independently profiting from third-party deals.
“If I’m not the Secretary of Labor I’m pretty confident I’ll have his or her number to talk about the ridiculous classification of WWE wrestlers as independent contractors while controlling their name and likeness for years, even for something as benign as Cameo,” tweeted Yang.
President Biden went on to appoint former union official Marty Walsh as Secretary of Labor. Two years into Biden’s presidency, the issue of pro wrestler contracts remains off the agenda.
Sasha Banks and Naomi’s strife with WWE continues a recent pattern of high-profile stars walking out on the company—and their contracts—in some form or fashion. Toni Storm abruptly left WWE toward the end of last year following a feud with Charlotte Flair. Following her release, Storm quickly took advantage of her contractual freedom by launching an OnlyFans account, which she could never do in WWE for an assortment of reasons. Just a few weeks earlier, Jeff Hardy was released by WWE after bizarrely leaving through the crowd during the main event of house show from Corpus Christi, Texas.
With both WWE and Sasha Banks/Naomi sticking to their guns through WWE’s latest contract dispute, this saga has no end in sight but remains intriguing due to its wide range of outcomes.

Sasha Banks pulled the plug on Boss Time on “Monday Night Raw” – literally.
The WWE star and Naomi, her fellow women’s tag team champion, “walked out” of Scope Arena in Norfolk, Virginia prior to their match on Monday, WWE confirmed to The Post. PWInsider was first to report the pair leaving the building.
Banks and Naomi arrived at the arena and were informed they were to take part in the main event of “Monday Night Raw,” according to WWE. The announced match was that Banks, Naomi, Becky Lynch, Asuka, Doudrop and Nikki A.S.H. were going to take part in a six-pack challenge match to determine the next person to face Bianca Belair for her Raw women’s championship at the Hell in a Cell pay-per-view on June 5.
Banks and Naomi apparently took issue with the match. Naomi was scheduled to win, according to Fightful Select.
“During the broadcast, they walked into WWE Head of Talent Relations John Laurinaitis’ office with their suitcases in hand, placed their tag team championship belts on his desk and walked out,” WWE said in a statement. “They claimed they weren’t respected enough as tag team champions. And even though they had eight hours to rehearse and construct their match, they claimed they were uncomfortable in the ring with two of their opponents – even though they’d had matches with those individuals in the past with no consequence.”
According to reports, Banks took up her concerns directly to WWE chairman Vince McMahon, who chose not to change the creative. Fightful Select also reported that Banks and Naomi’s issues were mainly rooted in proposed plans for them as tag team champions and not the women they were scheduled to work with.
WWE pivoted on the show by having Lynch frantically approach on-screen WWE official Adam Pearce to tell him Banks and Naomi had left the building. The match was switched to a one-on-one contest between Lynch and Asuka, who ended up getting the win.
On the broadcast, commentator Corey Graves mentioned them leaving the building multiple times during the show, so it is always possible the incident is used in an on-screen angle in the future.
“Sasha Banks and Naomi summarily and unprofessionally walked out,” Graves said.
Last minute changes are very much the norm prior to WWE shows as creative is very fluid, but this incident didn’t seem to sit well with the company.
“Monday Night Raw is a scripted live TV show, whose characters are expected to perform the requirements of their contract,” WWE said. “We regret we were unable to deliver, as advertised, tonight’s main event.
