Week 1 of the 2021 NFL season was all about the underdog. Bettors that relied on favorites to carry them to victory were disappointed, as a record number of underdogs covered the spread.
Underdogs broke a Week 1 record when the Raiders covered (and won) against the Ravens on "Monday Night Football." That marked the 12th time in the NFL's 16 games that an underdog had covered the spread.
The previous Week 1 high was 11 wins, which happened on three occasions.
Underdogs weren't just covering though. They were winning as well. Nine underdogs emerged victoriously in Week 1, including five teams that won on the road. ESPN's Adam Schefter noted on Sunday that underdogs hadn't had that kind of success in more than 35 years.
It's important not to overreact to the success of underdogs going into Week 2. Savvy bettors will continue to analyze trends and avoid jumping on massive line shifts right away. It's best to take a full-scope look at the league and evaluate which teams simply had a bad week and which ones may not be quite as good as people thought coming into the season.
Also, it's important to note that many injuries took place in Week 1 and will impact teams moving forward. Notably, the 49ers lost top running back Raheem Mostert (knee) for at least eight weeks and their top corner Jason Verrett (torn ACL) for the season. The Saints have also lost a few players going into Week 2. That includes corner Marshon Lattimore, defensive end Marcus Davenport and center Erik McCoy.
Those injuries, along with the ones suffered by Ryan Fitzpatrick and Jerry Jeudy , will have a big-time impact on betting odds and line movement ahead of Week 2.

Below are the latest Week 2 NFL odds, including point spreads, money lines and over-under totals for every game, according to FanDuel Sportsbook .
The Chiefs and Ravens both hit speed bumps in their season openers, but only the Chiefs emerged with a win. Patrick Mahomes helped the Chiefs overcome a 12-point deficit during a second-half rally against the Browns. Meanwhile, the Ravens blew a 14-point lead against the Raiders. It marked the first time they had lost a game in which they had a 14-point lead since 2014.
Those performances aside, the Chiefs hold a significant advantage over the Ravens in recent meetings. John Harbaugh has struggled to beat Andy Reid during his career. He has just a 1-5 record against him in six meetings. That includes four consecutive losses to Reid's Chiefs, and in the three games featuring Patrick Mahomes and Lamar Jackson, the Chiefs have won by an average of 7.3 points per game.
Jackson has largely struggled in those contests. He has averaged just 170.3 passing yards in three games against Kansas City, all losses. He has done better with his legs — running for 196 yards — but he has only accounted for four total TDs while committing two turnovers and being sacked nine times. Only the Browns (12) have sacked Jackson more during his career.
The Ravens are also banged up in the secondary, and couldn't hold up late against the Raiders. If Jimmy Smith can't play, that could make Patrick Mahomes' job a bit easier. Even if he does play, Marcus Peters' absence will continue to loom large and Mahomes should be able to pick apart the Ravens' defense.
The trends say that betting on the Chiefs is a good value at -3.5, so we'll be trusting them even in a tough Baltimore road environment.
This pick is all about trusting the Seattle crowd to rattle Ryan Tannehill's Titans.
The Seahawks have one of the best home-field advantages in the NFL. The 12th man tends to show up in full force, and that's part of why Russell Wilson has posted a 55-17 record at home during his career.
Seattle has gone 44-32-2 against the spread at home since Wilson took over at quarterback in 2012. That's good for a cover percentage of 57.9, which is tied for the third-best in the NFL over the last nine seasons.
Needless to say, the "twelves" will want to welcome back their hometown team with a win. The Seahawks can be trusted to win by a touchdown after the Titans struggled to contain Kyler Murray and the Cardinals. Tennessee allowed Arizona to score 38 points. Wilson is the NFL quarterback that is most similar to Murray, so the Tennessee defense could continue to struggle in coverage.
A week after underdogs went 12-4, our best bets for the week are three favorites. Go figure, but hopefully, the principle of "regression to the mean" comes into play here.
Here's something you probably don't know about Teddy Bridgewater: during his career, the Broncos quarterback has posted a 36-13-1 record against the spread as a starter. He has been as steady as they come in terms of delivering covers, and he should have a chance to do that easily against the Jaguars.
Jacksonville is a dumpster fire right now, to put it kindly. Urban Meyer's time in Jacksonville is already off to a rocky start , and his team just lost to the Texans by 16 despite being favored by three points.
The Broncos just manhandled the Giants and allowed only seven points before a last-second TD scramble by Daniel Jones cut the lead to 14. The Broncos have a strong roster and should be able to keep Trevor Lawrence and Co. in check. They have a good chance to win this game by double digits, though playing in hot, humid Jacksonville could be a challenge for Denver.

These teams both finished last regular season at 11-5 ATS, while Buffalo went on to finish the year 12-7 including the playoffs. Both were great when it came to covering the spread and that should continue again this season.
I like the BILLS -3.5 (-107) to cover the spread – a spread that likely would’ve been closer to 7 points if the Bills were at home. The Bills will get back on track offensively and if this game turns into a shootout it greatly favors Buffalo.
Lines last updated Thursday at 3:45 p.m. ET.
The Rams easily covered the spread in Week 1, winning by 20 points after closing as 9.5-point favorites. The Colts failed to cover while losing by 12 as 3-point underdogs.
QB Matthew Stafford looked great in his first game with the Rams and that was only running 50 offensive plays, so the ceiling is high for Los Angeles in Week 2 and beyond. I like the RAMS -3.5 (-112) to cover the spread Sunday.
Lines last updated Saturday at 9 a.m. ET.
BET on the UNDER 42.5 (-105) as both quarterbacks are rookies, and after games that combined for under 40 points, betting on the Over doesn’t make much sense.
I’d rather bet that one of two rookies struggles – especially one without a run game.
Patriots RB Damien Harris played well, but I wouldn’t bank on him topping the century mark again. With limited weapons and better defenses, expect a low-scoring game in this one.
Lines last updated Saturday at 9:15 a.m. ET.
“LEAN” to PITTSBURGH -6.5 (-112) as Las Vegas will be down several key players.
On top of that, the Raiders played a Ravens team that had several key, season-ending injuries over the past week and in a rocking home stadium.
The Steelers took down one of the league’s best teams and limited an MVP candidate to just 1 touchdown. That’s impressive, and it’s their defense that’s leading the way, fronted by the recently extended T.J. Watt .
They should hold the Raiders to three or fewer scores.
Lines last updated Friday at 4:36 p.m. ET.
Since 2014, teams that lost by double digits in Week 1 have a 60.4% cover rate in Week 2 (29-19-1 ATS).
Another reason I like Jacksonville in this spot is that Florida-based football teams have a weather advantage in September that doesn’t get enough attention.
The weather forecast is predicting a hot, humid and possibly rainy day. Denver playing its second straight road game at an early East Coast start time in adverse weather conditions could be problematic for the Broncos.
Broncos QB Teddy Bridgewater was sensational in Week 1 and if he’s just a little less sharp then Denver should have a lot less success offensively. His No. 1 WR (Jerry Jeudy) is sidelined with an injury and Jacksonville’s defense had the highest pressure rate in Week 1.
Guess which defense had the lowest pressure rate in Week 1? The Broncos against the Giants’ sketchy pass protection.
GIMME 1 unit on the JAGUARS +6.5 (-115).
Lines last updated Friday at 7:15 a.m. ET.
The 49ers are 23-8 in the regular season when QB Jimmy Garoppolo starts.
Philly’s win was impressive, but it might have been more about how bad the Falcons are right now.
The stat to watch is how they do on third down. The 49ers limited the Lions to 4-for-15, and the Eagles held the Falcons to 3-for-14. Which defensive unit can keep that up?
Lines last updated Friday at 11 a.m. ET.
CHICAGO – 2.5 (- 115 ) is the STRONGEST PLAY – 1½ times your usual wager.
Bears QB Andy Dalton beat the Bengals 30-7 in Week 14 last season with the Dallas Cowboys. He threw 2 touchdowns in his return to Cincinnati where he was the starting QB for nine seasons.
However, QB Justin Fields is the secret weapon here. Look for the Bears to utilize the 2021 NFL Draft’s 11th overall pick a bit more than they did in Week 1. His running capabilities will be a problem for the Bengals.
Lines last updated Thursday at 7:30 a.m. ET.
The SAINTS (-190) aren’t terribly out of line if you want to play them straight up and avoid laying the points. New Orleans has won four straight in this series, and QB Jameis Winston looked solid in his first start taking over for the retired QB Drew Brees.
The Panthers (+155) won last week, yes, but a five-point victory over the New York Jets isn’t exactly cause for firing up the printer for playoff tickets just yet.
Lines last updated Friday at 7:19 a.m. ET.
The Browns rush attack is going to gouge the Texans for big yardage, but don’t discount QB Baker Mayfield and the pass attack doing big things, either.
Cleveland is considered a championship contender, and it will show out on offense against a team expected to be competing for the No. 1 overall pick.
Lines last updated Friday at 7:06 a.m. ET.
The BUNCCAEERS -12.5 (-110) are the pick to win by 13 or more points and start their Super Bowl defense 2-0. Tampa Bay beat Atlanta twice in the final three weeks of the 2020 regular season, first by a 31-27 count on the road but then 44-27 on home field in Week 17.
The Tampa Bay defense surprisingly struggled against Dallas, but it’s almost entirely the same unit that shut down the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl. It’ll make quick work of a Falcons O-line that surrendered 13 quarterback pressures to the Eagles last week.
Lines last updated Saturday at 9:35 a.m. ET.
Given the circumstance of injuries to Vikings players at key positions, it seems relatively easy to go CARDINALS -3.5 (-115) .
Minnesota is going to be without the player it drafted to start at left tackle (Christian Darrisaw) and three key defenders are on the injury report. The Cardinals should be able to open a big lead and make Minnesota desperate in the second half. If there is to be a blowout one way or the other, it almost certainly will be the Cardinals.
Lines last updated Friday at 9:50 a.m. ET.
Tennessee was 12-4-1 O/U last season and averaged over 30 points per game while allowing more than 27 PPG. Last week’s game fell 3 points shy of the projected line with Tennessee scoring just 13 points.
Anticipating Seattle and Tennessee being able to do more than they did in Week 1, this is where I have the most confidence. Take OVER 54.5 (-108) .
Lines last updated Friday at 9:02 a.m. ET.
The Chargers have also covered the spread in their last five games, dating back to last season.
The Cowboys have covered the spread in four of their last five. However, they are 1-4 ATS in their last five September games.

NFL picks against the spread, Week 2: Will the Cowboys cover against the Falcons?

We’re on to Week 2 in the NFL, with the Cleveland Browns and Cincinnati Bengals kicking off on Thursday. That means it’s time once again for our weekly look at the point spreads in order to help you win some money.
Last week , Steven Ruiz went 9-4-3 and Charles Curtis went 8-5-3.
We now go to each of them for comments before their picks.
Charles: Saved by the pushes! I’ll take it. A pretty good start in a very weird season.
Steven: When I saw those pushes, my first thought was, “Aw man, I could have won more games.” Charles, meanwhile, is just feeling lucky to avoid those losses. Telling.
I am not buying anything that the Browns are selling, even if it’s in a short week and it comes after losing to a very tough Ravens team. Joe Burrow looked pretty good in Week 1 and at the very least he’ll cover, if not win outright.
If this game were on Sunday, I would have picked the Bengals. But you have a short turnaround and the Bengals are banged up. Even if the Browns look like a total mess, they’re talented enough to beat an undermanned Cincinnati team with a rookie quarterback by a touchdown.
Aaron Donald against a decimated offensive line that gave up EIGHT sacks last week? Yes please and thank you.
Yes, losing to a football team without a name is bad, but I think the mistakes that led to the loss are correctable. And getting Lane Johnson back from injury should help that offensive line. I’ll take the home underdog.
I dunno. The Panthers didn’t look half bad last week even though that was against the Raiders. The Bucs didn’t look half good, but that was against the Saints. I think Tampa’s got this one but not by that margin.
Carolina’s defense is a disaster but I was not encouraged by what I saw out of Tampa’s offense on Sunday. Not just Tom Brady’s washed-ness. The play-calling wasn’t great and it appears that there hasn’t been a lot of adjustments made to better suit Brady’s declining skill-set. I’ll take those points.
Pittsburgh took care of the Giants mostly with ease, and with the Broncos coming East and struggling against the Titans, I’ll take Pittsburgh.
The Steelers will win this game but that’s just too many points to give up. I can see them using a defensive gameplan similar to the one we saw on Monday night. In other words, a lot of blitzing. Drew Lock may have trouble with that, but the Broncos defense is well coached and will do a better job of containing the Steelers’ quick passing game than the Giants did. Pittsburgh wins a low-scoring game but fails to cover.
There were some warning signs about Dallas last week, but if this becomes a shootout, I favor the team with the better defense at home with this small of a spread.
Nope. Not betting on the Falcons defense after what I saw on Sunday. Atlanta’s defense did not force Russell Wilson to make a single tight-window throw. Like that’s an actual statistic from NFL.com’s Next Gen Stats. I know the Cowboys offense didn’t look grea t against the Rams, but things should be a lot easier this weekend.
Normally, betting on home dawg is the right move here. But with no fans in the stands and the Niners wanting to bounce back from last week’s loss to the Cardinals, I think they put up the points here.
Is Adam Gase is still coaching the Jets? All right, that’s enough for me. But seriously, the Jets offensive line stands no chance aga
