From time to time, I spend the holidays with my mum’s elder sister and I used to get on well with my cousins. But early last year, I woke to feel the hand, of my eldest cousin under my nightie.
I was so frightened though curious that I pretended to still be sleeping. After this, he tried to have full sex with me, but I pushed him off. Then he started being very nice to me, introducing me to his friends and giving me presents.
I was having such a good time that when next he came to the guest room, I let him have sex with me. He now thinks he could do that any time he wants but I’ve told him to stop.
Recently, he’s been forcing me to have sex with him whether I like it or not. I enjoy the sex but I’m only 16 and he is my first cousin. How do I make him stop?
What you’re doing is incestuous. First you are not at all legally allowed to have any sexual relationships because of genetic problems it could bring, if pregnancy occurs. Moreover, you’re too young to be playing with adult emotions. You are having unprotected sex which could either result in unwanted pregnancy or sexually transmitted diseases.
You have to be firm with your cousin and put an end to this nonsense. Threaten you’ll tell his parents or yours if he doesn’t stop. When next he crawls into your bed at night, say no and mean it. Leave the room if need be.

And these 18 diverse tales come in myriad fictional flavors, ranging in tone from celebratory to apocalyptic, and in subjects from family tragedy (like the drowning at a turn-of-the-century seaside resort in "Emily's Ring") to young love (the gay teen affair that blossoms unexpectedly in "Lilac"). But common to each story is a protagonist who must choose to step further into the world or to retreat from it. Ice cream is but one of the tastier symbols for this choice.
Where overtly repressed characters are concerned, the sensual world may suddenly beckon like a promised land. There's the "forty-five-year-old overweight mum," as the narrator describes herself, in "Swimming Into the Millennium," who reluctantly joins a chic London gym to pummel her body into shape, only to discover the gracious pleasures of the gorgeous indoor swimming pool and of two young men who train there.
And there's the title story, a delectable trifle about a supermodel named Clara. Celebrating her 24th birthday at a trendy restaurant with a group of equally gaunt colleagues, Clara is tantalized by a bowl of ice cream that arrives at the next table. Dunmore writes, "Clara never eats ice cream. Not even this celebrated vanilla, grained like raw silk, pure yet wicked. She does not even think of eating ice cream, any more than she thinks of committing murder or lying in the midday sun."
But the birthday girl dares to order the dessert anyway, only to have her trainer scurry to her side to offer tricks of the beauty trade -- meditation, regurgitation -- to move Clara beyond her craving. But what can vanquish "Belgian chocolate and ice cream perfumed with fragile wood-strawberries, crushed by hand into bowlfuls of thick, cool, yellow cream." Nothing, if one is lucky enough to enjoy them, the story seems to suggest.
Sensual pleasure is hardly the only springboard to epiphany in Dunmore's stories. True love or even true friendships are often shown to be just as profoundly subversive.
"My Polish Teacher's Tie," the collection's strong and funny opening story, charts an at first unlikely friendship. Carla, a part-time catering staffer at a university, boldly begins a pen-pal relationship with a Polish university professor, Stefan, who wishes to get an English view on poetry. The thing is, Carla never admits to Stefan that she is not an academic as well. She's mortified by her lie of omission when he then visits the college -- until she actually sees him, a gangly, open-hearted man with uninhibited fashion sense: "His tie was wider than normal ties, and it was red with bold green squiggles in it. It was a terribly hopeful tie." It's a tie that gives her the courage to approach him.
But the consequences -- both good and bad -- for such courage are rarely simple, even as Dunmore, in her more complex stories, renders them with sparkling concision.
Inspired, at least in part, by "The Handmaid's Tale," "Leonardo, Michelangelo, Superstork" strikes a serious note, introducing a genetically obsessed world of the near-future, where women can become pregnant only with the embryos of government-sanctioned, implanted clones. Two women, Susie and Pat, are neighbors, and both are pregnant: Pat by the upscale clone pregnancy service Michelangelo, while Susie claims that she used the even more costly Leonardo service, when in fact she and her husband have risked keeping their natural pregnancy a secret. The penalties for such a transgression are devastating and loom large when Pat's suspicious husband reports the couple to the police, and they try to escape. The primal beliefs of life and love never look more unruly and wondrous than in a such grossly regimented world.
Such risk-taking can cut both ways, as Dunmore explores in "You Stayed Awake With Me." The narrator, terribly ill with an unnamed auto-immune disease,
has holed herself up at her family's crumbling seaside cottage. Her free- spirited childhood friend, Janet, has happily taken vacation time away from her husband and children to care for her sick friend. But Janet's openness to life had rather a different effect the last time the women stayed at the cottage, when they were 15 years old, and Janet caught the eye of the narrator's father.
Taken together, the stories offer fascinating variations on the themes of engagement, experience and estrangement. Thanks to Dunmore's earthy way with imagery, the bright juice of the real world stains these stories indelibly.
And the tone, finally, is one of optimism. Or, as a computerized parking meter in one gently surreal story wisely dictates to a harried single mother: "Be Vigilant, Rejoice, Eat Plenty."
