Pro football bettors have been staring at odds for the first week of the NFL season for months but many top US sportsbooks also have Week 2 lines posted. Wagering on games more than a week in advance always carries an element of risk, but that is especially true when it comes to NFL Week 2 odds. Preseason isn’t exactly the best barometer of how a team will look once the games count in the standings, and to make matters more confounding, Week 1 can have its share of deceiving results.
That said, there’s also a possible advantage to be had in jumping on early NFL Week 2 odds ahead of a large segment of the field. Point spreads are inevitably influenced by the betting public once they’re released, so capitalizing on the number the oddsmakers set before it starts to shift during and following the first weekend of action can certainly pay off.
To use a specific Week 2 example, say a bettor takes the Carolina Panthers as 3-point home underdogs against the New Orleans Saints . Then, New Orleans’ new-look offense falls completely flat in Week 1, with Jameis Winston struggling to keep the team moving downfield and the Saints’ poor receiver depth rearing its head against Green Bay.
Meanwhile the Panthers, with a healthy Christian McCaffrey and new quarterback Sam Darnold, roll the Jets in their season opening matchup. Oddsmakers shrink the spread down to one point in response or make the game an outright pick ’em, giving those who jumped on the 3-point figure an advantage.
With that approach in mind, let’s look at the Week 2 lines and examine five NFL games that could see a significant change in odds in the coming days.
Here are NFL Week 2 odds from the top US sportsbooks with point spread, moneyline and over under betting options.
The Cincinnati Bengals will get a good feel for how close to full health Joe Burrow is when they take on the Vikings at home in Week 1, but all reports are that the second-year QB is good to go for 2021. Burrow will have shaken off a good bit of rustiness during that first contest and in Week 2 will face a Chicago Bears squad that could struggle to consistently move the ball as long as Andy Dalton is under center. The Bears don’t have much proven depth at receiver. Conversely, Burrow’s impressive top trio of Tee Higgins, Tyler Boyd and Ja’Marr Chase could give the Bengals a good chance to keep this game close or pull the outright upset.
The New Orleans Saints will have a better idea of what Jameis Winston may be able to bring to the table in Sean Payton’s system in Week 1 against the Packers, a game that will be played in Jacksonville due to the impact of Hurricane Ida on New Orleans. How much disruption that causes the Saints remains to be seen, but the Carolina Panthers – sporting a new man under center themselves in Darnold – will have a fighting chance of grabbing a win on their home field with a presumably healthy McCaffrey back in the fold.
The Jacksonville Jaguars are expected to still be near the bottom of the AFC again despite the addition of Trevor Lawrence, with the season-ending injury suffered by Travis Etienne this summer certainly not helping matters. Jacksonville got a major offseason makeover from head coach on down, but Lawrence will be playing in only his second game and will do so against a Denver Broncos defense that should be much better with the return of Von Miller and additions of Kyle Fuller and Ronald Darby at the corners. Meanwhile, Denver’s offense could certainly surprise with a steady veteran hand in Teddy Bridgewater at the controls and a talented group of pass catchers, making this spread a manageable one – potentially.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will have extra time to prepare for this game after opening the season Thursday night in Week 1 against the Cowboys. That will make Tampa Bay even more dangerous than usual against a division rival that could be one of the NFC’s worst teams this season. The Atlanta Falcons did give the Bucs a reasonably difficult time in both matchups last season before succumbing, but all signs point toward Tom Brady and his deep, talented, incumbent group of pass catchers being exponentially better in their second year together under Bruce Arians’ aggressive system.
The Kansas City Chiefs are on a mission to get back to the mountaintop this season and will begin that quest at home against the Browns in Week 1. The Baltimore Ravens will naturally present a formidable challenge in this matchup, but Baltimore is hurting at running back due to the season-ending injuries to J.K. Dobbins and Justice Hill and is 0-3 against Patrick Mahomes since he took over the starting quarterback job in KC in 2018. Andy Reid and offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy have a proven ability to solve the Ravens’ vaunted defense as well, with KC piling up 27, 33 and 34 points in that aforementioned trio of victories.
Below we will look at how the spreads change for each game leading up to the NFL Week 2 contests.

The second week of NFL preseason action gets underway on Thursday. Already, fans of teams that were Week 1 winners – as well as fans of teams that ended up suffering first-week setbacks – are reading too much into the results.
There are some interesting opening point spreads entering Week 2. Eight of the 16 games show the visiting team as the favorite. So much for the return of capacity crowds creating a home-field advantage.
Odds as of August 16th at DraftKings .
That the New York Jets are favored anywhere is a story in itself. That the Jets are favored over the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field is how you know that this is the NFL preseason.
In fact, the Jets as the 1.5-point chalk over the Packers in Green Bay might not even be the biggest shocker of Week 2. The ever-inconsistent Las Vegas Raiders are giving seven points to the hometown Los Angeles Rams as the Raiders return to one of the many cities they’ve previously called home.
This betting line is because Rams coach Sean McVay refuses to play his starters in preseason.
Sure, it’s preseason but what Dwayne Haskins has shown in two appearances with the Pittsburgh Steelers is indicating a couple of things. Firstly, maybe he actually was worth that 2019 first-round pick that Washington spent on him. Secondly, perhaps he’s learned his lesson about personal responsibility since Washington was so willing to give up on him as quickly as they did.
During a 24-16 win at Philadelphia over the Eagles, Haskins completed 16 of 22 passes for 161 yards and a touchdown. So far, he’s clearly winning the battle with Mason Rudolph for the backup job behind Ben Roethlisberger. Based on Rudolph’s preseason performance, his two claims to fame remain the same – that Myles Garrett tried to crown him with his own helmet and he’s Eugenie Bouchard’s main squeeze.

Jared Goff was impressive in his Lions debut. He was 7-of-9 for 56 yards. He even engineered an 18-play drive, an NFL first for Goff. That it ended without a TD was Goff’s welcome to life as a Lion moment.
In regular season play, Detroit most recently won at Pittsburgh two years prior to the Lions’ last NFL championship season. Detroit’s most recent NFL title was earned in 1957, so yeah, it’s been awhile.
Pick: Pittsburgh Steelers -6 (-125)
How time flies. It’s closing in on five years since Nick Foles led the Eagles to their shocking Super Bowl triumph over Tom Brady and the New England Patriots.
Foles is on his second NFL team since the Eagles. Brady is a Super Bowl champion, albeit in Tampa Bay. In their stead, both the Eagles (Jalen Hurts) and Patriots (Mac Jones) are looking to young former Alabama QBs to lead them back to glory.

Hurts is struggling in his sophomore training camp and those problems continued against the Steelers. He posted a passer rating of 69.9, completing 3-of-7 for 54 yards.
Subbing in for starter Cam Newton, Jones finished 13-of-19 for 87 yards in his NFL debut and looked poised under center. He led the Patriots to a pair of field goals in two series.
Pick: New England Patriots -1.5 (-115)
Another absolute proof that it’s preseason – the unbeaten Jets are arriving in Green Bay. Zach Wilson, the Jets’ 2021 first-round pick, was solid in his first taste of NFL action. He fashioned drives of 10 and 11 plays during a 12-7 win over their Meadowlands rivals the New York Giants. He led them to a field goal during his two drives at the helm of the offense.
Wilson displayed poise in the pocket and made good decisions with the football. He was 6-for-9 for 63 yards and didn’t wow anyone. But he also didn’t make any boneheaded rookie mistakes. On the other hand, he achieved all of this against the second-string defense of a Giants team that went 6-10 last season.

Aaron Rodgers isn’t expected to see any preseason action, so it will be 2020 first-round pick Jordan Love who will likely get the start for Green Bay against the Jets. In his first-ever NFL drive last week against the Houston Texans, Love went 6-for-6 for 89 yards and a TD.
Love didn’t exactly conquer all – the Packers lost 26-7 – but he did post a passer rating of 110.4 for his half of work. However, his day was cut short when he was sacked by Jonathan Greenard late in the first half. Love fumbled and also injured his shoulder on the play, finishing his day. Packers head coach Matt LaFleur originally intended to give Love the first three quarters to show what he’s got.
An MRI of the shoulder proved negative. Love is expected to be good to go for this game.
Pick: Green Bay Packers +1.5 (-115)
