Nikkei Soars to Record High as Global Tech Rally Lifts Tokyo Stocks

Tokyo — The Nikkei Stock Average jumped to a record high as a global rally in technology shares lifted Tokyo’s equity markets. The Nikkei 225 closed up about 2.3% at 34,450, surpassing the previous peak seen this year, while the broader Topix rose roughly 1.6%.

Techs led the advance, with chip makers, software developers, and AI-related names among the top gainers. Investors cited solid earnings signals and expectations of ongoing demand for AI infrastructure and cloud services as catalysts for the rally, echoing strength seen in U.S. tech shares overnight.

The softer currency aided exporters, with the yen hovering near 156 per dollar and providing a modest lift to share prices of companies that generate a large portion of revenue overseas. Foreign buyers returned to the market as part of a broad risk-on mood, helping to push major indices further into record territory.

'The market is trading with a renewed risk-on tone as investors price in continued growth in AI and related technologies,' said Kaito Mori, equity strategist at Kaiyo Securities. 'If U.S. earnings stay firm and monetary conditions remain supportive, Tokyo could extend its gains into the coming sessions.'

While demand for technology and growth names remains the driver, traders cautioned that any hiccups in global rate expectations or tech results could trigger short-lived pullbacks. For now, the message from Tokyo is clear: a tech rally abroad is lifting the city’s benchmarks to fresh highs.
