Sure sex sells...but in the case of bikini posing and the bikini competition class... Sure they're selling themselves to the judges I suppose but to what other end.
I remember the first competition I attended and they started with the women's bikini. I wasn't familiar with women's bikini as a category and man was I blown away. First lady went up did a little "bend and snap" or whatever. Then when she turned and stuck her ass out... I mean... bodybuilding and physique competitions are about flaunting your stuff and being gone over like a dog at a dog show. But the bend at the waist booty show, whatever that pose is called, I was so thrown off.
I'm getting off on a tangent a little bit and I don't really have a point to make other than I was really pretty shocked the first time I was introduced to this class. I'm no competitor but I do consider bodybuilding and physique competitions as serious business. Then this first lady comes out and presents herself like she's in heat, turns her head, and winks at the judges. Then the next did the same...and the rest. I almost thought I'd gone into the wrong show or something, no way that could possibly be serious.
A lot of girls do figure instead because bikini is so sexualized. That's the class though, its basically scored on attractiveness.
Just read this thread to answer your question. TL;DR: Sexiest girl wins. She may not have the nicest abs or quads, she may just happen to have a really nice ass and that's what the judges liked the most. It's so subjective that it almost doesn't matter.
There was a discussion about physique and bikini competitions, how there is a softcore porn side of the business that girls sometimes need to do to ensure they win, etc. It's crazy, but I'd be hard pressed that sex or exploitation doesn't occur in some form of a competition focused 100% on a woman's body in some shape or form.

Women's sports in general have a sex appeal the men don't. Look at Ronda Rousey or Anna Kournikova; so much of their appeal is being poised as a sex kitten with an athletic edge.

Because, generally speaking, movements that are considered sexy and attractive for a female aren't necessarily sexy and attractive when performed by a male.

Some of the IG fitness pages of girls I see don't look like they even lift, it's just a springboard for them to display their bodies and get involved in the industry / get attention.
More likely the attention thing. Let's face it, thousands upon thousands of girls who aren't particularly fit (and have no interest in the fitness industry), but who happen to be naturally attractive, constantly post pics of themselves in a very transparent effort to farm as many compliments as possible.
