Nikki Araguz was 18 years old when she began to live her life as a woman, after a lifetime of feeling as if her gender identity did not correspond with her anatomy.
Following the realization of her gender identity, she married a firefighter named Thomas Araguz III, who she "loved tremendously," and underwent gender confirmation surgery a year after their wedding.
But Araguz's husband was tragically killed while working to diffuse a monstrous factory fire.
Following her husband's death, Araguz was forced to fight a drawn-out legal battle with her late husband's family in an effort to receive his firefighter's benefits. A Texas judge effectively voided Araguz's marriage, telling the widow that the marriage was not considered legal since she was born a male. The fact that Araguz had both gone through gender reassignment surgery and had government documents that reflected her new sex as female did not appear to matter.
Araguz, who also blogs for The Huffington Post Gay Voices , went on to meet and fall in love with a Houston-based artist named William Loyd.
When the two attempted to get married, however, Araguz encountered problems with legal system in Houston, which informed her that their union would be considered a same-sex marriage -- even though Araguz has both a license and passport that identifies her as a woman.
"I had a sex change. I am a woman and I have proof of it," she stated.
In an effort to have their union recognized, the pair eventually traveled to nearby Corpus Christi where, according to a press release sent to The Huffington Post, her "proof of a sex change was accepted and she could finally start over with a second chance at happiness."
Araguz is now living with Loyd and his two children from a previous marriage. Loyd's daughter Charlotte is certainly happy with the result and summed up the situation perfectly:
"People should love who they want and who they want to marry is who they want to marry."
CORRECTION : An earlier version of this article included a misspelling of William Loyd's name.

Justin Grahm Purdue was born a boy in the summer of 1975. His mother, Sheri Bockelman, said people always confused her little boy for a girl. "Strangers would come up and they would say, 'Oh, what a beautiful little girl.' And I'd roll my eyes and say, 'Yes, but it's a boy,'" Bockelman said.
In grade school, Justin had no interest in boyish games like his peers did. Doctors suggested that his mother dress him in more boyish clothing. Still, he continued to gravitate to traditionally feminine activities, playing with Barbie dolls and dressing up.
Justin's internal struggles continued into adolescence. He was mocked and brutally ridiculed by his peers.
The physical differences between Justin and other boys became more pronounced. Friends noticed that Justin, pictured left, had hips, a svelte figure, round shoulders, and a more feminine voice than his peers. It wasn't long before Justin began living a double life, going to school dressed as a boy, but changing into girl's clothes as soon as he got out.
Justin took on the name Nikki, inspired by her fascination with a longtime back-up singer for his idol Madonna. After high school, Justin/Nikki began life as a woman. Nikki Purdue spent her late teens and early 20s overindulging at bars and was arrested for both theft and driving while intoxicated.
After a failed marriage, drug use and even jail time, Nikki Purdue turned to God. At church, she met volunteer firefighter Thomas Araguz and instantly was smitten. As this playful picture shows, Nikki said he swept her off her feet. When things got serious, she says she opened up to Araguz about her secrets, including being transgender.
The couple married in the summer of 2008. Two months later, Nikki Araguz's dream of physically becoming a woman finally came true. She flew to Colorado for sexual reassignment surgery and said her husband was aware and fully supported her.
On July 3, 2010, Thomas Araguz died while fighting a fire at an egg farm in Boling, Texas. He was 30. Because he died in the line of duty, there are death benefits potentially totaling as much as $1 million to be claimed by his surviving heirs.
Thomas Araguz's family now is battling Nikki Araguz in court, saying her status as a transgender woman makes her ineligible to receive his death benefits. Attorneys for Thomas Araguz's mother allege that he never knew his wife was born male. The case currently is making its way through the legal system and it could be several months before a decision is handed down. Thomas Araguz is pictured here with his mother and father.

Who threatened to expose NikkieTutorials?

Apr. 15 2020, Updated 10:46 p.m. ET
With more than 12 million subscribers on YouTube, a similar number of followers on Instagram and a reputation as a makeup expert, Nikkie de Jager aka YouTuber NikkieTutorials belongs among the ranks of Jeffree Star, Jaclyn Hill, and Patrick Starrr. After a botched collection in 2017 with TooFaced , NikkieTutorials apologized to her fans and she came back stronger than ever.
She rounded off an enviable 2019 with her new fiance, Dylan , and it seemed like nothing was going to stop her from having the same success in 2020. When trolls threatened to reveal something about the vlogger that she had been keeping private, she posted a powerful video.
NikkieTutorials posted a video on Jan. 13 entitled, "I'm Coming Out." The title was only the tip of the iceberg, as NikkieTutorials addressed her identity and why she decided to open up about it now.
Is NikkieTutorials transgender? We have the details on what she said in her video.
Nikkie opened up her video by saying that it would be incredibly serious and personal. She explained that she had been keeping a part of herself private since her career began, but that someone was threatening to expose it.
"That chance was taken away from me," she said about choosing when she wanted to share her secret.
She said that she wanted to take control of the narrative, and finally reveal this piece of information on her own terms.
"I want to start the year off by finally revealing a part of my life that has made me who I am. I want to talk about a part of myself that makes me me," Nikkie continued."When I was younger, I was born in the wrong body, which means I am transgender. Now — it feels so surreal saying this — filming this video is scary, but it feels so liberating and freeing."
Nikkie went on to say that she hopes her admission will allow others to feel comfortable enough to be open too.
"This world needs us," she said about the trans community. "We need to accept each other. We need to respect each other. But, most of all, we need to hear each other and understand."
Nikkie continued her video by saying that she wanted her viewers to embrace all types of people. She also wished that they would all learn to have self-love.
"The time for you to love yourself and to express yourself the way you truly feel is now," she said.
Nikkie went on to elaborate on her trans journey, by saying that her mom thought she was expecting a girl when she was pregnant with Nikkie.
"Little did she know that she was," Nikkie joked. "It was a surprise to my mom, and a surprise to me once I had a brain to think with."
She explained that throughout her childhood, she was often confused as to why she had to present as male. She didn't want to wear pants or keep her hair short, and she knew from an early age that this identity wasn't who she was.
"All of me was girly," Nikkie said. "My mom knew immediately that I was either going to be gay, or a different type of story."
She got emotional when discussing how her mom was always supportive of who she was.
By the age of 6, Nikkie said that she was growing her hair out. A year later, she began to wear dresses and more feminine clothes to school. Her teachers supported her all along the way, which she said was crucial to her feeling accepted and encouraged.
In addition to revealing she is trans, Nikkie also went into detail about her transition journey. She explained that she first got hormones as an early teen, partly in attempt to stop her big growth spurt.
"I fully transitioned by the time I was 14," she said. "I got my hormones... I kept on growing, so I got growth stoppers."
She then stated that she had fully transitioned by the age of 19.
"I transitioned while on YouTube," she explained.
The YouTuber went on to talk about how her relationship with now-fiancé Dylan developed, and how she was concerned with how he would react to her being trans. She said that dating was always difficult for her, because she had to be able to trust someone enough to tell them about being trans.
"I wait and tell my full story until I know I am in good hands," she explained. "Because people are scary and dangerous."
She said that Dylan knows she is trans, and that she wished she had told him sooner than she did because it was "magical" when he finally knew.
Nikkie noted that she and Dylan otherwise keep their relationship private, so she would not be talking further about how she told him, or his exact reaction.
In a heartbreaking moment, Nikkie said that she was worried her fans would not trust her or look at her in the same way once the video went up.
"I am still Nikkie," she said, before explaining that her channel will still be all about makeup.
While Nikkie's video has been receiving a lot of love in the comments section of her YouTube and Instagram pages, she was concerned about how the reveal would go over. She hadn't been planning on posting a video about her trans experience, but she had to when others threatened to out her.
"I have been blackmailed by people who wanted to leak my story to the press," Nikkie said. "It was frightening to know that there are so many people out there who are evil."
She said the blackmailers had told her that they wanted to expose her because they thought she was too scared to do so herself. Nikkie then spoke directly to those who threatened her and gave them the middle finger.
Nikkie shifted her attention to her fans and her family. Through her tears, Nikkie thanked her family for being supportive, and for her fans who would give her an outpouring of love.
"If you feel trapped and you feel like there is no way out, just know that it gets better," Nikkie said before concluding her video.
