Betting On NFL Odds This Week
With each NFL team playing only one game per week of the regular season, there's plenty of time in between games to capitalize on a slew of NFL football lines and markets. An important aspect of this is capturing the best line possible. As NFL Vegas Odds tend to go to press late Sunday night/Monday morning each week, early NFL lines quickly follow with most major online sportsbooks content to take a page from NFL Vegas Lines .Moreover, there is no shortage of types of wagers to bet on.

Types of Wagers
There are many ways to bet on sports today, including football. It's what makes sports betting appealing, not to mention an ever-increasingly popular pastime.
Below we roundup the common betting types available across the board at most sports betting shops. These include money-line, point spread, totals, futures and prop bets. However, NFL bettors are spoiled for choice with a much wider-range of betting options available.

NFL Odds - Moneyline
Betting the money-line (also known as a straight up bet) is a simple bet on which team will win. There's nothing simpler than money-line (ML) betting..
Money-line markets feature NFL game odds where one team is favored (represented with the "minus" sign) and the other team is the underdog (represented by the "plus" sign). Bookies set the value (juice) of money-line odds for each team based on a number of variables. And a money-line wager is one that a bettor places on either the favorite or the underdog to win straight up.

Typically, the actual odds determine whether a money-line wager is worth it either way. The bigger the favorite, the lower the pay-out will be. While the bigger the underdog, the higher the pay-out. Obviously, the pay-out when betting on a favorite is normally less than it is when betting on an underdog because the probability a favorite would win is greater than the probability an underdog would win. By that same token however ML bets can be very profitable when betting on an underdog.

ML odds are based on the amount that a bettor would have to bet to win $100 when backing a favorite and, conversely, the amount they'd win if they bet $100 on the underdog. This doesn't mean bettors are obliged to bet those amounts however. Bets are made in any amount and the pay-outs are calculated accordingly. Use our odds calculator to find out how much your NFL ML bets can win.

For example, in the 2020-21 NFL season, the Kansas City Chiefs and New York Jets met at Arrowhead Stadium in week 8. Given the gulf in quality between these AFC rivals, the ML odds at the time were heavily skewed in favor of the hosts. The Chiefs were the faves at -2500 while the Jets were the massive underdogs at +1400.
To win $100 on the Chiefs, a bettor had to risk/lay a whopping $2500. Whereas a $100 risk on the Jets would have paid out a tempting $1400. Due to the high risk and low reward presented by betting on the Chiefs though, bettors were more likely to fade them in ML markets, look at alternate NFL betting lines instead or, even, bet against them by placing a small wager on the Jets to pull off the upset. All told, the Chiefs did go on to win the game 35-9, coming through as the bookies favorite convincingly.

It's worth noting that Moneyline NFL football odds will fluctuate in value on the odds board from the moment they hit the board until kick-off. This movement correlates directly to the volume of betting and the sportsbook practice of balancing the action.

NFL Odds - Point Spread
The NFL is synonymous with point spread betting. By and large, betting the point spread is the preferred type of wager amongst NFL betting fans nowadays as it levels the playing field between a favorite and underdog, focusing on the outcome of the game rather than which team wins. This becomes especially beneficial in a mismatch where a favorite is far superior to an underdog because the point spread equalizes the chance of winning. For instance, it's common for a bet on the underdog to win even if the team loses the game.

In a nutshell, a point spread creates a handicap between the favorite and underdog that makes betting on either side equally attractive. The point spread is the number of points set on a given game by bookmakers. The favorite surrenders points (represented by a "minus" sign) while the underdog receives points (represented by a "plus" sign). Typically, the number next to a point spread (known as the starting juice, vig or odds) is -110 in both cases. This means a bettor has to bet $110 to win $100 on a favorite and $100 to win $110 on an underdog.

Here is an example of an NFL point spread, taken from week 9 of the 2020-21 NFL season featuring the Carolina Panthers at Kansas City Chiefs.
Carolina Panthers +10 (-110)
Kansas City Chiefs -10 (-110)

In this example, bookies assess the mismatch between the Panthers and Chiefs by posting the game on double-digit point spread. A bet on the Chiefs would win if they beat the Panthers by more than ten points, while a bet on the Panthers would win if they lose by no more than ten points or if they win outright. Tale told, the Panthers did indeed cover the spread as they lost to the Chiefs narrowly at Arrowhead, 33-31.
As with most odds, line movement is likely to occur over the course of the week. Therefore, it's advisable to check what the NFL latest line is across the board before pulling the trigger or when shopping for the best line. Las Vegas NFL Lines will

NFL Odds - Totals & Over/Under
Betting the totals focuses on the score of the game rather than who will win the game. Its premise therefore differs from the aforementioned moneyline and point spread wagers.

The Over/Under is a bet on the total number of points scored in an NFL game. Sportsbooks will set a point total and bettors can bet whether the combined total score will exceed (go over) the projected number or fall below it (go under). Odds makers project a total number of points with the juice (vig or odds) that's assigned to the OVER and UNDER bets giving the bettor an idea which outcome is favored at the time.

Here is an example of an NFL total line, taken from week 14 of the 2020-21 NFL season, featuring the Baltimore Ravens and Cleveland Browns in Monday Night Football. The primetime showdown was set to a modest 45.5 total.
OVER 45.5 (-110)
UNDER 45.5 (-110)

All told, it proved to be one the highest scoring games in the 2020-21 NFL season as the pair delivered a veritable shootout that resulted in a 47-42 win for the Ravens. Thus, the OVER bet proved to be the winner by a big margin.

NFL Odds - Futures
For those that don't know what NFL futures are the clue is in the word "future." They're a bet placed on an event that will occur at some point in the future. The NFL playoffs are one example of a future event that bettors will be eager to bet on, in particular NFL Super Bowl odds. Predicting who will win Super Bowl even before the season starts is no mean feat, but odds makers nevertheless serve up a comprehensive serving for bettors to sink their teeth into.
Super Bowl LV champions Tampa Bay Buccaneers and runners=up Kansas City Chiefs are amongst the top two bets ahead of the 2021-22 NFL regular season.
