In 1562, Francois Guise exterminated several dozen Huguenots during a divine service. In response, the Protestants began armed resistance. The hired killer dealt with Giza. Years of open clashes followed in various parts of France (in just 30 years - 10 wars). Both the British, who helped the Huguenots, and the Spaniards, allies of the Catholics, were drawn into them.
The most terrible episode of the Huguenot wars was the St. Bartholomew night. In August 1572, many Protestant nobles arrived in Paris, accompanying Henry of Bourbon to his wedding with the King's sister Marguerite. They sought to convince Charles IX to conclude a truce and take part in helping the Netherlands fighting against Spain, which they saw as a benefit for France. Immediately, a conspiracy of Catholics, led by Henry of Guise, the son of Francois, matured against them, convincing the queen mother to use the moment to crack down on the Huguenots. On the night before the feast of St. Bartholomew (August 24), dedicated Catholics marked the houses where their future victims were. It is characteristic that among the killers were mostly foreign mercenaries.
The prominent humanist Agrippa d'Aubigne in his "General History" says: "The streets were already full of armed people ... Since at that time the first alarm was heard and it was necessary to start the pursuit, the Duke de Guise and the Chevalier d'Angoulem, who all night they gave orders, they took the Duke d'Omal with them and approached the admiral's apartment ”(Admiral Coligny, head of the Protestants). Many were killed right in their beds. The massacre continued for three days with the participation of random people involved in the bloody orgy ... The murders spread to other cities. It is believed that at least 30 thousand people died.
