[Your Story Medicine] Dr. Niki Elliott - Be Your Own Witness
Do you absorb other people’s pain? Have you been told “it’s all in your head, or that you’re “too sensitive”? D. Niki Elliott works with empaths, intuitives, and highly sensitive people to transmute their abilities into gifts -which became a loud calling after experiencing her own traumatic loss.
“One day i was working at the school, and there was some kids getting their medication with the nurse, and my intuitive voice said to me, ‘What if what’s going on with those children is the kind of energy sensitivity that you have, and that the mood learning or behavior problem other people think they have and that they’re being medicated for?”
“Every highly sensitive child I worked with had one or both highly sensitive parents.”
“People who choose helping professions tend to be people who had some kind of usually traumatic experience, life shock, or ACEs (adverse childhood experiences), that blew their heart to want to serve populations but also blew their energy fields wide open. We tend to come into the world with raw nervous systems and highly intuitive and empathic sensitivities that make us best at what we do, but also leave us energetically and vulnerable to absorbing and holding other people’s energies and suffering from empathic overload. We take it on as our own.”
“Most people have been prematurely blown open into these levels of high sensitivity and expanded consciousness through life shocks: near death experiences, accidents, traumatic childbirth, and adverse childhood experiences.”
“Those ways that we prematurely open our intuitive faculties and our heightened sensitivities of our nervous systems for keeping ourselves safe in unpredictable environments, it works well to keeps up safe in the home, but when we go out into the world with our energy center open and our nervous system too raw and open we get overwhelmed by the world. The tools that keep us safe in one environment are very counterproductive in other settings in the world.”
“We go there and set the energetic radiance of love, compassion, and harmony so when others come into the spaces we occupy their nervous systems to come into balance with us versus us moving into dysregulated system to match them.”
“You’re the one who sets the temperature, not the one who reads it.”
“If I can take everything that came from the pain of my journey and condense it into something that can change people’s lives, i will spend the rest of my life doing that.”
“The blessing of my journey started with holistic midwives.”
“Reiki and kundalini yoga saved my life.”
“The people I was helping was getting better, but i was getting sicker after practicing energy work with them. It took a long time to understand what the energies were, how to balance them, then how to negotiate so that i can support people in their wellness but still be well. I had to drop this idea that i was a healer to stop absorbing other people’s energies, and to say that I was a witness.”
“Once we help a person establish balance in their field, we get to teach them to how to turn up the volume on the intuitive abilities and use those intuitive faculties in their genius.”
“I stopped doing anything people would interpret as a psychic reading, and instead i taught people how to read their own energy and be a witness.”
“Most people who are highly sensitive don’t want it.”
“We all are somewhere on this trajectory of how sensitive our physical senses are to the invisible spiritual realm. We are all meant to be moving along this trajectory toward touching and expanding into the total capacity that we all have. But because a lot of us are under cultural teachings, religious spiritual teachings, or academic teachings that say that allowing our senses to function at these higher frequencies is wrong, bad, simple, or a sign of mental illness, we don’t develop it.”
“What we know about epigenetics is that when a parent has a certain set of experiences, their DNA shifts. Their nervous system shifts, and they pass on that change to their offspring, which then makes them born more highly sensitive to their parents.”
“Religion was just the place where we held things that we didn’t have a scientific explanation for, but now we are developing scientific explanations for what’s happening to us as empathic, intuitive, empathic, and highly sensitive people.”
“There is a genius insight and contribution waiting to emerge from each of us as we allow these subjective awakenings in our intuitive space to filter through our pain and trauma.”
