Nikola Peković Returns as Montenegrin Coach

Former NBA Star Nikola Peković Makes Surprise Return to Basketball as Head Coach of Montenegrin National Team

Podgorica, Montenegro – April 18, 2025

In a stunning development for basketball fans worldwide, former NBA enforcer and Montenegrin legend Nikola Peković has been named the new head coach of the Montenegrin national team. The announcement, made earlier today by the Basketball Federation of Montenegro, marks Peković’s first major coaching role after years away from the spotlight.

Peković, 39, was one of the most physically dominant centers in the NBA during his tenure with the Minnesota Timberwolves (2008-2017). Known for his bruising post play and relentless work ethic, the 6'11' big man averaged 12.6 points and 6.7 rebounds per game over his career before injuries forced his early retirement. Since stepping away from the game, Peković had taken on an executive role with the Timberwolves and later returned to Montenegro, where he has been involved in youth basketball development.

Now, he takes on his biggest challenge yet: leading Montenegro back to international relevance. The national team has struggled in recent years, failing to qualify for the last two FIBA World Cups. However, with rising stars like NBA center Marko Simonović and EuroLeague guard Igor Drobnjak, Peković believes the squad has untapped potential.

'I am honored and ready for this challenge,' Peković said at today’s press conference. 'Montenegro has talent, heart, and a proud basketball tradition. My goal is to bring back the toughness and discipline that made us respected worldwide.'

Reactions have been overwhelmingly positive. Former teammate Kevin Love tweeted, 'Congrats to the big fella! Coach Pek will have them playing hard-nosed basketball—just like he did.' Meanwhile, Serbian coaching legend Željko Obradović called it a 'great move for Balkan basketball.'

Peković’s first test will come in the upcoming FIBA European qualifiers, where Montenegro will face tough competition from Serbia, Greece, and Turkey. If his playing career was any indication, opponents should expect a physical, no-nonsense approach.
