On Wednesday, Nicki Minaj’s husband was sentenced to a year of home confinement for failing to register as a sex offender in California.
According to the Los Angeles Times, Kenneth Petty, 44, failed to register when he moved to California after marrying Minaj , 39, in 2019. Prosecutors sought a 15-month sentence for Petty, who agreed to plead guilty to the federal charge in September.
Federal prosecutors argued that Petty serving home confinement in his wife’s mansion in Calabasas is not an adequate punishment, the Times reported.
Petty was 16 in April 1995 when he was convicted of the first-degree attempted rape of Jennifer Hough, who was 16 at the time. Petty was accused of using a sharp object during the attack, for which he served four years in a New York prison.
Years after his release, Petty was convicted of involuntary manslaughter for shooting a man. He served seven years for that crime and was released in 2013.

Nicki Minaj ’s husband Kenneth Petty has been sentenced to home detention and probation for failing to register as a sex offender in Los Angeles.
In 1995, Petty was convicted for the attempted first-degree rape of a 16-year-old girl one year prior. He was sentenced to between 18 and 54 months in New York state prison, serving for just under four years.
In 2006, Petty pled guilty to first-degree manslaughter and was sentenced to 10 years in prison. He ultimately served seven, while his name remains on the New York City sex offenders register.
After his wedding to the “Super Bass” singer in 2019, Petty, 44, was arrested the following year for failing to register as a sex offender in Los Angeles, California, where the couple currently reside.
At a subsequent plea hearing, Petty pleaded guilty to the federal charge and faced sentencing.
On Wednesday (6 July), Petty was sentenced to one year of home detention and five years’ probation for breaking the federal law.
He was also hit with a $55,000 (£45,986) fine.
Prosecutors for the US District Attorney’s office had argued home detention wouldn’t amount to much punishment since Petty would serve out the sentence at the Calabasas mansion where he and Minaj reside , TMZ reported.
They pressed instead for a 15-month prison sentence along with a five years’ probation, the publication reported.
In 2018, Minaj defended Petty’s past actions on social media, writing: “He was 15, she was 16 … in a relationship. But go awf, internet, y’all can’t run my life. y’all can’t even run y’all own life.”

Kenneth Petty , Nicki Minaj ’s husband, has been sentenced to probation and home detention after failing to immediately register as a sex offender in the state of California. On Wednesday (July 6), Petty received his official sentencing in a federal court after pleading guilty last year. The 44-year-old received three years of probation and one year of home confinement. He has also been ordered to pay a whopping $55,000 in fines, according to reports .
Back in 2019, Petty was arrested during a traffic stop in Beverly Hills before police officers realized he hadn’t registered as a sex offender in his new home state of California after moving from New York in 2016.
Although Petty registered as a Level 2 sex offender in the state of New York prior to his move, his failure to do so in the following state goes against the mandates under the 2006 Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act, also known as SORNA.
According to SORNA, a sex offender is “required to update their registration in each jurisdiction they reside, are employed, or attend school.” Refusing to abide by those rules is considered a federal crime.
In 1995, Petty was convicted of attempted first-degree rape in connection with a 1994 assault that took place when he and the alleged victim were both between 15 and 16 years old. After being sentenced to 18 and 54 months, he served four years before his release in 1999.
The alleged victim Jennifer Hough spoke out in 2021 on the now-canceled TV show The Real. Accompanied by her lawyer Tyrone A. Blackburn, Hough said she was “tired of being afraid” and wanted to speak to the public.
“I feel like the actions that were taken in regards to this whole situation put me in a different type of fear at my age, and it was wrong,” Hough told the co-hosts. “The only way not to be afraid is to continue to speak up.”
After making such a public appearance, Hough accused Minaj and Petty of witness intimidation, emotional distress, harassment, assault, and battery. Her lawyer alleged that the couple pressured Hough to not talk about the rape charges against Petty once the case became public knowledge.
As the allegations of coercion died down a bit, Minaj happily announced her marriage to Petty in 2019 after one year of dating. The Pettys welcomed their first child, an adorable baby boy nicknamed “Papa,” in September 2020.

Rapper Nicki Minaj’s husband Kenneth Petty has been sentenced to probation and house arrest for failing to register as a sex offender,  CBS Los Angeles reported. Petty was even slammed with a fine of $55,000, according to the representative for the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California.
As per reports by Page Six , the 39-year-old Trinidadian rapper’s husband was arrested in March 2020 after he was ordered to register as a sex offender in California in November 2019 and failed to do so. Before his relationship with the rapper, Petty was convicted of attempting to rape a 16-year-old girl in 1994 and was required by law to register as a sex offender in New York.
Although Petty moved out of the state in October 2019 after marrying Minaj, he failed to do the same. Petty's attorneys Michael Goldstein and Hagop Kuyumjian issued a statement to USA TODAY on Wednesday, stating, “We appreciate and respect the Court’s decision granting the defence request for probation and home confinement.”
Kenneth had turned himself into federal custody in March 2020 after failing to register as a sex offender in California, the U.S. Marshals Service had confirmed to the international outlet then. He was then released on a USD 20,000 bond and charged with failing to register as a sex offender. Petty is a registered Level 2 sex offender on New York State’s Sex Offender Registry.
Earlier, for the first time ever, the alleged victim of Nicki Minaj's husband spoke out about the whole issue and made some shocking revelations during her interview with US media. The victim accused Kenneth Petty and Nicki Minaj of harassment, intimidation, and offering money to revoke her rape accusation in a lawsuit filed in October 2021.
The victim opened up about how it was not at all okay what Nicki Minaj and Kenneth Petty did to her. "He did something a long time ago and he had consequences that he was supposed to stick with. What they did to me and my family wasn't OK," she said. "It wasn't right and it doesn't matter how much money you have. It doesn't matter what your status is, you can't intimidate people to make things go better for you. And that's what they did,” she stated in her interview
